Acts 16:1-24      Timothy Joins Paul and Silas

Then he came to Derbe and Lystra. And behold, a certain disciple was there, named Timothy, the son of a certain Jewish woman who believed, but his father was Greek. He was well spoken of by the brethren who were at Lystra and Iconium. Paul wanted to have him go on with him. And he took him and circumcised him because of the Jews who were in that region, for they all knew that his father was Greek. And as they went through the cities, they delivered to them the decrees to keep, which were determined by the apostles and elders at Jerusalem. So the churches were strengthened in the faith, and increased in number daily.
The Macedonian Call

Now when they had gone through Phrygia and the region of Galatia, they were forbidden by the Holy Spirit to preach the word in Asia. After they had come to Mysia, they tried to go into Bithynia, but the Spirit did not permit them. So passing by Mysia, they came down to Troas. And a vision appeared to Paul in the night. A man of Macedonia stood and pleaded with him, saying, "Come over to Macedonia and help us." Now after he had seen the vision, immediately we sought to go to Macedonia, concluding that the Lord had called us to preach the gospel to them.
Lydia Baptized at Philippi

Therefore, sailing from Troas, we ran a straight course to Samothrace, and the next day came to Neapolis, and from there to Philippi, which is the foremost city of that part of Macedonia, a colony. And we were staying in that city for some days. And on the Sabbath day we went out of the city to the riverside, where prayer was customarily made; and we sat down and spoke to the women who met there. Now a certain woman named Lydia heard us. She was a seller of purple from the city of Thyatira, who worshiped God. The Lord opened her heart to heed the things spoken by Paul. And when she and her household were baptized, she begged us, saying, "If you have judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come to my house and stay." So she persuaded us.

Paul and Silas Imprisoned
Now it happened, as we went to prayer, that a certain slave girl possessed with a spirit of divination met us, who brought her masters much profit by fortune-telling. This girl followed Paul and us, and cried out, saying, "These men are the servants of the Most High God, who proclaim to us the way of salvation." And this she did for many days.

But Paul, greatly annoyed, turned and said to the spirit, "I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her." And he came out that very hour. But when her masters saw that their hope of profit was gone, they seized Paul and Silas and dragged them into the marketplace to the authorities.

And they brought them to the magistrates, and said, "These men, being Jews, exceedingly trouble our city; and they teach customs which are not lawful for us, being Romans, to receive or observe.
Then the multitude rose up together against them; and the magistrates tore off their clothes and commanded them to be beaten with rods. And when they had laid many stripes on them, they threw them into prison, commanding the jailer to keep them
securely. Having received such a charge, he put them into the inner prison and fastened their feet in the stocks.

Bible Study Outline: Exposition on the Book of Acts Chapter 16 :1-24 (Part One)    “Paul’s Second Missionary Journey”

Introduction
: Contention between Paul and Barnabas
A “contention arose before Paul and Barnabas could start the second missionary journey over whether John Mark, a relative of Barnabas could go along with them. Paul opposed this idea because Mark had abandoned them on the first missionary journey due to what Mark described as “homesickness”. Paul felt Mark could abandon them again and said no. Barnabas, wanting to give his relative another chance insisted and ultimately, they chose to part company, thus Mark went with Barnabas. Paul sent for help and the Jerusalem church recommended Silas. Upon Silas’ arrival, Paul now embarks on his second missionary journey.

Paul’s Return to Derbe and Lystra:                                           (verses 1-5)
“Timothy and Luke  joins Paul and Silas”
Paul and Silas goes to both Derbe and Lystra and found a young disciple named Timothy. Here are a few things we know about Timothy:

Timothy was a disciple, of Jesus Christ, and was baptized, probably in his youth, when his mother became a believer Him. Paul mentions in 2 Timothy how they trained Timothy and brought him up in the faith. In verse 3, Paul took to be his disciple, (to be trained and to learn the “ins” and “outs” of the gospel ministry that he might further train him up in the knowledge and faith of Christ. Paul took him under his tutelage to be brought up for Christ and the Christian ministry. Timothy became an associate minister under Paul’s ministry. Timothy was from Lystra in all likelihood based on what is said of him in verse 2.

His mother was a Jew and a believer in Christ named Eunice and his grandmother, also a believer was Lois. . Paul speaks highly of them both with great respect, as women of eminent virtue and piety, and commends them especially for their unfeigned faith in 2 Timothy 1:5, their sincerely embracing and adhering to the doctrine of Christ.

His father was Greek, an “unnamed” Gentile and uncircumcised. It’s not known if he was a convert or a proselyte at best. Because he being a Gentile and married to a Jewish woman, the father was not well thought of or esteemed.

Timothy was respected and well spoken of in Iconium  and Lystra by the Christians. He was seen as a young man of piety and promise.  His father was of another mind and way. For that reason, his mother and grandmother educated him in the fear of God. Not only did Timothy have an unblemished reputation, His life was free from scandal, and great accolades were said of him, such as being an extraordinary young man, full of potential and a person from whom great things were expected. These accolades were echoed everywhere he went. (vs. 2)

Important  Message:
The Judaizers of this time in history (Jews) still looked down on “mixed marriages” of Jews and Gentiles with utter disdain. In fact according to the Mosaic Law, in Deuteronomy 7:3, the Jews (Old Testament time) were forbidden by God himself to do this. They were forbidden to intermarry and intermingle.

Deuteronomy 7:1-5 The Law concerning the Jews and “Intermarriage”

“When the Lord your God brings you into the land which you go to possess, and has cast out many nations before you, the Hittites, Girgashites, Amorites and Canaanites, Perizzites and the Hivites and the Jebusites, seven nations greater and mightier than you, and when the Lord  your God delivers them over to you, you shall conquer them and utterly destroy them. You shall make no covenant with them nor show mercy to them.  Nor shall you make marriages with them. You shall not give your daughter to their son, nor take their daughter for your son. For they will turn your sons away from following Me, to serve other gods; so the anger of the Lord  will be aroused against you and destroy you suddenly.  But thus you shall deal with them: you shall destroy their altars, and break down their sacred pillars, and cut down their wooden images,* and burn their carved images with fire”

But Through Jesus Christ…….. and now, under a new dispensation and age (Grace and Church) the work of salvation and the love of God through Jesus Christ had already broken down barriers between the Jews and the Gentiles through a covenant faith of salvation in Jesus Christ under “Grace” and the “Christian” banner, but the heart of many Jews post Pentecost and post -Lycene Council in Acts 11 and the Church Council in Acts 15 in many parts of the region still stayed “glued” to the old dispensation mentality of keeping the Law and social separation from the Gentiles races.

Important Note: “A good name is better than riches. Your reputation is your name because your name will always be associated with your known actions and behaviors. Be careful concerning your name and walk in godly integrity

Paul wanted to train and use him in an active understudy fashion. That Paul would have him to accompany him, and join him in the work of the gospel. Timothy would preach for him when there was occasion, and to be left behind in places where he had planted churches. Paul had a great love for him, not only because he was an ingenious young man, a serious young man, and one of devout affections.

But Paul knew because of the family situation, the Jews in that region would not listen to Timothy uncircumcised, so to eliminate the drama that would attempt to block the potential ministry of Timothy in that region, Paul had
him circumcised.  (vs. 3)

POINT: Paul understood the power of politics.  (appeasing the Jews)
Paul opposed with all his might all those groups that were for imposing circumcision upon the Gentile converts. This situation happened not to long after the Church council decision concerning imposing keeping the Mosaic Law in its old fashion and submitting to circumcision. He had, and yet here he felt it necessary that Timothy be circumcised.

Paul’s Reasoning:

He did it so the ministry of Timothy would be accepted by those Jews who lived in that area. He knew Timothy would do great work and great good among the people if there were no prejudice against his family situation and consider him unclean if not circumcised and being the son of a Gentile whose father was not held in high esteem anyway because he too was not circumcised and legally didn’t have to submit to it, being Gentile.

It was an act of expediency for the sake of peace, and was in accordance with Paul's uniform and avowed principle of conduct. The circumcision of Timothy was a merely prudential regulation; one rendered imperiously necessary by the circumstances in which they were then placed; and, as it was done merely in reference to this, Timothy was laid under no necessity to observe the Mosaic ritual: nor could it prejudice his spiritual state, because he did not do it in order to seek justification by the law, for this he had before, through the faith of Christ.

