Bible  Study Outline:     Outline on John Chapter 20

  1. Resurrection  Sunday             “An Empty Tomb”        Verses 1 thru 10

In Chapter 20, everything John talks about concerning Jesus’ resurrection he gives from his account and Mary Magdalene’s account.....

Mary Magdalene’s account covers, John 20:1-2, and John 20:11-18.
John’s gives us his eyewitness in, John 20:3-10, and John 20: 19-29, and Chapter 21

Note:  Collectively, in all 4 Gospel accounts, 3 women: Mary Magdalele, Salome and Mary the mother of Joses go to the place where Jesus was entombed. They took more spices to embalm Jesus body because they were not aware that Joseph of Armithaea and Nicodemus has already done so. The men had wrapped Jesus body in a linen shroud which contained 100 pounds of spices comprised of myrrh and aloes.

On the way to Jesus burial site, they wondered who would roll the stone away. If they could get somebody to move the great stone in front of His sealed tomb, once the stone was to be moved, they would complete the work then move Jesus ‘body to a permanent grave.

Make this note: According to many Biblical scholars Joseph’s tomb was only used to comply with the fast approaching Sabbath (Jesus died at the 9th hour 3:00 pm.) and they only had 3 hours to secure release of his body, embalm and enshroud it and have Him buried. It was early on Sunday when the ladies make their way to the tomb.

Notice:
  1. It’s still dark but Mary goes to the tomb early Sunday morning and sees the stone rolled away and an empty tomb. (vs. 1) ((A new day began at sunset and would carry to the next sunset)

  2. Seeing the stone removed from the front of the tomb, according to Luke 24:4-8, the women encounter 2 angels inside the empty tomb.

Luke 24:3-8
“They did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.  While they were wondering about this, suddenly two men in clothes that gleamed like lightning stood beside them. In their fright the women bowed down with their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, "Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee: 'The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, be crucified and on the third day be raised again.'"   Then they remembered his words.

Mary now runs to tell the rest that Jesus arose and would meet them all in Galilee. On the way, she runs back  and tell them what the angels said but on the way , the women meet a risen Jesus (Matthew 28:8-10)  They then told everybody but according to John, only he and peter came to see if it was true. (vs.2)

John outrun Peter to the tomb. Sees the linen cloth lying there but didn’t go in the tomb.

Question: Why did John go in the first time?
Because he was fully satisfied that the body was not there.

But why did he not seize upon the linen clothes, and keep them as a most precious relic?  (A staple of early Roman Catholicism)
Because he had too much “religion” and too much sense; and the time of superstition and nonsense was not yet arrived, in which bits of rotten wood, rags of rotten cloth, decayed bones (to whom originally belonging no one knows) and bramble bushes, should become objects of religious adoration.

Noteworthy:  This outlandish behavior and other practices that permeated the Roman Catholic Movement was the reason for the formation of the Protestant Church Movement led by Martin Luther in the 15th century.

Peter after seeing the linen went in the tomb John went in afterwards and the Bible said once he saw the linen and how everything was neatly arrayed,

Noteworthy:
God operating from His Providence made sure that the grave clothes were left in a way the gave positive proof that Jesus body was not stolen by the disciples. By leaving the grave cloths as they would if a person has simply slipped out of them  became the fullest proofs against the lie of the chief priests, that the body had been stolen away by the disciples. If the body had been stolen away, those who took it would not have stopped to strip the clothes from it, and to wrap them up, and lay them by in separate places.

John saw and immediately believed. (But they didn’t understand from the Scriptures that Jesus was to arise from the dead.) (Vs. 4-9)
The Scripture John refers to is Psalms 16:9-10:

“Thou wilt not leave my soul in hell…‎ For thou wilt not abandon my life to the grave, nor suffer thy Holy One to see corruption.

Mary Encounters Jesus (risen)                                (verses 11-18)

Peter and John now go home but Mary Magdalene remains at the grave crying. As she continues to cry, she stoops down and looks inside the tomb.  Inside, she sees 2 angels dressed in white sitting on the horizontal slab where Jesus body had been laid (one on each end)
Noteworthy: The place the 2 angels took up at each end was similar to the position the 2 Cherubims took up at both ends of the Mercy Set on top of the Ark of the Covenant with their wings spreaded, spanning over the Mercy Seat.

They asked her “Woman, why are you weeping? Mary answered, “Because they have taken away my Lord and I don’t know where they have laid Him”. (vs. 11-13)

She now turns around and sees Jesus standing there but could not recognize  Him. Jesus then asks her, “Woman why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking? Believing that Jesus was the gardener, she said: Sir, if you have carried Him away, tell me where you have laid Him and I will take Him away.

Jesus said to her: Mary! She responded “Rabboni”? (meaning teacher)

Jesus said to her, "Do not cling to Me, for I have not yet ascended to My Father; but go to My brethren and say to them, 'I am ascending to My Father and your Father, and to My God and your God.'"

Apparently, some of the women held him by the feet and worshipped him. This probably Mary did; and our Lord seems to have spoken to her to this effect:

"Don’t  spend  too much time with me now: I’m not going immediately to heaven yet and you will have several opportunities to see me again: but for now, go and tell my disciples, that I am, at some point going to ascend to my Father and God, who’s your Father and God also. Therefore, let them take courage."

Mary Magdalene came and told the disciples that she had seen the Lord,* and that He had spoken these things to her.
Concerning the Remaining Disciples:  “Their Commission”  (Verses 19-22)

“Then the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled for fear of the Jews, came Jesus and stood in the midst, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you”. (vs. 19)

The disciples didn’t know it, but it wasn’t the Jewish leaders desire to bother the disciples. It was apparently because of what Jesus said to them when they came to arrest him in the garden and the way His divine authority came through when He spoke it in John 18:8:  “ If it’s Me you seek….let these go away”.

But, as they had proceeded so far as to put Christ to death, coupled with the weakness of faith in the disciples, they were inclined to think they would next. Some scholars think they actually had the doors barricaded.

