Mark 11:24
Therefore I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them.
Throughout the Bible, in both the Old Testament and the New Testament, we see hundreds and hundreds of references about prayer and praying. And when we read about the many miraculous things that took place in Biblical history, they are most often preceded by prayer. Somebody prayed and things happened! We can do an inventory of every book in the Bible and we will always find a common thread—PRAYER. We see the results of the prayers of believing men and women, common people, who put their faith and trust in God. And, so many of these common people became known for doing or being a part of extra-ordinary occurrences in their lives and in the lives of others, all because they believed God and prayed. They had the faith to believe God and they exercised that faith by praying.
The Lesson of the Withered Fig Tree is an amazing illustration of the power of believing prayer. The story is given in parallel passages of Scripture: Mark 11:20-24 and in Matthew 21: 19-22. Jesus first tells His disciples to, “Have faith in God.” He then speaks to the disciples about the power of having true and believing faith in their hearts and not doubting. This type of faith with prayer is what removes any and all obstacles, problems, or hindrances that might be in the way of answered prayer. Having faith in God accomplishes the impossible. Faith works miracles and is the basis for answered prayer.
Luke 18:1 tells us that men (and women) always ought to pray and not lose heart. Prayer encourages steadfastness and prayer discourages a loss of hope and enthusiasm. Prayer must be accompanied by faith. It is “believing prayer” which has power. When we pray, our prayers must be spoken with the authority and conviction of God’s will and purposes for our lives. When we pray, we must know and expect that God hears and answers our prayers. But, God expects that we will have faith in His Word. His desire is that we trust and believe EVERYTHING that He has promised us in the Bible.
Jesus tells us that in order to receive the things that we ask for in prayer, we must first BELIEVE that we receive them. But, our wills must be aligned with God’s will for our lives. When our wills are submitted to God, then the things that we ask for will be in line with God’s will for our lives. We are then praying God’s will and His Word. God MUST honor His Word, for HE CANNOT LIE!! We are, in essence, saying, ‘God, this is what you want for my life. So, this is exactly what I want, as well.’ When we BELIEVE what God says and we PRAY His Word, then we will receive every good and perfect gift that God has prepared for us.
Matthew 7:7 “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.”
Matthew 14: 13 “And whatever you ask in My name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.”
Matthew 14:14 “If you ask anything in My name, I will do it.”
John 15:7 “If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, you will ask what you desire, and it shall be done for you.
Philippians 4:6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God.