Paul, Barnabas and Timothy now proceed from town to town to deliver to the Gentile Christians the decrees approved by the Jerusalem Church (Apostles, Prophets, etc..) this resulted in tremendous church growth throughout and strengthen faith.                              (vs. 4-5)

Note: It was of the utmost importance that Paul sought to eliminate as much controversy as possible for the gospel sake.
The disputations at Antioch, relative to circumcision, and keeping the Mosaic Law  had no doubt spread far and wide among other churches, and unhinged many who were not solid in the faith as of yet being young in the faith. The decrees of the apostles came in good time, and prevented further mischief and doctrinal disputes concerning this matter. Now, the people being saved from uncertainty, became established in the faith; and the church had a daily growth in the number of converted souls to the kingdom of God and added to the churches.

The “Call” To Macedonia                                                     (verses 6-10)

They traveled through Phrygria and Galatia . The Holy Spirit forbade them not to preach in Asia (Asia Minor)      (vs. 6)
They were forbidden at this time to preach the gospel in Asia (the country properly so called), because either it did not need, other apostles and disciples being at work there; or because the people weren't prepared yet to receive the gospel. Another reason was the Gospel was well received in this area and God now wanted to expand the Missionary work into Europe.

After they were come to Mysia, they assayed to go into Bithynia: but the Spirit suffered them not.  And they passing by Mysia came down to Troas.

They tried to establish churches in this area but again, the Holy Spirit would not allow them to do so.

And a vision appeared to Paul in the night; There stood a man of Macedonia, and prayed him, saying, Come over into Macedonia, and help us.  And after he had seen the vision, immediately we endeavored to go into Macedonia assuredly gathering that the Lord had called us for to preach the gospel unto them.   (vs. 9-10)

God is now through a “vision” redirecting Paul to go to Greece (Macedonia) and preach the Gospel. This was a call to preach the gospel in an extensive pagan land, amid many trials and dangers. Despite all this prospect of danger, Paul and Silas cheerfully responded, and gave themselves to the work.

Note:
Aside from speaking directly from is WORD and sending angels to deliver messages, sometimes God will use dreams and visions to do the same thing. The Great Commission of Matthew 28: 19:  is a direct mandate from Jesus Christ to “Go ye therefore in and teach all nations….” (into all the world)

From all portions of the earth a similar call is now coming to the churches. Openings of a similar character for the introduction of the gospel are presented in all lands. The world is hungry for the “living bread” We are to lift the Savior up for them to see. Appeals are coming from every quarter, and all that seems now necessary for the speedy conversion of the world is for the church to enter into these vast fields with the self-denial, the spirit, and the zeal which characterized the Apostle Paul.

Note: There are times when we will be redirected by the Holy Spirit not to go the way we planned, but to go another way. God will block a plan when His plan is in another direction and another purpose is to be served. Another thing to remember is your ministry calling is to reach a greater audience than you can imagine. We have at our disposal many communication devices and cyberspace technology to carry the gospel of Jesus Christ everywhere we can’t physically go. Whenever the Holy Spirit redirects you from your intended course, He assure you that the directive came from HIM.

Now after he had seen the vision, immediately we sought to go to Macedonia, concluding that the Lord had called us to preach the gospel to them. (vs. 10)

Now that they were fully convinced by the vision that they were free to go to Macedonia and preach the Gospel, they leave Troas and head toward Macedonia.

Lydia:             The First European Convert                     (verses 11-15)

The “Route: Leaving Troas   to an island then a harbor, then a Roman republic and they stayed in a Roman military settlement full of old soldiers and other informants to Caesar Augustus whose purpose was to greatly influence the people living there to adhere to Roman rule and remain loyal subjects.
Luke writes:
“sailing from Troas, we ran a straight course to Samothrace, and the next day came to Neapolis, and from there to Philippi, which is the foremost city of that part of Macedonia, a colony”.   (vs. 11-12)
The “we” in this verse means Luke actually accompanied Paul, Barnabas, and Timothy to Philippi.
They went to a place to pray (an open amphitheater, uncovered)
And on the Sabbath day we went out of the city to the riverside, where prayer was customarily made; and we sat down and spoke to the women who met there.  (vs. 14)

The Conversion of Lydia.
“The First Asian Convert”    (vs. 15)       (vs. 13-15)

Lydia possessed the following two qualities:

“open hearted” and a worshipper of God- (a proselyte)
Lydia overheard the conversation Paul was having with the other women. She openly accepted the Gospel and Jesus Christ.

hospitable”Lydia accepted Christ, and submitted to baptism. Then, as an act of gratitude and hospitality, she open her house to the Apostle and company  to have a place to live while they continued to minister in Philippi, as well as to receive more instruction in the faith from them while they were there.

A background note on Lydia:
She got her name from province of Lydia, Asia Minor, in which was located her city to Thyatira. Lydian women were famous for the manufacture of beautiful purple made from the murex, a shellfish. Even though Paul and Barnabas had been hindered. Lydia offered room and board at her house to accommodate Paul and Silas, Timothy and Luke.

Demon of Divination Cast out:       “Paul and Silas Jailed”          (verses 16- 24)
Paul and Silas have been in the city of Philippi some days now and Luke writes here:
And it came to pass, (at some point after the conversion of Lydia) as we went to prayer, (that is ‎Into the proseuche: the place of prayer) a certain damsel possessed with spirit of divination met us, which brought her masters much gain by soothsaying: But Paul, being grieved, turned and said to the spirit, I command thee in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her. And he came out the same hour.

The “significance of this passage:
Paul and Barnabas are deep into “hostile spiritual and religious territory” preaching the gospel” to the Philippians (Gentiles) who are believers and practitioners of Greek Mysticism and Mythology. As a result, when they encountered this young woman, they came face to face with the spirit of divination:

The “spirit of Divination” or having the spirit of “Python” or Apollo.
Pytho was, according to fable,(Mythology) a huge serpent,
(satanic) that supposedly had an oracle at Mount Parnassus, famous for predicting future events; It Is said that  Apollo killed this serpent, and because of this he was now called “Pythius”, and became celebrated as the foreteller of future event.
All those, who either allegedly could or simply pretended to have the ability to predict future events, were influenced by the spirit of Apollo Pythius.

Important Footnote:  As oftentimes the temple priestesses who were possessed by this demon became greatly agitated, and gave answers apparently from their bellies, when their mouths remained closed, In modern terms, this is where we get ventriloquism  and ventriloquists. A “divining” demon spoke through this possessed young woman.

This is one of many reasons God forbids us from having any personal dealings with soothsayers, astrologers, magicians, tarot card readers, Chaldeans. Root workers etc..    They are all used by demons and they do what they do for financial gain.
Deuteronomy 18:10-13

"Let no one be found among you who sacrifices his son or daughter ina the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft,  or casts spells, or who is a medium or spiritist or who consults the dead. Anyone who does these things is detestable to the Lord , and because of these detestable practices the Lord  your God will drive out those nations before you. You must be blameless before the Lord  your God"(NIV)

Leviticus 19:31
Regard not them that have familiar spirits, neither seek after wizards, to be defiled by them: I am the LORD your God.
b. As a result this is why she followed Paul and us, and cried, saying, These men are the servants of the most high God, which shew unto us the way of salvation. And this did she many days. She spoke the truth….rather tell you what the demon said through her was true….but there are 2 things the demon also knew:

This demon well knew that the Jewish law abhorred and prohibited the practice of all magic, incantations, magical rites, and dealings with familiar spirits. The Devil and every demon  know the Law and the WORD.

This demon spoke a true testimony to the Apostles evangelistic mission, however, his purpose for speaking that truth was designed to discredit their ministry and render the evangelism useless.

How you ask? Had Paul not acted against the divination coming from that unfortunate possessed young woman, the Greeks who believed and sought diviners on a regular basis  and the Judaizers who were against Paul and Barnabas anyway would have believed that the apostles were in compact with these demons, and that the miracles they performed were done by the agency of these wicked spirits, and that the whole was the effect of magic; and this, of course, would harden their hearts against the preaching of the Gospel.

Remember this would have been classified as blasphemy against the Holy Ghost. This was something the Sanhedrin and many unbelieving Jewish leaders were already guilty of because they brazenly once said that Jesus was casting out demons by the power of the prince of demons. There is no forgiveness for blasphemy against the Holy Ghost.

If the Gentiles who were very familiar with divination and already believed their own priest and priestests could not defrentiate the difference between the Gospel Paul and Silas preached and taught and that their own demon bore testimony to, they would see no need in leaving their heathen practices and simply believe that Paul and Silas and their “deities are part of the same “one religious system. This would cause them to believe they had nothing to learn, nothing to correct; and thus the preaching of the apostles must be useless to them.