Nevertheless Jesus came in the sealed room. It is noteworthy to mention here John  omitted the appearing of our Lord to the other women who came from the tomb in (Matthew 28:9) and to the two disciples who were going to Emmaus in Luke 24:13, all of which happened in the course of this same day. Now standing in the midst of them…

Jesus said: Peace be unto you. (This was His usual salutation and benediction.) This meant: May every blessing of heaven and earth which you need be granted unto you! “And when he had so said, he shewed unto them his hands and his side. Then were the disciples glad, when they saw the Lord.”(s. 20)

Jesus body bore the marks of the nails and the spear; and these marks were preserved that the disciples might be the more fully convinced of the reality of his resurrection.

Then said Jesus to them again, Peace be unto you: as my Father hath sent me, I also send you. (vs. 21)

As I was sent to proclaim the truth of the Most High, and to convert sinners to God, I send you for the very same purpose, clothed with the very same authority, and influenced by the very same Spirit.

And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them Receive ye the Holy Ghost: Whosesoever sins ye remit, they are remitted unto them; and whosesoever sins ye retain, they are retained. (vs. 22-23)

Intimating, by this, that they were to be made new men, in order to be properly qualified for the work to which he had called them; for in this breathing he evidently alluded to the first creation of man, when God breathed into him the breath of lives, and he became a living soul: the breath or Spirit of God being the grand principle and cause of his spiritual and divine life.

Noteworthy: Every word of Christ which is received in the heart by faith comes accompanied by this divine breathing; and, without this, there is neither light nor life. Just as Adam was before God breathed the quickening spirit into him, so is every human soul until it receives this inspiration. Nothing is seen, known, discerned, or felt of God, but through this. To every private Christian this is essentially requisite; and no man ever did or ever can preach the Gospel of God,

The apostles received from the Lord the doctrine of reconciliation, and the doctrine of condemnation. They who believed on the Son of God, in consequence of their preaching, had their sins remitted; and they who would not believe were declared to lie under condemnation. That the power of life and death, and the power of delivering over to Satan, which was granted to the apostles, is here referred to. This was a power which the primitive apostles exclusively possessed.

Thomas:     “Seeing Jesus then Believing”                  (Verses 24-29)

But Thomas, one of the twelve, called Didymus, was not with them when Jesus came. (vs. 24)

The first time Jesus appeared to the disciples in the barricaded room, Thomas was not there and missed out on this precious opportunity of seeing and hearing Christ and receiving the blessing of the Holy Spirit. Jesus had told them before not to forsake being in company with the disciples. Had Thomas been there the first time he would not have had such difficulty believing his brethren and remembering that that Jesus told them that He would rise on the 3rd day. (Sunday)

The other disciples therefore said to him, "We have seen the Lord."So he said to them, "Unless I see in His hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and put my hand into His side, I will not believe." (vs. 25)

Here’s a description of Thomas belligerent behavior upon getting the news that Jesus was alive and had been with the others

1. Utterly unreasonable. Ten of his brethren witnessed that they had seen Christ, but he rejected their testimony.

2. His unbelief became obstinate: Thomas was determined not to believe any evidence that it might please God to give him: he would believe according to his own prejudices, or not at all.

3. His unbelief became presumptuous and insolent: As far as he was concerned seeing Christ will not be sufficient and he refuse to believe that the person he saw was Jesus unless he can put his finger into the holes made by the nails in his Lord's hand, and thrust his hand into the wound made by the spear in his side.

Noteworthy: There is a real danger in leaving the fellowship of fellow believers who are rock solid in the faith.  When the Spirit of the Lord shows up in the worship service and a disciple is found out of his place, who should  have been there but because of sin and satanic influence chose not to,  they are not only not blessed, but their heart becomes hardened and darkened through the deceitfulness of sin. It was through God's mere mercy if that person has another opportunity of being convinced of their error.

8 Days Later…..(the next Sunday)

And after eight days again his disciples were within, and Thomas with them: then came Jesus, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, Peace be unto you. (vs. 26)

From this you can see that since the resurrection of Jesus and His appearance to the remaining disciples, they started meeting every Sunday. Thomas was not present at the last meeting, but apparently, he was determined not to be absent from this. Jesus came again he has engaged to be among them.

Then saith he to Thomas,  “Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing”.

Thomas , though obstinate was sincere in his belief and did not quit his discipleship. And it is very likely that Thomas did put his hand in both the nail prints of Jesus hands and in the side where Jesus was pierced by a roman sword; because his unbelief was too deeply rooted to be easily convinced.

Thomas’ response:   “My Lord and my God.”

Jesus comes in…sees Thomas and addresses him; desiring him to come to him, and put his finger into the print of the nails… Thomas perfectly satisfied of the reality of our Lord's resurrection, says unto him,-My LORD! and My GOD! : "Observe that Thomas calls Jesus his God, and that Jesus does not reprove him for it, though probably it was the first time he was called so.

Jesus Response:   “Thomas,* because you have seen Me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed."

Because you have looked upon my body, and seen the proofs that I am the same Savior that was crucified. Jesus here approves the faith of Thomas, but more highly commends the faith of those who should believe without having seen. Happy, or worthy of the divine approbation. The word has here the force of the comparative degree, signifying that they would be in some respects more blessed than Thomas. They would evince higher faith. This applies to those believers in the future who would be convinced by the testimony of the Apostles, Ministers, pastors, etc..and by the influences of the Holy Spirit. They would have stronger faith because they took the message of the Gospel at face value.

Important to Remember: All faith is of things not seen; and God blesses those most who most implicitly rely on God’s word.

Conclusion:    “Signs”  That you Might Believe in Jesus     (Verses 30-31)

“And truly Jesus did many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book”. (vs. 30)

The Apostle John only zeroed in on the signs and miracles that were pertinent to compelling the belief that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, deity, and the fact that through Jesus you can have eternal life in His name. Matthew, Mark and Luke wrote about Jesus from different perspectives, yet all of them connected Him to being God. The Bible is a concise book and all the actual miracles of Jesus could not be contained in one book, however enough were recorded to convince the reader and the believer that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God and the Promised Messiah. (vs. 30)

“But these are written (the ones John did record) that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name”.