The only way to save their accreditation In such a predicament as this was to cast out and dispossess this woman of her familiar spirit, and that in the most incontestable manner It’s paramount to why God demonstrated a similar situation before Pharaoh back in to save the credibility of Moses and Aaron, when the magicians of Egypt turned their rods into serpents, had not Aaron's rod devoured theirs? And what could have saved the credit of these apostles but the casting out of this spirit of divination, with which, otherwise, both Jews and Gentiles would have believed them in compact?

But Paul, being grieved, turned and said to the spirit, I command thee in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her. And he came out the same hour.
Paul speaks directly to the spirit of Divination: "I command you in the name of Jesus Christ: COME OUT OF HER"!    (vs. 18)

Remember: Jesus is Our Savior; Satan is Abaddon and Apollyon, the destroyer. Satan comes to steal, kill, and destroy, but Jesus came that we have life and we have life more abundantly. Our sovereign Savior says to the destroyer, Come out of her; and he (demon of divination) came out in the same hour.

Every circumstance of this case proves it to have been a real possession by a demon. It's very important to know that  demon possession is real and if you fail to turn your life over to Jesus Christ, unless God intervenes in your life's situation, demons can and will wreck your health even to the point of causing a person to become  murderous and suicidal.

And when her masters saw that the hope of their gains was gone, the demons that drove them to come up with this scheme in the first place now caused these men to become angry and seek revenge for being put out of the "divination business". The Bible said they caught Paul and Silas, and drew them into the marketplace unto the rulers, (vs. 19)

When her masters realized the Spirit of the Lord just put their money making scheme out of business and she was not able do any more divination work and their source of income was now gone……They brought Paul and Silas to the middle of town in the marketplace to cause a great riotous stir against them. The rulers, officers and the magistrate offices were located in this area.
IV.           Accused and Arrested:  “Paul and Silas Jailed and Beaten”  (verse 20-24)

Acts 15:1-41    " Conflict over Circumcision and Keeping Mosaic Law"

"And certain men came down from Judea and taught the brethren, "Unless you are circumcised according to the custom of Moses, you cannot be saved". Therefore, when Paul and Barnabas had no small dissension and dispute with them, they determined that Paul and Barnabas and certain others of them should go up to Jerusalem, to the apostles and elders, about this question. So, being sent on their way by the church, they passed through Phoenicia and Samaria, describing the conversion of the Gentiles; and they caused great joy to all the brethren. And when they had come to Jerusalem, they were received by the church and the apostles and the elders; and they reported all things that God had done with them.  But some of the sect of the Pharisees who believed rose up, saying, "It is necessary to circumcise them, and to command them to keep the law of Moses."

The Jerusalem Council
Now the apostles and elders came together to consider this matter. And when there had been much dispute, Peter rose up and said to them: "Men and brethren, you know that a good while ago God chose among us, that by my mouth the Gentiles should hear the word of the gospel and believe. So God, who knows the heart, acknowledged them by giving them the Holy Spirit, just as He did to us, and made no distinction between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith. Now therefore, why do you test God by putting a yoke on the neck of the disciples which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear? But we believe that through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ we shall be saved in the same manner as they."

Then all the multitude kept silent and listened to Barnabas and Paul declaring how many miracles and wonders God had worked through them among the Gentiles. And after they had become silent, James answered, saying, "Men and brethren, listen to me: Simon has declared how God at the first visited the Gentiles to take out of them a people for His name. And with this the words of the prophets agree, just as it is written: After! this I will return And will rebuild the tabernacle of David, which has fallen down; I will rebuild its ruins, And I will set it up;  So that the rest of mankind may seek the Lord, Even all the Gentiles who are called by My name, Says the Lord who does all these things.'

"Known to God from eternity are all His works. Therefore I judge that we should not trouble those from among the Gentiles who are turning to God, but that we write to them to abstain from things polluted by idols, from sexual immorality, from things strangled, and from blood. For Moses has had throughout many generations those who preach him in every city, being read in the synagogues every Sabbath."

The Jerusalem Decree

Then it pleased the apostles and elders, with the whole church, to send chosen men of their own company to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas, namely, Judas who was also named Barsabas, and Silas, leading men among the brethren.
They wrote this, letter by them: The apostles, the elders, and the brethren, To the brethren who are of the Gentiles in Antioch, Syria, and Cilicia:

Greetings.
Since we have heard that some who went out from us have troubled you with words, unsettling your souls, saying, "You must be circumcised and keep the law" — to whom we gave no such commandment — it seemed good to us, being assembled with one accord, to send chosen men to you with our beloved Barnabas and Paul, men who have risked their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. We have therefore sent Judas and Silas, who will also report the same things by word of mouth. For it seemed good to the Holy Spirit, and to us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things:  that you abstain from things offered to idols, from blood, from things strangled, and from sexual immorality. If you keep yourselves from these, you will do well.
Farewell.

Continuing Ministry in Syria
So when they were sent off, they came to Antioch; and when they had gathered the multitude together, they delivered the letter. When they had read it, they rejoiced over its encouragement.  Now Judas and Silas, themselves being prophets also, exhorted and strengthened the brethren with many words. And after they had stayed there for a time, they were sent back with greetings from the brethren to the apostles. However, it seemed good to Silas to remain there.  Paul and Barnabas also remained in Antioch, teaching and preaching the word of the Lord, with many others also.

Division over John Mark
Then after some days Paul said to Barnabas, "Let us now go back and visit our brethren in every city where we have preached the word of the Lord, and see how they are doing."  Now Barnabas was determined to take with them John called Mark. But Paul insisted that they should not take with them the one who had departed from them in Pamphylia, and had not gone with them to the work. Then the contention became so sharp that they parted from one another. And so Barnabas took Mark and sailed to Cyprus; but Paul chose Silas and departed, being commended by the brethren to the grace of God. And he went through Syria and Cilicia, strengthening the churches.

Bible Study Outline: Exposition on the Book of Acts Chapter 15:1-41
Meeting: The First “General” Council of Christians
Agenda: The Question of Salvation by Jesus vs. Law Keeping and Jesus

Introduction:

Up to this point, every dispute that challenged the church came from outside agitators who didn’t embrace Jesus Christ as Messiah. Those who opposed the new religion (Christianity) many times resorted to thugnacious acts of violence to press their displeasure over this new way of life. The churches now were finally at peace  because of the large success in the Apostles spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ and through many accepting the invitation of Salvation through Jesus Christ alone, the ministry work yielded many converts,  both Jew and gentile.  They enjoyed great external prosperity in Antioch, and of course, Satan, the great enemy of the souls of all men, women, boys, and girls took occasion then, as he has often done throughout history, especially during the time of the earthly ministry of Jesus and in similar circumstances since, to excite contentions  and cause a “schism”  in the church itself. So when external violence could not destroy the church of Jesus Christ, Satan through the unbelieving Jewish religious leaders would always make an effort to accomplish his objective (to steal, kill, and destroy the people of God) by internal dissension and strife.

Now Satan having been thwarted by the belief in Gospel and the faithfulness of the new converts who fully embraced it despite all external opposition, now changes his tactic and now launches an internal attack (schisms) against the Gospel of Jesus Christ itself and challenges Doctrine of Salvation through Jesus Christ alone. This chapter reveals to us a very important time in the history of the Christian church for 4 reasons:

1. This history, therefore, is particularly important, because it is the record of the first unhappy debate and dispute which arose in the bosom of the church.

2. It is further important, because it shows the manner in which doctrinal and social controversies were settled in apostolic time.

3. It established some very important principles respecting the perpetuity of the religious rites of the Jews.

4.
This was settled at the conference in this chapter.

Important note: Even though the Jerusalem Church steeled the matter, many Christians, living in that time period in history were and many Christians living in this modern historic period even now are drawn away from the simple Christian faith in Jesus Christ by the fallacy of keeping the LAW.

Historically, the entire church body at Galatia went back under the law and were condemned by Paul in Galatians 1:6; 3:1-5; and 5:4. Sadly, Peter, Barnabas, and others were carried away with this false doctrine for awhile in Galatians 2:11-21. Paul in anger and disgust called out both Peter and Barnabas..

Biblical and Doctrinal fact concerning the Law of Moses
According to 2 Corinthians 3:6-15, Paul said the Law of Moses has been abolished and done away.

Paul said in Galatians 4:21-31, the “ Mosaic Law” has been cast out and abolished.

In Ephesians 2:15, Paul said the “LAW” has been blotted out.

In Colossians 2:14-17, Paul declared the “LAW” had been taken out of the way;

The “LAW” has been “changed” in  Hebrews 7:12 , “disannulled” in Hebrews 7:18); “replaced” and has vanished in Hebrews 8:6-13;  and Hebrews 10:9.

Doctrinal Dispute:    The Question of “Keeping the Law”           (verses 1-3)

False Doctrine taught according to “Certain men" from Judaea (Jews)    (vs. 1)
They came behind Paul and Barnabas after they left Antioch and the surrounding regions undermining the ministry of Paul and Barnabas   saying to the new churches in the region: “Except you be circumcised after the manner of Moses, (Law) you cannot be saved.

Paul and Barnabas opposed them on teaching this false doctrine:  What makes his teaching a "false" teaching is Jesus Christ has fulfilled all the requirements of the Mosaic Law. Now being under grace and the ongoing stage of the "Church age" and now knowing that Jesus Christ is the only Messiah and the only way to be redeemed from sin, Paul and Barnabas were fully satisfied that it was never God’s intention to bring the converted Gentiles under the ”yoke” of “circumcision”. They knew that Jesus Christ was the end of the law for righteousness (justification) to everyone that believed which meant anybody who accepted Jesus Christ as Messiah was justified through HIM. Therefore they opposed this doctrine taught by the Judaizing teachers.

This was one of the first controversies in the Christian church; but, though the difference of sentiment was considerable, it led to no breach of Christian charity nor fellowship among themselves.

(So, the disciples at Antioch)
They determined that Paul and Barnabas, and certain other of them, should go up to Jerusalem unto the apostles and elders about this question.]    (vs.2)

Paul and Barnabas:  Delegates from Antioch of     (verses 3-4)
Their church paid their expenses to the council meeting, providing whatever they would possibly need for the journey.

On their way to the council, they , while passing through Phenice  and Samaria, they openly declared that Gentiles were  and could be saved by the Gospel.

Note: It was a miracle of God's mercy that the Gentiles should be received into the church of God; and they had now the fullest proof that they being saved  was likely to become general, by the conversion of Cornelius, the conversion of the people of Antioch, of Cyprus, Pisidia, Pamphylia, Lycaonia, etc., etc. Remember, Jesus came to the Jews first, yet along the way He poured out His love on the Gentiles.

Arriving at Jerusalem, they were received by the Jerusalem church, the Apostles and elders and gave their report of everything they accomplished on the first missionary journey.

Convening of the Council: Agenda:  Concerning “Circumcision” and “Keeping the Law of Moses”         (verses 5-6)

Christian Pharisee sect:
"We believe it is needful to circumcise the Gentiles and command them to keep the Law of Moses”.

Notice they did not question the reality of the Gentile's conversion, or the propriety of recognizing them as believers, but contended that their right to the blessings of the Abrahamic covenant and their standing in the church was incomplete without circumcision.  In other words, they believe the Gentiles could not be blessed under the Abrahamic Covenant unless they were circumcised.

The apostles and elders went in open discussion on this matter

Peter’s Address to the Council: ‘Why Tempt God”?                   (verses 7-11)

Peter gave a "factual" account of what God intended

a.
God used me to preach to the Gentiles a while back (Acts 10 Cornelius’ household) that they should hear the WORD of the Gospel and believe. God who knows the hearts of all men considered the Gentiles worthy to be saved by doing the following:

God in these  Gentiles gave them the Holy Spirit, in the same manner HE gave HIM to the converted Jews.
(vs. 8)

God was not discriminate. HE put no difference between them and us purifying their hearts (the Gentiles of Cornelius’ household) They became a new creation in Jesus Christ that very moment. (vs. 9)

Now, therefore, Why tempt God to put a (the same) yoke upon the necks of the disciples (Notice Peter didn’t call them Gentiles, he called them disciples, putting them in the same standing with Christ as the believing Jews were.) which neither our fathers (forefathers of many generations before us leading up to us) nor we (the present generation of Jews once under that same yoke could not even bear. (vs. 10)

But we believe that through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ we shall be saved (Ephesians 2:8-9) even as they. (vs. 11)

Paul and Barnabas’ Missionary Report:                               (vs. 12)
Then all the multitude kept silence, and gave audience to Barnabas and Paul, declaring what miracles and wonders God had wrought among the Gentiles by them.
Barnabas was mentioned first in this verse because he was known among the brethren and had been in acquaintance with them longer that Paul who was the younger in the faith. Their report coming immediately after Peter's account of the introduction of Cornelius and his party into the Church without circumcision, was plainly designed to show that God had acted on the same principle with them, throughout all their missionary ministry and work, as he had done with Peter; the signs and wonders performed among the Gentiles through them having set the same divine seal on their proceedings, as the descent of the Spirit upon Cornelius and his friends had done upon those of Peter.

James the Apostle’s Summation:          “The Prophet’s Position” (verses 13-18)“Men and brethren, listen to me”. (vs. 13)

We agree the “salvation” of the Gentiles is genuine and without the keeping of the LAW. Here are the facts:

Simeon declared first that God visited the Gentiles to take out of them a people for HIS name. (vs.14)

Notice here in this meeting James served as chairman and presided over it. It was interesting that he called Peter by his given name rather than the name Jesus gave him. In all likelihood, James either wasn’t aware or didn’t understand that Jesus had given Peter the position of “head leadership” in ushering in the church the people and possibly thought (naturally) thought being the brother of Jesus that the leadership role fell upon him.  However, James was rightfully was the chairman of the council meeting.

The prophets of old prophesied the salvation of the Gentiles

Scripture references are the following: Isaiah 11:10, 42:1, 6; 49:6, 22; 60:3. 66:19, Amos 9:10-11 and Malachi 1:11
New Testament Scripture references: Romans 9: 25-33

The promise to rebuild the fallen temple (the tabernacle of David) and set up worship practices. (Written and Prophesied by Amos in Amos 9: 11-12)  And fulfilled in Acts16-17 (19th Old Testament prophecy) (vs. 15-16)

Important Note:
James here is referring to after the end of the church age and after the rapture of the church, God will begin to rebuild the nation of Israel getting it ready for the eternal reign of the Messiah.

Scripture references:
Hosea 3:4-5; Isaiah 9:6-7; Daniel 7:13-14; Luke 1:32-33; Revelation 11:15; 20:1-10; 22:4-5.

The actual return of the Messiah and setting up the kingdom of David again will be when Christ returns.  Millennial reign of Jesus Christ for 1,000 years
(Revelation 19)
Scripture references:
Matthew 24:29-31; 25:31-46; 2 Thessalonians 1:7-10; Revelation 19:11-21; Zechariah 14.

It’s going to be done in this manner:
That the residue of men might seek after the Lord, and all the Gentiles, upon whom my name is called, says the Lord, who doeth all these things. (vs. 17)

 And….

Known unto God are all his works from the beginning of the world.  (vs. 18)
Very Important to Remember:
God sees everything future.
God knows what he will accomplish.
God has a plan and all his works are so arranged in his mind that he sees everything distinctly and clearly. As he foretold these, (prophecy) it was a part of his plan; and as it was a part of his plan long since foretold.
“Conventional wisdom says God’s plans should not be opposed and resisted by us.”

James Renders the “Council’s Final Decision”       (verses 19-21)

“We the council and we the church are not to trouble those Gentiles who have turned to God (who are converted) with the burden of keeping the Law and the burden of circumcision.” It is not theirs to keep and remember we did keep the whole Law
We will however write a letter to them to let them know what IS required of them: based on our judgment of the matter:    (vs. 20)

4  Laws for Gentile Christians

Abstain from pollutions of idols. abstain (Acts 15:20,29; 1 Thessalonians 4:3; 5:22; 1 Timothy4:3; 1 Peter 2:11).
It literally means to have nothing to do with the practice of idolatry; stand aloof from idols, and all immoral acts attendant on such festivals (Acts 15:20,29; 1 Corinthians 8:7-13; 10:18-22  0

Abstain from fornication (Acts 15:20,29).
It means to live a life of purity and chasity . Avoid living in uncleanness (homosexuality and other perversions) and prostitution which was so common at idol temples (Numbers 25:1-15).3.

Abstain from things strangled (Acts 15:20, 29;  and 21:25). When animals were strangled the blood remained in their bodies contrary to Leviticus 17:10-14, this being considered as making a greater delicacy.