The Holy Spirit used the Apostle John to write about the Deity of Jesus Christ. The purpose and focus of this Gospel is to convey 2 objectives:
  1. To give conclusive proof that Jesus was the Messiah and the Only Begotten Son of God.

  2. And anyone who looked at the proof would be convinced and compelled to accept Jesus Christ as their Messiah and have eternal life through Him.
This is the design of the entire book. Every miracle, fact, argument, instruction, and personal conversations of our Lord is evidence of this. According to Barnes Notes: This point had not been kept in view so directly by either of the other evangelists, and it was reserved for the last of the apostles to collect those arguments, and make out a connected demonstration that Jesus was the Messiah. If this design of John is kept steadily in view, it will throw much light on the book, and the argument is unanswerable, framed after the strictest rules of reasoning, infinitely beyond the skill of man, and having throughout the clearest evidence of demonstration.

2 Thessalonians 1:1-2:1: "Walk Worthy of Your Calling"
Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy, To the church of the Thessalonians in God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ:
Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

God's Final Judgment and Glory
We are bound to thank God always for you, brethren, as it is fitting, because your faith grows exceedingly, and the love of every one of you all abounds toward each other,  so that we ourselves boast of you among the churches of God for your patience and faith in all your persecutions and tribulations that you endure,  which is manifest evidence of the righteous judgment of God, that you may be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which you also suffer; since it is a righteous thing with God to repay with tribulation those who trouble you, and to give you who are troubled rest with us when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels,  in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God, and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ.  These shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power,  when He comes, in that Day, to be glorified in His saints and to be admired among all those who believe,* because our testimony among you was believed.

Therefore we also pray always for you that our God would count you worthy of this calling, and fulfill all the good pleasure of His goodness and the work of faith with power, that the name of our Lord Jesus Christ may be glorified in you, and you in Him, according to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ
.

“Walking Worthy of Your Calling”

Introduction:

The 2 letters Paul wrote to the Church of Thessalonica were some of his earliest compilations that are archived in the New Testament part of the Bible…. It was that Paul who was called to be an Apostle by Jesus Christ and once converted from a fierce prosecutor of Christians into a fierce prognosticator of the Christian faith that God led to establish this Thessalonian church during his 2nd missionary journey…..And it was Paul that elicited to help of Silas and Timothy to further the work he started in Thessalonica…but could not physically complete in the city…. because Paul had a run in with the locals and the Judaizers that continued to be nemesis to his ministry causing him once again to be hastily run out of  another town....What happened as it was other times before was Paul dared to preach the gospel to the Gentiles in Thessolonica….and it didn’t sit well with those who were hell bend on living unmoral and immoral lifestyles….nor with the Jews who had serious issues with Gentile being preached the gospel and sharing any space in their synagogues once they were saved. So since Paul like could not physically come to the aid of the church and comfort them with his presence….he was compelled to write them because this church psychologically was in disillusion….. the people were psychologically shaken in their mind… and living under the false assumption… that they were suffering those persecutions promised to happen when Jesus Christ comes back to earth….not to save this time…but to judge…and God  in His anger pours out His wrath of punishment on the earth…So Paul writes to them to stem the tide of their worries and ease their troubled minds.

From the theological perspective, the pervading message Paul conveys to us by the Holy Spirit was to tell the members of this church about the imminent return of Jesus Christ…. And to let them know that even though they were suffering terrible persecution from the hands of the Judaizers and their own wicked countrymen… the true church ….that they were a part of…. would not suffer the vengeance the Lord is going to rain down on this evil and fallen society…..He assured them that God would rapture them out of harm’s way….  Before the execution of his judgment ever happened…..

You see for some strange reason… they had began to believe that they were experiencing the great and terrible Day of the Lord mentioned in Joel 2:31….

The prophet Joel said in verses 31 and that 32nd verse :

“The sun shall be turned into darkness, And the moon into blood, Before the coming of the great and awesome day of the Lord. And it shall come to pass that whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved. For in Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there shall be deliverance, As the Lord has said,  Among the remnant whom the Lord calls”….

Paul recognized he  had to quickly clear up that erroneous assumption …because this assumption created  the
3” real dilemmas they now had… that had to be quickly addressed by their exiled pastor. Because of this erroneous belief, and misapplication of prophecy……

(1) They became careless about their daily work because apparently they were under the impression that Jesus was coming back very shortly in their lifetime.

 (2) This created a concern among them concerning the final state of their Christian friends who had died in the faith and the effect this would have on their eternal future when Jesus did come back. . . and of course anytime persecution of a people becomes rampant….the people start pointing fingers at each  others

 (3) A schism rose up in the fellowship… Friction started to exist between church officers and those members who God anointed with spiritual gifts. And in addition with the schism that already existed between the church and the public sector that wanted no part of Jesus Christ… the members started bickering over who had the right to exercise their spiritual gifts in their church….

So he wrote to them in the first letter to tell them since Jesus is coming back… “I urge you to conduct yourselves in a worthwhile manner…I urge you to exhibit godly credibility because this church and its fellowship was being built based on sound doctrine”…. and second… with the aid of the ministries of Timothy and Silas….the 3 of them collaborated in this letter to continue to strengthen the people by encouraging them to keep on keeping on…by holding on to their strong faith and Christian life work in the midst of their trying times.

Paul makes strong emphasis in Chapter 4 in the first letter that Jesus was really coming back… and really could come back at any minute…and they need not worry about seeing their deceased loved ones in the afterlife…Paul not only assured them that they would see them again but, told he told them that when Jesus came back….the dead in Christ would rise first…then those of them that belong to HIM that were still alive when HE came would be changed….in a moment….in the twinkling of an eye and rise up and meet up with them and then together… all of them would meet the Lord in the air and from that moment on…. They all would go home together to be with the Lord forever and ever ….