Abstain from blood (Acts 15:20, 29; 21:25; Genesis 9:4). This not only includes eating blood, but shedding blood through acts of all cruelty and murder in its various forms.
Moses preached The Law and the Law was read every Sabbath in every city. (vs. 22)

Conclusion:     A “Unified” Christian Doctrine                            (verse 22)

Then pleased it the apostles and elders, with the whole church, to send chosen men of their own company to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas; namely, Judas surnamed Barsabas, and Silas, chief men among the brethren:

Post Meeting: “The Christian Council’s Decision” Concerning the Gentiles submitting to Circumcision and Keeping the Law of Moses   (verses 22-41)

Post Agenda:  Write and send a Doctrinal statement to the Gentile Christians: Concerning “Necessary Things”
Introduction: The Council’s Decision:
“We the council and we the church are not to trouble those Gentiles who have turned to God (who are converted) with the burden of keeping the Law and the burden of circumcision.” It is not theirs to keep and remember we did not keep the whole Law
We will however write a letter to them to let them know what IS required of them: based on our judgment of the matter:

The Council fashioned 4 Laws for the Gentile Christians to adhere to because it was the council’s position that these 4 requirements were “necessary”.

The Gentiles were to abstain from pollutions of idols. This meant they were to stay away from and stand against idolatrous practices, participating in immoral acts or attend and such festivals that celebrated idolatry in any way

Scripture References:. Acts 15:20, 29… 1 Thessalonians 4:3; ..5:22; ….
1 Corinthians 8:7-13 and chapter 10:18-22….1 Timothy 4:3 and
1 Peter 2:11).

The Gentiles were to abstain from fornication (Acts 15:20, 29).
It means to live a life of purity and chase . Avoid living in uncleanness (homosexuality and other perversions) and prostitution which was so common at idol temples (Numbers 25:1-15).

The Gentiles were to abstain from things strangled (Acts 15:20, 29;  and 21:25).When animals were strangled the blood remained in their bodies contrary to Leviticus 17:10-14, abstaining from this was being considered as making a greater dedication toward living according to the principles Jesus taught.

The Gentiles were to abstain from blood (Acts 15:20, 29; 21:25; Genesis 9:4).This not only includes eating blood, but shedding blood through acts of all cruelty and murder in its various forms. Moses preached The Law and the Law was read every Sabbath in every city. (vs. 21)
of Doctrine for Gentile Christians                             (verses 23- 31)
The Church council as a group formulated the following formal letter of Doctrine to the Gentile Christians:

To the brethren who are of the Gentiles in Antioch, Syria, and Cilicia:
Greetings.
Since we have heard that some who went out from us have troubled you with words, unsettling your souls, saying, "
You must be circumcised and keep the law"* to whom we gave no such commandment.
Those who came to you with these troubling words were not sent to you by us, nor do they represent the doctrinal position of the church.
It seemed good to us, being assembled with one accord, to send chosen men to you with our beloved Barnabas and Paul, men who have risked their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. We have therefore sent Judas and Silas, who will also report the same things by word of mouth.
It’s fitting for us being of one accord (believing the same thing and speaking the same thing) that we (the Council) send to you along with Paul and Barnabas  Judas and Silas  ( they represent our position) who will tell you by words from their own mouth the same things we write to you now.
For it seemed good to the Holy Spirit, and to us, to lay upon you no greater burden than these necessary things: that you abstain from things offered to idols, from blood, from things strangled, and from sexual immorality.* If you keep yourselves from these, you will do well.
Farewell.

Why were these things “necessary?
 (1) In order to preserve the peace of the church.
(2) To conciliate the minds of the Jewish converts
(3) In their circumstances particularly, because the crime which is specified-licentiousness was one to which all early converts were especially exposed.
II. The Effect of the letters and Exhortations                                    (vs. 30-34)
The Gentiles rejoiced in the fact that they would not be subject to keeping the Law and circumcision and the rituals of the Jewish religion. Judas and Silas also encourage them. Silas was also compelled to stay with them a while longer.
III.           Paul Begins His Second Missionary Journey                  (verses 35-39)
a.     Paul and Barnabas remained in Antioch preaching and teaching the WORD.
b.     Paul decided and suggested that they revisit every city they ministered in and established churches in.
c.      Barnabas became determined to take John Mark with them which didn’t set too well with Paul.
d.     Paul said it wasn’t a good idea to take Mark because he abandoned them during their first missionary journey. Paul lost trust in Mark.
This created a strong contention between them to the point they separated  (in peace).  Barnabas took Mark, his relative and they sailed to Cyprus. (vs. 39
From this point, you never hear anything else about Barnabas in history.

Footnote:
Paul’s second missionary journey starts in Acts 15:36 and covers up to Chapter 18:22
P‎aul was determined because of righteousness, thinking it best for the work of the Lord.  From Paul’s point of view, John Mark failed them and by abandoning them during the first missionary journey, Paul lost trust in Mark and in his eyes had done nothing to regain trust. (Acts 13:13).
Barnabas was determined because of love for a relative. His love led him to hope for the best. Barnabas would not give up and Paul would not change, so they agreed to disagree taking different parts of the work. This time Mark proved so faithful that even Paul later wrote for him (2 Timothy 4:11).

Conclusion:

In Christ two can differ and not manifest bad tempers. The way it worked out, two parties instead of one accomplished more work than would have been done otherwise.

Acts 14:1-21: Paul and Barnabas at "Iconium"

"Now it happened in Iconium that they went together to the synagogue of the Jews, and so spoke that a great multitude both of the Jews and of the Greeks believed. But the unbelieving Jews stirred up the Gentiles and poisoned their minds against the brethren. Therefore they stayed there a long time, speaking boldly in the Lord, who was bearing witness to the word of His grace, granting signs and wonders to be done by their hands. But the multitude of the city was divided: part sided with the Jews, and part with the apostles. And when a violent attempt was made by both the Gentiles and Jews, with their rulers, to abuse and stone them, they became aware of it and fled to Lystra and Derbe, cities of Lycaonia, and to the surrounding region. And they were preaching the gospel there.

Idolatry at Lystra

And in Lystra a certain man without strength in his feet was sitting, a cripple from his mother's womb, who had never walked. This man heard Paul speaking. Paul, observing him intently and seeing that he had faith to be healed, said with a loud voice, "Stand up straight on your feet!" And he leaped and walked.  Now when the people saw what Paul had done, they raised their voices, saying in the Lycaonian language, "The gods have come down to us in the likeness of men!"  And Barnabas they called Zeus, and Paul, Hermes, because he was the chief speaker. the priest of Zeus, whose temple was in front of their city, brought oxen and garlands to the gates, intending to sacrifice with the multitudes.

But when the apostles Barnabas and Paul heard this, they tore their clothes and ran in among the multitude, crying out  and saying, "Men, why are you doing these things? We also are men with the same nature as you, and preach to you that you should turn from these useless things to the living God, who made the heaven, the earth, the sea, and all things that are in them,  who in bygone generations allowed all nations to walk in their own ways. Nevertheless He did not leave Himself without witness, in that He did good, gave us rain from heaven and fruitful seasons, filling our hearts with food and gladness."  And with these sayings they could scarcely restrain the multitudes from sacrificing to them.

Stoning, Escape to Derbe

Then Jews from Antioch and Iconium came there; and having persuaded the multitudes, they stoned Paul and dragged him out of the city, supposing him to be dead. However, when the disciples gathered around him, he rose up and went into the city. And the next day he departed with Barnabas to Derbe.

Bible Study Outline: Exposition on the Book of Acts Chapter 14:
Introduction: Expelled from Antioch of Pisidia…Preaching the Gospel to the Gentiles

Introduction:

In Chapter 13, Paul and Barnabas visited a Jewish Synagogue in Antioch of Pisidia. When asked to share words of encouragement to the congregation, Paul took this time to share the history of their people and the Gospel (Good News) that Jesus Christ is the Messiah and the one that was rejected by the Jewish forefathers and the Jewish leaders of Paul’s day.  At first, after hearing that Jesus Christ was the only way they could be justified in the sight of God and not the Law of Moses, many of the Jews and religious proselytes believed the Gospel and asked Paul and Barnabas to return the next Sabbath. Paul and Barnabas in response persuaded or strongly encouraged them to continue in the grace of God. What a difference a week makes!

The very next Sabbath, when nearly the whole city came to hear the Word of God, the same Jews who heard the Word gladly last week now have a totally different attitude. The Scriptures said in Acts 13:44-52: they were filled with envy; and contradicting and blaspheming, they opposed the things spoken by Paul. Then Paul and Barnabas grew bold and said, "It was necessary that the word of God should be spoken to you first; but since you reject it, and judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting life, behold, we turn to the Gentiles. For so the Lord has commanded us: 'I have set you as a light to the Gentiles that you should be for salvation to the ends of the earth.”The people’s “end response” in Antioch of Pisidia was 2-fold:

The Gentile were glad and glorified the WORD of the Lord because all of them who believed that Jesus is the Messiah were now saved and had eternal life and instantly became disciples and witnesses and began to spread the WORD all throughout the region.