So he writes in the second letter the additional assurance that when Jesus came back…He will punish the people and nations responsible for the persecution of HIS church and to remind them again not to lose hope and cave in under the pressure of judicial persecution….  Jesus was truly coming back…but they needed to know that before Jesus came back … they could expect several cataclysmic…even tragic events to take place before He did …

First… there would be a great falling away from the Christian faith… Many people  within the church will cave in under the wave of increased evil and would become disgruntled with the traditional Holy Spirit filled church… and living a holy way of life…like the people today are doing right now… Paul said many would fall away from the faith….many would leave the bible based,,,. Christ centered…Holy Spirit led church….. New kinds of churches and religious assemblies would spring up….Many New Age pastors and congregations would change the way church as they now say… the way we do church…to the point that they would change the way we worship….why we worship…and even what and who we worship….this New Age church experience would be led by evil and seductive spirits ….having a form of godliness…but denying the real power that comes from God….

Many "New Age" thinking people will start migrating into Christian congregations bringing into their worldly views. And after taking leadership positions in their perspective congregations start allowing pagan and abominable lifestyles and practices to be accepted in the modern church on earth and permeate and undergird the secular humanistic lifestyles now practiced in the community…causing a great slander to the true reputation of the church….because like the Laodicean attitude of the Laodicean church….the mega church mentality is we are rich…..increased with goods and have need of nothing…..

Paul said … And then, at some point… the “man of sin”… this Antichrist….this son of perdition…. who will dare to stand in opposition of everything that’s God’s way…. Filling the church with false doctrine after false doctrine…even stand in the way of every object people worship….that includes idol worship…. will take his seat in the temple of God…right in the church…and publicly display himself as God.

Paul said: the good thing is…right now there is a divine restraining order in place…. and when the time is right…everybody that still alive when that time comes…will know who he is….My brothers and sisters the good news is even now….the man of sin….that son of perdition is still under a divine restraining order….and there is a good reason for that…You want to know the reason?

I’m going to tell you that reason….the reason he is under restraint because Jesus said the gospel shall be preached to all nations for a witness then…shall the end come….God’s message of salvation must reach every nation…and there must be a witness in every nation….As bad as it’s getting and as bad as it is now…..Jesus said this is the beginning of the time of sorrows….young folks shacking up married folks packing up …..men marrying men…women marrying women…moral depravity everywhere…..children being kidnapped and sexually trafficked…. people moving out…people moving in….people being killed…why…because of the color of their skin…by the time Jesus comes back for His church…the world will have become a ball of confusion…….

So my brothers and sisters….what Paul wrote serves to them and to us as a “wake –up” … that in the meantime…in the midst of all the evil mayhem… the church still has evangelism work to do…. the gospel must be preached…the people in the church still have to live right…. We still have a charge to keep and a God to glorify… We still have a present day responsibility to serve the present age and stop standing around gazing into the future….The disciples in Jesus day did the same thing….Read in the Book of Acts in that 1st chapter…They had it so bad that the angels had to get their attention and raise the question…What you standing around gazing for….This same Jesus who you saw go up into the heavens…. is come back the same way He went up…We don’t have to wait to get Holy host power….If you are really in Christ….you already got it….Now it’s time to use it and lift Jesus up….

Now as we conclude with going to the text…this was a trying time for the church….Trials and persecutions were everywhere…Jesus haters Gentiles and law keeping Jews harassed them day and night…. And in this second chapter Paul reemphasized what he said to them in the 4th chapter of 1st Thessalonians…..Paul reemphasized the importance of the church and the true believers not losing their focus….in the midst of trouble and changing times…

Look at what he says in that 4th chapter: Paul said when it comes down to sexual matters, the child of God must always conduct themselves differently than the way the world does…In the first 8 verses…Paul pleads for purity: Listen to what he said in the first 2 verses: “You have grown…but you got to keep growing….You are matured…but you got to keep maturing… We taught you how to please God…We taught you what Jesus commanded….you must talk the talk but even more than that….walk the walk…God wills this for you…You’ve got to be sanctified… You need to know that sanctification is more than praising with your hands…running with your feet and shouting with your mouth….sanctification is your character and conduct…..it governs the way you live your life….Paul said:

God requires that you abstain from sexual immorality….unholy unions that defile the marriage bed…and your body…Paul said…by now…each of you should know how to “possess” that means take control over his own vessel ( your body) in sanctification and honor….You should know how… to maintain self control… of all your passions and intimate desires….and not get caught up in lustful passions  getting all hot and bothered riding an emotional rollercoaster desiring forbidden relationships out front that used to be on the down low and on the low-low……It doesn’t matter if the world makes it legal….It might be legal in the world…..but still unlawful in the eyes of Almighty God….and what God has put together and joined together let no man or legal system put it asunder….we can’t act like the Gentiles …not the ones in the world….on the  outside of the arc of safety… but even them that have crept in the church…..singing in the choir….preach8ng in the pulpits…..sitting in the pews….belonging to secret societies… that have no desire to really change…but want to push their evil agenda upon God’s church…..

Paul said:…Remember….they profess God…but they don’t  know God…..and while I’m at it…. that no one should take advantage of and defraud his brother….or their sister in this matter, this sexually perverted manner….because the Lord is the avenger of all such…. and you can’t say that we didn’t warn you ahead of time…. God did not call us to uncleanness….God called us to holiness. Therefore anybody and I do mean anybody that rejects what we are just told you…. does not reject man, but they are rejecting God, the same God that gave us the Holy Spirit…..

Paul admonishes the church to walk worthy of the calling God placed on them…Paul…Silas … and Timothy in  collaborated in this letter to tell the church that the rapture will happen before the 7-year tribulation period begins…..We know you are suffering….you are persecuted on every hand…You already believe that the day of the Lord is soon to come and Jesus is coming back of this church….you don’t want to be caught with your works undone….

You may have heard what Jesus said a long time ago: Let not your heart be troubled….if you believe in God….believe also in Me….For in My Father’s house are many mansions….and if it was not so….I will have told you….I go….to prepare a place for you…and if I go to prepare that place….I will come again…..and receive you…unto Myself….that where I Am….there you will be also…Jesus died so we could live Jesus died that we could have another chance…One Friday they hung Jesus on a cross…they nailed His hands…..nailed His feet pierced Him in His side placed a crown of thorns on his head…..He died…Yes He died….when He died….the sky got dark and the sun refused to shine…..When He died…the moon dripped away in blood….When He died….the graves opened up….and all the dead saints got up…. Had a victory celebration….marched in the streets of Jerusalem….gave God the praise…Yes he died….they buried Him in a borrowed tomb….but early….early…right early…Sunday morning….Jesus got up out the tomb….All power….All power….in His hands… yes you ought to rejoice when somebody is brought out of darkness in to the marvelous light…..place their feet on straight street and finally get eternal life…. Finally.....

I heard them say…..We are obligated to thank God for all He’s doing in your lives…the Lord is doing great things in your lives…So much so… that we brag about the work He has done in you to the other churches….Your enemies lie on you….but you hang in there…..they persecute you….but you hang in there….some of your family have been killed….but you still hang in there….the more you go through….the stronger you get…You are steadfast……unmovable…. always abounding in the work of the Lord…..you are growing…by leaps and bounds…You are living….to live again….We can see it …in how you love everybody….we can see it in how you treat your neighbor right…..we can see it in how you give to the church….in tithes and offerings….we can see it in how you keep schisms out of your church….we can see it in how you are keeping your life clean…..You are walking worthy of the calling God placed in your life….Finally….finally……Paul said….in the 11th and 12th verses: that ‘s why we pray for you that the Lord will count you worthy….and that He will get all the glory He can get out of your lives…that he will fulfill all the pleasure of his goodness in your lives and  work of faith with Holy Ghost power….that in the name of Jesus….you will have the victory…because Jesus will be glorified in your life….as you are glorified in Him…all according to His grace….Yeah….yeah…..ahhh yeah….

Biblical Expose: Exposing The Devil "His Character and Evil Behavior"

1 Peter 5:8-9: Your Adversary The Devil

Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:

Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world.

Exposing The Devil (Satan): His Character and Behavior

When it comes to the belief of an actual Devil, many people will deny his existence. While they will acknowledge the presence of evil, they see Satan (Devil) as merely being a ‘principle” of that evil. However, according to the Bible and Jesus himself, Satan is very much real. Jesus call him a liar and a twister of the truth.  The reason Satan lies is to bring doubt and disbelief against God and against His Word.

John 8:44 (b and c clause)

“He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.

Genesis 3:1 (a clause)

“Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the Lord  God had made”.

According to Jesus, “He (Satan) was a murderer from the beginning”. Jesus is making reference to him in the beginning of the world when he encountered Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. Recorded in the Bible, the very first account of man’s encounter with Satan is found in Genesis Chapter 3. He appeared in the Garden of Eden in deception in the form of a serpent. It was in this form that through the act of lying and seduction, Satan caused the fall of Adam and Eve and brought sin into the world. Because Adam and Eve fell prey to the seductive lies of the Devil (Satan)” Death” was pronounced  by God on them and on all of mankind as the penalty (punishment) for sin. When the devil deceived our first parents (Adam and Eve), they became subject to eternal death, that is, spiritually separated; banished from God in relationship  while still physically alive on earth, and both spiritually and physically in eternity once they passed from life on earth through physical death.
The Apostle Paul said in Romans 5:12:
“Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned”:

The Apostle John wrote these words in Revelation 12:9:

"And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent called the devil, and Satan, which deceives the whole world."

Every since Satan fell from grace when he was known as Lucifer, (Isaiah 14: 12-15) Satan has throughout the ages has always deceived men, and has been the primary cause of their spiritual and eternal death when men remained unrepentant. His work has been to steal, kill, and destroy, and in the worst sense of the word, he can be called a "murderer".  It was Satan who was the “mastermind” behind the first murder recorded in the Bible. It was by his instigation that Cain killed his brother Abel. (Genesis Chapter 4)
The following "Character traits" are some of the many traits of Satan. These are some of the simple facts about our adversary......

Jesus said Satan doesn’t abide in the truth. He knows the truth but refuses to live according to it and thus departed from the truth, living and professing falsehoods and compulsive lying.

There is No truth in him. That is, he embodies everything characteristic of a lie. Lying makes up his very nature and is the catalyst in his work to deceive. As when he deceived Adam, and his attempt to deceive the whole world, his ultimate aim is to drag man down to perdition.

He speaks of his own The things Satan talks about are those things that are appropriate and advantageous to him; those things that belong to his nature. His speaking of falsehood originates from his own propensities or disposition. Whatever he utters is the truest expressions of his genuine character.

He is a liar and the “father” of all lies. Jesus called him the “father”; the “originator of all falsehood”. From him falsehood originated and first proceeded forth. All liars possess his spirit and are under his influence. As the unbelieving Jews refused to hear the truth which Jesus spoke, Jesus called them children of the father of lies.

He is a deceiver.  Operating as a deceiver, Satan will always seek to bring confusion and lead many astray. Jesus called him a wolf in sheep's clothing. (Revelation 12:9; Matthew 7:15)

In Revelation 12:7-9, Satan and his army of fallen angels sought to overthrow the kingdom of God. Apostle John was compelled to write the following scriptures concerning the incident: “And war broke out in heaven: Michael and his angels fought with the dragon; and the dragon and his angels fought, but they did not prevail, nor was a place found for them* in heaven any longer. So the great dragon was cast out, that serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was cast to the earth, and his angels were cast out with him”.

In Matthew 7:15, Jesus warned is about the deceptive way Satan can use people to spread falsehoods and doctrinal heresies in the church. Jesus said:  “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves”.

By false prophets, Jesus is talking about teachers used by Satan to spread false doctrines. These false teachers come professing a commission from God, but their aim is not to bring the heavenly treasure to the people. Their real intentions are to rob them of their earthly good through the teaching of heresy, the traditions of men and fables.

These are teachers who are preacher for hire, having no motive to enter into the ministry but to get a living, and are guilty of “filthy lucre”. Many false teachers are initially hare to identify because they may bear the garb and appearance of the innocent useful sheep, looking like  true pastors commissioned by the Lord Jesus, or to whatever name, class, or party they may belong, are, in the sight of the heart-searching God, no other than ravenous wolves, whose design is to feed themselves with the fat, and clothe themselves with the fleece and thus ruin, instead of save, the flock. Here are a few more things y9u should know about the devil....