But the Jews, now indignant and becoming rude and violent incited the God-fearing women of high standing and the leading men of the city. They stirred up persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and expelled them from their region. Paul and Barnabas responded by shaking the dust off their feet and left Antioch and travel to their next destination
: Iconium.

Paul and Barnabas’ Ministry in Iconium                                       (verses 1-6)

The preaching of the gospel produced “converts” and “division”.
A great multitude of Jews and Greeks believed in the synagogue…but a great number of unbelieving Jews stirred up a group of Gentiles and poisoned their minds against the brethren.

This spurred Paul and Barnabas to stay in Iconium a long time and because they had been endowed with boldness, and they had great success in people both Jews and Greeks accepting Jesus Christ, they spoke about and in the Lord, trusting Him in the midst of persecution and opposition.

Note: Usually when God had given you victory in your work for HIM, opposition from among the ranks surely does come.

Successful revival of religion often produces excitement (riots) by the bad passions from those who oppose. Enemies of the truth will always form parties, cliques and then organize opposition. It’s not uncommon for such parties to be formed. (even from members inside the church) The reason for the opposition is never in Christianity. The fault always lie with those who form a party against the Christian religion, and who becomes haters and the opposition.

The city was now spiritually and literally divided: The Greeks and Jews. Some of the people from the city sided with the Jews and their religious dogmas.
(The keeping of the Mosaic Law down to the rituals and ceremonies) and the other part of the city sided with the Apostles.

The opposition of Gentiles and Jewish leaders became thugnatious and aggressive toward Paul and Barnabas. They began to press forward toward them and sought to stone them and accuse them as blasphemers. Paul and Barnabas got word of the impending opposition and left Iconium and led to Derbe, Lystra, and Lycaonia and the adjacent region in the area.
(vs. 6)

Ministry in Asia Minor: Healed A Crippled man Healed… A new church started               (verses 7-10)
Note: Leaving Iconium, Paul and Barnabas continued to preach the Gospel. The Jewish leaders could not bear to know that the Gentiles shared “equal status in Christ, in Chapter 13. In this chapter, the Jews sought to discredit them and their preaching. The plot was to accuse them of seditin and have them stoned. thus, they blasphemed the name of Jesus Christ and denounced Christianity as a whole.

Healing: a man with “impotent” feet and establishing a new church
 (verses 6-10)
The “tale” of the different crowds we minister to
At Iconium the citizen consisted of Greeks, a powerful Jewish colony, Roman officials, and a few natives of the country.
In  Lystra and Derbe, the citizenship were mainly rude idolaters who were natives. The reception you will get in your ministry depends upon the type of crowd you are  ministering to.
In Lystra a certain man sat in the crowd, with impotent feet born of this condition from birth and never had ever walked. The man heard Paul speak: Paul using the gift of discernment observed the man for a period of time and concluded the man had faith enough that he could be healed. Paul, getting the man’s attention said with a loud voice:
Stand upright on your feet. The man leaped (jumped up) and walked.

The people’s “idolatry practices” came forth in response to the healing of the crippled man.   (verses 11-18)

First the people responded verbally: "The gods have come down to us in the likeness of men"

Then, they gave Paul and Barnabas names of 2 of the pagan gods they worshipped . They called Barnabas Jupiter. They called Paul Mercury, because Paul was the primary speaker who share the Gospel and under the anointing and direction of the Holy Ghost directed the man to stand up and receive his healing.

Then the priest of Jupiter prepared to do a sacrifice in behalf of Paul and Barnabas because they believed they were actually 2 of the gods they worshipped and thought they had become flesh (human) before them.

Paul and Barnabas both in response to the oblations rented (tore their clothes literally) ran out among the people and Cried out the following things:

Why are you doing these things? We are men just like you.

The reason we are here in the first place is to preach the truth  of Jesus Christ to you in order that you will see the error of your ways and denounce these vanities, the worship of idol gods   and turn to the Living God: the one who made heaven, earth, the sea, and all things  that are were created.

Paul then gives these words of "reflective history":There was a time when God tolerated ignorance like this, but now HE demands that man repent.
 The following paragraph is a
summary concerning the History of Man in His Relationship to God: (Early History)

There was a time in the early history of man as God was multiplying man over the face of the earth when the Bible said God “winked” at behavior of mankind in the time of “ignorance”. This was a long period when people were ignorant of the true God, and when they worshipped stocks and stones.  God for His own reasons looked pass those times without punishing them, as if he did not see them. He, in His infinite wisdom allowed them to walk in ignorance in order that there might be a fair experiment to show what people would do if left to their own devices and decision making and to show and how much necessity there was for a revelation to instruct them in the true knowledge of God. We are not to suppose that God regarded idolatry as innocent, or the crimes and vices to which idolatry led to as of no importance; but their ignorance was a mitigating circumstance, and he allowed the nations to live without coming forth in direct judgment against them, even thou had He done so, His judgments would be just as right and just.

But Now in Modern Times:   Jesus Commanded By the Gospel of
(Luke 24:44-48)      “All Men Must Repent”

He said to them, "This is what I told you while I was still with you: Everything must be fulfilled that is written about me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets and the Psalms." Then he opened their minds so they could understand the Scriptures. He told them, "This is what is written: The Christ will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, and repentance and forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things”.

“All Men Must Repent”!

This included the Jewish race, who had been favored with special privileges, as well as all nations. The barrier was broken down, and the call to repentance was sent abroad into all the earth. All men are required to exercise sorrow for their sins, and to forsake them , that is completely turn away from that sinful life .

God commands all people to repent. Why?

That it is their duty to do it. There is no higher obligation than to obey the command of God.
It can be done. God would not command us to repent if it wasn’t possible to do so.
What God requires is binding on everybody. This includes the rich, the learned, the great, the frivilous, are as much bound as the beggar and the slave.

It’s imperative that repentance must be done, or the soul of the unrepentant is lost. It is not safe to neglect a plain Law of God. It will not be well to die reflecting that we have all our life despised his commands.

We should share the gospel to the pagans in every nation. God calls on the nations to repent, and to be saved. It is the duty of Christians to make known to them the command, and to invite them to the blessings of pardon and heaven. Paul continued:

Nevertheless He did not leave Himself without witness, in that He did good gave us rain from heaven and fruitful seasons, filling our hearts with food and gladness
."

Paul said even though God did not in those times give any revelations to them, He did show great evidence of goodness towards them in the following manner:

Rain from heaven.

Rain is one of the evidences of the goodness of God. Man could not cause it; and without it, regulated at proper intervals of time and in proper quantities, the earth would soon be one wide scene of desolation.  The falling of rain is regulated by laws which we cannot trace. Rain comes forth as God commands it to do so.

Fruitful seasons.
Seasons when the earth produces abundance. Fruitful seasons are a striking proof of the divine goodness, so much so that so few seasons are unfruitful. The earth yields her increase; the labors of the farmer are crowned with success; and the goodness of God demands the expressions of praise. God does not forget his ancient covenant, even though man tends to forget it.

God’s Ancient Covenant:
"As long as the earth endures, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night will never cease." (Genesis 8:22)

Filling our Hearts with Food.
Nourishment from the WORD of God, the "Living bread".

Filling Us with Gladness.

That is filling us with Joy and comfort. This means the comfort that comes from supplying all of our constantly returning needs. This is proof of “ever watchful” goodness. It is an immediate demonstration that there is a God, and that he is good.  Think about it! It would be easy for God to withdraw these blessings, and leave us destitute. If God chose to deviate single word, or do a single deviation from the fullness of His benevolence, it would alter all these comforts, and leave us to lamentation, woe, and death,

Conclusion:
“And with these sayings they could scarcely restrain the multitudes from sacrificing to them”. (vs.18)

Despite all that Paul and Barnabas said to turn the hearts of the people of Lystra from idolatry, they were more convinced that their gods had come too them in human form and were more zealous to honor them in their manner.

Persuaded by Outsiders:                  Paul Stoned                                      (vs. 19)
“And there came thither certain Jews from Antioch and Iconium, who persuaded the people, and, having stoned Paul, drew him out of the city, supposing he had been dead”
The Jews who rejected Paul and Barnabas in Iconium and Antioch pursued them from their cities and followed them into Lystra. They spoke harshly against the Apostles and accused them of being imposters and incited the people of Lystra to rage against them. They stoned Paul as a result of this. Afterwards, they drug Paul out of the city and left him thinking that he was dead. This is a great example of how fickle popularity is.
They now have stoned the very one that they were ready to worship as a god. Just before they were ready to adore him; now they sought to put him to death. Nothing is more fickle than popular favor. Remember:  on Palm Sunday, they revered Jesus as He rode into Jerusalem on a colt, throwing palm branches at His feet and cried “Hosanna”,  “Hosanna”. Five days later, most of the same crowd that cried Hosanna on that Sunday also cried out “crucify HIM”.
Note: Bad people will often travel further to do evil than good people will travel to do good. Wicked people often show more zeal in opposing the gospel than professed Christians do in advancing the gospel. We would benefit greatly if we had the same fervency in evangelism as the wicked have in opposing it. Another way of putting it is just as the wicked are hell bent      to do their evil, the righteous should be heaven bound to do the will of God.