1.                    He is a thief. He comes to steal, kill, and destroy. He will rob us of joy, peace, security and purpose. He will try to destroy our families, lives, and all that we hold dear. (John 10:10)

2.                    He is the accuser. His voice condemns and accuses bringing shame and fear. (Revelation 12:10)

3.                    He is our adversary. He prowls around like a roaring lion seeking who he can devour. His attacks are ruthless. He searches for the weakest, most vulnerable victims to devour. (1 Peter 5:8)

4.                    He disguises himself as an angel of light, he is deceptively cunning and can make himself appear beautiful and alluring. He attempts to make sin look good and evil enticing. (2 Corinthians 11:14)

5.                     He is the tempter. He will do anything to try to lure you away from Truth, away from God. He knows your weaknesses, don’t be fooled. He lures, he tempts, with sex, money, power, greed, and lust. (Matthew 4:3)

6.                    He is Beelzebub. Known as the lord of the flies, the prince of demons. Like flies gravitate to decay and death, he lords over what brings death. (Matthew 12:23-24)
7.                    He is crafty. He is a schemer. He is cunning and evil. He can never be trusted. He is a master manipulator, don’t fall for his schemes. (Genesis 3:1-5, Ephesians 6:11-12)

8.           He is one who hinders. He is a stumbling block. He will do anything to prevent the Name of Jesus Christ from being proclaimed and Truth from being shared. He will try every trick possible to throw roadblocks in our path and to stop us from being fruitful (1 Thessalonians 2:18, Matthew 16:23)

Know the Different Times and Situations Satan is likely to launch an Demonic Attack

  • 1.   Satan never fights fair. He’s cruel. He will try to kick you while you’re down, and attack when you already struggling, and at your weakest, most vulnerable moments

  • 2.   Satan attacks when you don’t expect it. Often when life is great and things seem happy, we let our guard down. We forget he’s still there, waiting for one unexpected moment when he can come in with a brutal blow. Even when days are good, and we are strong, live aware that dark forces fight against us, in the spiritual realm where we cannot see. Never let your spiritual guard down. Be sober be vigilant because your adversary

  • 3. Satan will attack you when you think you can handle it. We must live aware, understanding our weakness and find strength in God alone, never in our own flesh. Do not be fooled to think you can’t be tempted. You cannot fight this warfare in your own strength. Your strength is natural. Satan, demons and all other dark forces are supernatural. It take the supernatural strength and intrinsic authority of Almighty God (Jehovah) (Yahweh)  to defeat the powers of darkness.
  • 4.   Whenever you’re making a difference for God’s purposes. If you are a force for God’s kingdom, and living like salt and light in this world, know that you will be attacked. You will. No doubt. Stay aware; do not be surprised, opposing forces will try to stop your influence for Christ. But they do not have to win. And we need not be afraid, for the Lord our God fights for us. He is on our side.

Protect Yourself From His Schemes:

  • 1.       Be aware and stay alert. (1 Peter 5:8)

  •

  • 2.       Submit to God’s authority. Be ruthless with sin, which is an open door for the enemy to work. Resist him and he has to flee. (James 4:7)

  •

  • 3.       Know that in Christ, we are forgiven. You are set free. You have His mighty power working within you. You are more than a conqueror through Christ. (Romans 8:37)

  •

  • 4.       Put on the armor. Daily. Pray. Take up the Word of God, the sword of the Spirit, which is our only offensive weapon. (Ephesians 6:11)

  •

  • 5.       Know that He is for you. He is with you. And the enemy does not have the final say over your life. God fights for you, even in times you’re unaware. He’s always working on your behalf, often behind the scenes where you cannot see. And the enemy’s plans will be crushed. (Romans 16:20)

  •

  • 6.       Keep living aware. Keep standing strong. You are never alone.

    7.   “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might” Put on the whole armor of God that you may be able to stand against the "wiles" of the devil. (Ephesians 6:10).

    Remember:

“Greater is He who is in you, than he who is in the world” (1 John 4:4).

“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13)

John 19:1-16: Jesus: "Mocked and Scourged"

So then Pilate took Jesus and scourged Him. And the soldiers twisted a crown of thorns and put it on His head, and they put on Him a purple robe. Then they said,* "Hail, King of the Jews!" And they struck Him with their hands. Pilate then went out again, and said to them, "Behold, I am bringing Him out to you, that you may know that I find no fault in Him."
Pilate's Decision

Then Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. And Pilate said to them, "Behold the Man!"  Therefore, when the chief priests and officers saw Him, they cried out, saying, "Crucify Him, crucify Him!"Pilate said to them, "You take Him and crucify Him, for I find no fault in Him."  The Jews answered him, "We have a law, and according to our* law He ought to die, because He made Himself the Son of God."

Therefore, when Pilate heard that saying, he was the more afraid, and went again into the Praetorium, and said to Jesus, "Where are You from?" But Jesus gave him no answer. Then Pilate said to Him, "Are You not speaking to me? Do You not know that I have power to crucify You, and power to release You?"  Jesus answered,
"You could have no power at all against Me unless it had been given you from above. Therefore the one who delivered Me to you has the greater sin."

From then on Pilate sought to release Him, but the Jews cried out, saying, "If you let this Man go, you are not Caesar's friend. Whoever makes himself a king speaks against Caesar."  When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he brought Jesus out and sat down in the judgment seat in a place that is called The Pavement, but in Hebrew, Gabbatha.  Now it was the Preparation Day of the Passover, and about the sixth hour. And he said to the Jews, "Behold your King!"
But they cried out, "Away with Him, away with Him! Crucify Him! Pilate said to them, "Shall I crucify your King?"The chief priests answered, "We have no king but Caesar!" Then he delivered Him to them to be crucified. Then they took Jesus and led Him away.*

Bible Study Outline:  Outline Study on John Chapter 19:1-16
The Crucifixion and Burial of Jesus Christ Part 1: “Sentenced and Scourged”
Introduction:

In Chapter 18, Jesus had been marched from the Praetorian judgment hall where after being examined by both Annas and Caiaphas respectively, they sent him to Pilate to execute the death sentence they had “pre- passed” upon him. Had Jesus been tried in a legal court of law and examined by legal standards, there was no way Jesus would have been found guilty, but as it was prophetically predicted that they would crucify him, they used whatever illegal means they deemed necessary During the time Jesus was being illegally tried in the Jews judgment hall, Peter while on the outside of the hall denies Him 3 times, just as the Master said he would and left the area among the judgment hall crying bitterly.

In John 18:28, they led Jesus to Pilate who was waiting for them later in that early morning on the day of preparation called the “Special Sabbath”. This Sabbath started on Tuesday at sunset and concluded Wednesday evening at sunset. Interesting enough with all the illegal maneuvering they did to get Jesus arrested, tried and convicted, they had no problem making sure that they didn’t violate any “external” Mosaic Law by entering in that Roman judgment hall. The claim was if they did, they would be ceremonially unclean to eat the upcoming Passover.  Pilate accommodated them by meeting them on the outside in front of the entrance and having examined Jesus found no fault in Him at all and sought to obtain His release, but the Sanhedrin wouldn’t have none of that. In fact, they entreated the waiting crowd to cry “Crucify Him” several times and they chose Barabbas over releasing Jesus.

I.   Jesus Scourged:           “Crowned With a Crown of Thorns”     (verses 1-3)

Whenever a person received a death sentence from the Roman court, it was customary to scourge or whip the condemned person before he was crucified. By scourging them, there would be infliction of excruciating pain causing greater suffering than crucifixion would alone. Our Lord, being about to be put to death after the manner of a slave, was also treated as a slave as one of the lowest and most despised of mankind. (vs. 1)

As Jesus was scourged by order of Pilate, he was scourged in the Roman manner, which was much more severe than that of the Jews. The Sanhedrin sent him to face Pilate, because they wanted Jesus executed in the Roman manner being the more severe and because the Jewish Law placed stoning as the severest from of capital punishment. The Jews never gave more than thirty-nine blows; for the law had absolutely forbidden a man to be abused, or his flesh cut in this chastisement, (Deuteronomy 25:3).

The common method of whipping or flogging in some places, especially that of a military style, is a disgrace to the nation where it is done, to the laws, and to humanity. Though it was customary to scourge the person who was to be crucified, it apparent Pilate had another purpose in view by scourging our Lord. He had hoped that this scourging would have satisfied the Jews, and that he might then have set Jesus free. (Luke 23:16)

This "crown of thorns" they placed upon Jesus head was intended to be an instrument of punishment or torture to his head, but rather to make him look ridiculous; for which cause they also put a reed in his hand, to symbolize a "royal" scepter and bowed to their knees pretending to pay homage to Him.

Adding Insult To Injury:       “Spat upon and hit in the head”
The next thing they did according to Matthew 27:30- 31 was to spit upon him This was a vile example of the deepest contempt and insult from the Roman guards. If you remember, Jesus experienced he same thing from the Jewish guard while he was in their custody when Jesus was going through interrogation in Matthew 26:67. And if that wasn’t enough, they took a large reed and hit him in his head, not merely to injure him by the force of the blow, but to press the "thorns" into his head, and thus to add cruelty to insult. And after that they had mocked him, they took the robe off from him, and put his own raiment on him, and led him away to crucify him.
  1. Jesus: Brought before the Mocking Crowd                      (Verses 4-7)

Pilate makes his third appearance from the Praetorium to the Jews outside. This time, he brought the scourged, bleeding, crowned, and kingly-clothed Jesus Christ before them, hoping by seeing him in this deplorable condition, they would be willing to let Him go after experiencing such suffering.  But, as it has been proven time and again, no religious persecutors will show any love and mercy on their victims. The Jews cried again for Jesus’ crucifixion until Pilate wanted to turn Him over to them. Pilate declares: “Behold, I bring him forth to you that you may know that I find no fault in Him”. (Jesus is now brought forth before the crowd wearing the crown of thorns and draped in a purple robe) Then Pilate declares: “Behold the man”!

The Implication of John 19:5
The Pilate conduct and purpose for putting Jesus on public display was to say to the mob crowd:  "See! This man whom you accuse is arrayed in a purple robe, as if a king. He has been scourged and mocked. All this he has borne with patience. Look! How calm and peaceful! Behold his countenance! How mild! His body scourged, his head pierced with thorns! Yet in all this he is meek and patient. This is the man that you accuse; and he is now brought forth, that you may see that he is not guilty."  (vs. 5)

Reaction of the Chief Priest and Officers: Crucify Him, Crucify Him! (vs. 6)
Pilate: “Well, take Him and crucify him! I find no fault in Him!”
(In other words) Pilate said:

"I am satisfied that he is innocent and I will not pronounce the sentence of death. Since YOU are bent on ruining him…Since YOU are determined to put to death this innocent man and my judgment does not satisfy YOU….YOU take him and put him to death and YOU will be responsible for it. YOU take the consequences. This cannot be done with my consent. Nor will it be done in the due form of Roman law; and if this is done, it will be by YOU, without authority, and in the face of justice."

(Note what Pilate does next according to Matthew 27:24-25)
When Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, but the restless crowd was creating an uproar instead, he took water and washed his hands in front of the crowd. "I am innocent of this man's blood," he said. "It is your responsibility!"  All the people answered, "Let his blood be on us and on our children!" (NIV)

Chief Priest and Officers respond: WE have a law and by our law HE ought to die, because HE made HIMSELF the Son of God! (vs. 7)

Concerning” that Law”

The “law” they are referring to id the law concerning blasphemy. Based on Leviticus 24:16 and Deuteronomy 13:1-5.

Leviticus 24:16:  “Anyone who blasphemes the name of the Lord  must be put to death. The entire assembly must stone him. Whether an alien or native-born, when he blasphemes the Name, he must be put to death”.