Acts 13:26-52: Paul and Barnabas: "The "WORD" of Salvation is Sent to Us"
.
"Men and brethren, sons of the family of Abraham, and those among you who fear God, to you the word of this salvation has been sent. For those who dwell in Jerusalem, and their rulers, because they did not know Him, nor even the voices of the Prophets which are read every Sabbath, have fulfilled them in condemning Him.  And though they found no cause for death in Him, they asked Pilate that He should be put to death. Now when they had fulfilled all that was written concerning Him, they took Him down from the tree and laid Him in a tomb. But God raised Him from the dead. He was seen for many days by those who came up with Him from Galilee to Jerusalem, who are His witnesses to the people. And we declare to you glad tidings,  that promise which was made to the fathers. God has fulfilled this for us their children, in that He has raised up Jesus. (NKJV)

And that He raised Him from the dead, no more to return to corruption, He has spoken thus: 'I will give you the sure mercies of David.' Therefore He also says in another Psalm: 'You will not allow Your Holy One to see corruption.' "For David, after he had served his own generation by the will of God, fell asleep, was buried with his fathers, and saw corruption; but He whom God raised up saw no corruption. Therefore let it be known to you, brethren, that through this Man is preached to you the forgiveness of sins;  and by Him everyone who believes is justified from all things from which you could not be justified by the law of Moses. Beware therefore, lest what has been spoken in the prophets come upon you: 'Behold, you despisers, Marvel and perish! For I work a work in your days, A work which you will by no means believe, Though one were to declare it to you.'"

Blessing and Conflict at Antioch

So when the Jews went out of the synagogue, the Gentiles begged that these words might be preached to them the next
Sabbath.  Now when the congregation had broken up, many of the Jews and devout proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas, who, speaking to them, persuaded them to continue in the grace of God. On the next Sabbath almost the whole city came together to hear the word of God. But when the Jews saw the multitudes, they were filled with envy; and contradicting and blaspheming, they opposed the things spoken by Paul. Then Paul and Barnabas grew bold and said, "It was necessary that the word of God should be spoken to you first; but since you reject it, and judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting life, behold, we turn to the Gentiles.  For so the Lord has commanded us: "I have set you as a light to the Gentiles,
That you should be for salvation to the ends of the earth.'"

Now when the Gentiles heard this, they were glad and glorified the word of the Lord. And as many as had been appointed to eternal life believed. And the word of the Lord was being spread throughout all the region.  But the Jews stirred up the devout and prominent women and the chief men of the city, raised up persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and expelled them from their region.  But they shook off the dust from their feet against them, and came to Iconium. And the disciples were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit.    (NKJV)

Introduction:  Paul's Address: Message of Salvation: "Why Jesus is the Messiah"

In the first part of the Book of Acts 13, Paul and Barnabas was chosen by the Holy Ghost to go into Asia Minor and evangelize. It earmarked the beginning of Paul’s 3 missionary journeys throughout this region. Once opposed by a now blind sorcerer and false prophet name Elymas and leading the procounsul Sergei Palus to Christ in Cyprus, the two of them arrived in Antioch of Pisidia.

Once they got there, Paul and Barnabas went to worship in the Temple in Antioch on the Sabbath where after the reading of the Law, the worship leaders of the temple asked them if they had words of exaltation they wished to share with the congregation. Paul chose to speak and use this opportunity to share the Good News about Jesus Christ. In verse 16, Paul started out by sharing with the congregation a brief history of their ancestor’s relationship with God the Father and why Christ came and how their forefathers rejected Jesus as Messiah and tying the history to where the people who walked in darkness was.

Part Two continues the storyline in chapter 13 as Paul continues to take the congregation on a historic walk back in time to ultimately preach Jesus Christ to them as the promised Messiah that was crucified by their religious leaders and approved by them. Paul also shows them that on every Sabbath in the synagogue, when they are reading the scriptures (Old Testament) they read how the prophets of the Old Testament foretold that Jesus would be rejected and condemned by the leaders.
C
The Crucifixion of Jesus: The Prophetic Fulfillment Of  Isaiah Chapter 53 and Psalms 22
(Acts 13 verses 26-52)  (Part Two)

From verses 26 through 29, Paul first addresses the congregation as the "stock" of Abraham and includes any Gentiles or proselytes that were present. (as the Gentiles would have been on the outside of the sanctuary yet able to hear and see Paul from a distance) Paul revealed the following truths about Jesus and the Jews in general:

Paul addresses the native Jews who lay claim to be the seed of Abraham that the following Gospel message is especially to them, but also to every proselyte that fear Yahweh (Jehovah). Jesus, is the Messiah they were reading about on the Sabbath in the temple, yet didn’t realize it. (vs. 26)

Paul wanted them to know that the words of inspiration he shared with them is to let them know everything he shared with is to share the message of salvation that Jesus is the Messiah, the very one who was crucified but now lives. Paul also told them the Gospel was presented to the Jews first because Jesus was promised to them first . As an important note, Paul in the presentation of the Gospel reveals 30 Major Doctrines.

The following are the 30 Doctrines Paul preached to the Jews and Gentiles.

1. The Word of God, the gospel, and the faith are the same (Acts 13:5-8; 14:7).

2. Children of Satan and enemies of God are unsaved (Acts 13:10; 1 John 3:10).

Paul further stated:
Your ancestors were blinded by both pride and prejudice, and preconceived opinions. They didn’t understand the prophecies concerning the coming Messiah and acted in ignorance that day when they condemned Jesus Christ and sentenced him to die by crucifixion. (vs. 27)

Note:   A lot of times, People often read the Bible for a good part of their lives and never come to understand it.  In the case of the Israelites, their ancestors in Jerusalem didn’t realize that by condemning HIM and putting Jesus to death that the prophesy foretelling his death was accomplished by them.

Remember, they had no legal grounds to have him killed. The Sanhedrin accused Jesus of blasphemy , but couldn’t substantiate it, and knew Pilate would not carry out their wishes on that charge,  so they changed the charge in the Roman court to sedition against Rome and the Emperor, nevertheless, they desired that Pilate would pronounce a death sentence on him. Pilate granted their desire. (vs. 28)

When everything was fulfilled by them that was written in prophecy concerning Jesus’ death, they then took him off the cross and buried Jesus in a sepulcher. (vs. 29)

The Resurrection of Jesus: “Witnessed by Many” (Post Resurrection)
 (vs. 30-32)

God raised Jesus from the dead. (vs. 30)

This further proved that Jesus was innocent and had done nothing worthy of death.

From Galilee to Jerusalem, many people saw him alive. (vs. 31)

Not only was Jesus seen by many over a period of 40 days, Jesus during that time spoke to many concerning the Kingdom of God.

Paul further declared:

"We’ve declared unto you the ‘good news” that Jesus is the fulfillment of the promise God made to the forefathers and the way He lived and dies was foretold by the prophets of Old (Isaiah) (vs. 32)

The Resurrection of Jesus: Confirmed by the Fulfillment of Prophecy (verses 33-37)

"God has fulfilled this for us their children, in that He has raised up Jesus". As it is also written in the second Psalm:
'You are My Son, Today I have begotten You.  And that He raised Him from the dead, no more to return to corruption, He has spoken thus: 'I will give you the sure mercies of David.'* Therefore He also says in another Psalm: 'You will not allow Your Holy One to see corruption." In the 33rd verse, the 14th Old Testament prophecy is fulfilled in the following words God (Jehovah) said: “Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee”.