Deuteronomy 13:1-5: “If a prophet, or one who foretells by dreams, appears among you and announces to you a miraculous sign or wonder, and if the sign or wonder of which he has spoken takes place, and he says, "Let us follow other gods" (gods you have not known) "and let us worship them," you must not listen to the words of that prophet or dreamer. The Lord your God is testing you to find out whether you love him with all your heart and with all your soul.  It is the Lord your God you must follow, and him you must revere. Keep his commands and obey him; serve him and hold fast to him. That prophet or dreamer must be put to death, because he preached rebellion against the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt and redeemed you from the land of slavery; he has tried to turn you from the way the Lord your God commanded you to follow. You must purge the evil from among you”.

Observe how the Chief Priest and Officers are being manipulative before Pilate concerning Jesus:
They had arraigned Jesus on this charge of blasphemy before the Sanhedrin, and condemned him for it before Ciaphas in Matthew 26:63-65. But this is not the same charge on which they arraigned him before Pilate. They accuse him of sedition before Pilate in hopes that accusing Jesus of starting a movement to overthrow the Roman government would excite Pilate to put Jesus to death. They accused him of “subverting” the nation, being in opposition to paying taxes to Caesar and “claiming” to be Christ, a King. ( Luke 23:2)

But based upon Pilate’s declaration of innocence, they were now convinced that they could not get Pilate to condemn Jesus. He declared him innocent, but they, still bent on his ruin resolved to gain their purpose. Now in their next act, they moved from the sedition charge and brought forth the accusation of “blasphemy” on which they had already condemned him on and pronounced him guilty. They reasoned since they could not get Pilate to condemn him as a rebel, maybe he will condemn him as a blasphemer. So now they appealed to Pilate to sanction their condemnation of Jesus what they believed was required in their law. Thus, to Pilate, it became more clearer that Jesus was innocent, the Chief Priest and Officers had attempted to deceive HIM, and that the charges on which they accused Jesus of before him were a mere pretence to obtain his sanction to their wicked plot.
  1. Pilate Re-examines Jesus                                          (Verses 8-11)

Even more afraid now that Pilate heard the response of the chief priest and officers made the claim that Jesus “made himself” to be the Son of God, Pilate goes back in to the judgment hall with Jesus to ask further questions.
Pilate: now a man torn, having fear from 2 perspectives concerning making the right judgment:
  1. That offending the Sanhedrin and the populace on this matter would provoke them to file formal charges of treason and sedition against him to Caesar.

  2. Cause an immediate rebellion by killing an innocent man, a miracle-worker, a prince and an offspring of Deity, and being the very one whom he had been warned of by his wife and his own growing conviction not to have a part in His death. After all the Jewish people had an open disdain against the Roman government.

Pilate: “Where are you from”?
Note: Pilate asked the first question to find out if Jesus was the real offspring of deity or not, to see if Jesus who was so different in character and demeanor was a supernatural being.

Jesus: No answer. (vs. 9)

Because Jesus didn’t answer Pilate, he now flexes by reminding Jesus that he had the power to control whether Jesus lived or not.

Pilate: “You’re not talking to me? Don’t you know I have to power to crucify you, and have the power to release you”? (vs. 10)

Jesus: You don’t have any power to do anything at all with me unless it is given to you from God above. Therefore those who delivered me to you have the greater sin. (vs. 11)

In other words: You could not do one thing unless God willed. It is a sin for you to condemn Me, because you are convinced by your conscience of My innocence; but the Jews have the greater sin, because they willfully sin against Me.
Pilate Brings Jesus again before the Chief Priest                  (Verses 12-14)

After hearing what Jesus said to him, Pilate now before the waiting Chief Priest, Officers and restless crowd and takes his seat in the judgment seat in the place that was called “The pavement” which is translated in Hebrew: Gabbatha. The “pavement” was a stone platform in the open court in front of the Praetorium . It was the place where final sentencing took place. It is about the 6th hour (about 12:00 midnight) and the time of the preparation of the Passover. Still seeking to get the Chief Priest and officers to release Jesus Pilate tries to reason with the chief priest and the crowd.

Finally the Jews cried out :   “If YOU let this man go, YOU are not Caesar’s friend: Whoever makes himself a king, SPEAKS against CAESAR!”
In other words: We will accuse before Caesar of preferring another king over him if you let him go.
Notice, the implication here is not that they had love for Caesar, but they had that much hate for Jesus. They rejected Messiah that much. After hearing this, Pilate now brings Jesus out front before them the last time. Being back into a political corner, Pilate feels forced to execute Jesus.

Here’s his reasoning for his decision….He knew that Tiberius Caesar was one of the most jealous and distrustful rulers in the Roman Empire, and that during his reign accusations and conspiracies were plentiful and not uncommon. These rumors, accusations and conspiracies were mainly being founded on foolish pretenses, and being insanely jealous, Tiberius Caesar would punished the accused with excessive rigor, even execute them if he saw fit.

Pilate now makes the following bold statement to the Jewish crowd:

 “Behold Your King!"
Response:   “Their Final Rejection of Jesus”     (verses 15)
“Away with Him…Away with  Him…Crucify Him!”-

Pilate: “Shall I crucify your King?

Chief Priest: “We have no King but Caesar!”
Final Note : Concerning the Trial and Judgment of Jesus

With their final outcry against Jesus, the Chief Priest, the officers and the Jewish crowd that completely rejected Jesus in favor of choosing to release Barabbas, a murdering Zealot (Luke 23:25) and remaining under the guidance of the erring religious factions of the Pharisees, Sadducces, Herodians and Zealots now have plunged deeper and deeper into sin and rebellion by choosing an enemy instead of a friend, choosing Satan instead of God, and eternal damnation instead of eternal life.  As they said: "His death be upon us and our children!"

As for Pilate, Pilate now surrendered to the political pressure of possibly facing Tiberius in trial for not yielding to the Jews to crucify their King. He delivered Jesus to their will. Thus the Jews are accused of crucifying the Messiah (Acts 2:23). The Romans merely carried out the will of the Jews, Pilate having pronounced no sentence but having washed his hands of the whole affair signified by washing his hands in a wash basin before the Jews and publicly saying I wash my hands on this whole matter.  In the second part, we will discuss the actual events of the crucifixion itself.