"Therefore He also says in another Psalm: 'You will not allow Your Holy One to see corruption.'
"For David, after he had served his own generation by the will of God, fell asleep, was buried with his fathers, and saw corruption; but He whom God raised up saw no corruption".     (vs. 35-37)

Important Note:
This verse ( vs. 33) could not and does not refer to David, because in verses 35 through 37: David, after he had served his own generation by the will of God, fell on sleep (died) and was laid unto his fathers, and saw corruption. That is his physical body remained in the grave and returned to dust. (from dust thou art and to dust thou shall return). David served in his own age, and saw God. But HE, (that is Jesus) whom God raised again, saw no corruption. This means Jesus was raised without undergoing the usual change that succeeds death, as opposed to David had returned to corruption, (the natural process of death concerning the soul, spirit and body of a person) and the Lord Jesus had not, it followed that this passage in Psalms 16 referred to the Messiah:

"Keep me safe, O God, for in you I take refuge. I said to the Lord, "You are my Lord; apart from you I have no good thing." As for the saints who are in the land, they are the glorious ones in whom is all my delight. sorrows of those will increase who run after other gods. I will not pour out their libations of blood or take up their names on my lips".

"Lord, you have assigned me my portion and my cup; you have made my lot secure.     The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; surely I have a delightful inheritance. I will praise the Lord, who counsels me; even at night my heart instructs me. I have set the Lord always before me. Because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken. Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will rest secure, because you will not abandon me to the grave, nor will you let your Holy One see decay. You have made known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand."  Psalms 16  (NIV)

Important Doctrinal Note:

This declaration from God in the 33rd verse refers to the incarnation of Jesus Christ when HE, the second person of the Divine Trinity fashioned himself in a human body (John 1:14) to redeem men from SIN. As far as the existence of God goes, from HIS origin, the person we now know of as Jesus Christ, who is also God had no beginning, (Jesus said it: Before Abraham was, I AM). was not begotten, was not a Son, and did not come into being. He has always existed as God!
Scripture references:
 (Psalms 90:2; Micah 5:2; John 1:1-2; Hebrews 1:8).

But as man (a human being born through child birth, conceived by the Holy Spirit) the “man” Christ Jesus” was not eternal. The “man” (the “Christ- child) had a beginning. He was born of the Holy Spirit and birthed through Mary. and as a man was subject to the same temptations and trial of men, yet Jesus was never guilty of sin..

Paul now concludes:          Acts 13:38-39

Therefore let it be known to you, brethren, that through this Man is preached to you the forgiveness of sins; and by Him everyone who believes is justified from all things from which you could not be justified by the law of Moses.

In concluding these words of inspiration, Paul lets the congregation know that Jesus is Messiah and shares with them the benefits they will receives from His death, burial and resurrection:

Repentance: That is, being sorry for your sins and forsaking the life of sin. This would apply to every nation because everybody in every nation has sinned and come short of the glory of Jehovah (Yahweh). Therefore the Gospel is to preach in all nations for a witness.

Remission of sins: This means God will pardon or forgive your sins. It should be proclaimed that all people should repent, and that those who are penitent may be pardoned.

In my (Jesus') name: By the command of Jesus Christ, in the proclamation of the Gospel, it should be proclaimed that people should repent, and by my (Jesus')  merit that they may be pardoned. Pardon is offered by the authority of Christ to every nations, This warrants the preaching and teaching of the Gospel to every race, color, creed,,  without discrimination.

Beginning at Jerusalem: This was the dwelling of his murderers, and it shows his readiness to forgive the vilest sinners. It was the holy place of the Temple, the habitation of God, the place of the solemnities of the ancient dispensation, and it was proper that pardon should be first proclaimed there. This was done-the gospel was first preached there. Paul in his travels, preached the gospel "first" to the Jews, the ancient people of God, offering them pardon through their own Messiah; and, when "they" rejected it, turned to the Gentiles.

Warning to All Unbelievers:                                                               Acts 13:40-41

"Beware therefore, lest what has been spoken in the prophets come upon you: 'Behold, you despisers, Marvel and perish! For I work a work in your days, A work which you will by no means believe, Though one were to declare it to you".

Paul issues a warning to those who refuse to believe the truth. Paul admonishes them not to be the ones of whom the prophets of old spoke of who would suffer great punishment and experience great calamities (Great tribulation) He wanted those who persisted in holding on to their present belief concerning the coming of the Messiah that Jesus Christ was the one they were looking for and the only Messiah there will ever be for this world. He said it would behoove them to accept the Gospel account and embrace the Messiahship of Jesus Christ. The "warning" is found in Habakkuk 1:5:

"Look at the nations and watch and be utterly amazed. For I am going to do something in your days that you would not believe, even if you were told".

Barnes Commentary Note on Habakkuk 1:5:

The original design of the threatening was to announce the destruction that would come upon the nation by the Chaldeans. The original threatening was fulfilled. But it was as applicable to the Jews in the time of Paul as in the time of Habakkuk. The principle of the passage is, that if they held in contempt the doings of God, they would perish.

The work which God was to do by means of the Chaldeans was so fearful, so unusual, and so remarkable, that they would not believe it in time to avoid the calamity. In the same way, the manner in which God gave the Messiah was so little in accordance with their expectation, that they might see it, yet disbelieve it; that they might have the fullest proof, and yet despise it; that they might wonder, and be amazed and astonished, and yet refuse to believe it, and be destroyed.

Paul says that God in that time might bring upon the nation similar calamities. By rejecting the Messiah and his gospel, and by persevering in wickedness, they would bring upon themselves the destruction of the temple, the city, and the nation. (This actually did occur in 70 A.D.)The Temple was destroyed and the Jews as a nation was desecrated and those who survive by fleeing the city were scattered abroad. Many lives were lost because of their unbelief and the fierce fighting against the establishing of Christian churches throughout the region.

According to Barnes Commentary, there are at least 5 important lessons we can learn from Acts 13:41:

(1) People may be greatly amazed and impressed by the doings or works of God, and yet be destroyed.

(2) People may possess a prejudice so obstinate that even a divine revelation will not won't bring them to remove it.

(3) The "false" security of sinners will not save them.

(4) There are people who will not believe in the possibility of their being lost, though it be declared by prophets, by apostles called preachers, teachers, witnesses, by the Savior, and by God. They will still remain with a false sense of  security, and suffer nothing to alarm or rouse them. But........

(5) As the false sense of security of the Jew furnished no safety against the Babylonians or the Romans, it is equally as true that the indifference and unconcern of sinners will not provide them any security against the dreadful wrath of God.

Sadly, there are multitudes  of nations and people who live amidst the displays of God's power and mercy in the redemption of sinners, and who witness the effects of his goodness and truth in revivals of religion, yet who continue to  live to despise all of it's display, being amazed and confounded by it; and who ultimately perish.

Blessings and Conflict at Antioch:                                                       (verses 44-52)
Saved Jews and Proselytes: "Preach to Us Next Week"                           (vs. 42-43)

And when the Jews were gone out of the synagogue, the Gentiles besought that these words might be preached to them the next Sabbath.    (verse 42)

The meaning here is when that part of the Jews who were in that congregation refused to believe the Gospel and  by hardening their hearts against Jesus left with their eyes and heart spiritually closed, thus fulfilling the prophesy The other Jews in the assembly that did believe, and were saved, along with the believing Gentiles asked Paul and Barnabas to come back next Sabbath and preach to them again.

Scholar Matthew Henry made the following analogy in his Matthew Henry Commentary on the Whole Bible:

"
There were some of the Jews that were so incensed against the preaching of the gospel, not to the Gentiles, but to themselves, that they would not bear to hear it, but went out of the synagogue while Paul was preaching (v. 42), in contempt of him and his doctrine, and to the disturbance of the congregation. It is probable they whispered among themselves, exciting one another to it, and did it by consent".

Now this bespoke,
1. An "open infidelity", as plain a profession of unbelief as coming to hear the gospel is of faith.

"They publicly avowed their contempt of Christ and of his doctrine and law, were not ashamed, neither could they blush; and they endeavored to create prejudices in the minds of others against the gospel, so they went out to draw others to follow their pernicious ways"

2. An obstinate infidelity.

"They went out of the synagogue, not only to show that they did not believe the gospel, but because they were resolved they would not, and therefore got out of the hearing of those things that had a tendency to convince them. They stopped their ears like the deaf adder. Therefore, it was justified that the gospel was taken from them, when they first took themselves from it, and turned themselves out of the church before they were turned out of it".

Matthew Henry's point:  For it is certainly true that God never leaves anybody untill they first leave him.

Now when the congregation was broken up, many of the Jews and religious proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas: who, speaking to them, persuaded them to continue in the grace of God.    (verse 43)

The very next Sabbath, when nearly the whole city came to hear the Word of God, the same Jews who heard the Word gladly last week now have a totally different attitude. The Scriptures said in Acts 13:44-52:

On the next Sabbath almost the whole city came together to hear the word of God. But when the Jews saw the multitudes, they were filled with envy; and contradicting and blaspheming, they opposed the things spoken by Paul.      (vs. 44-45)

These Jews could not bear  to worship with and fellowship the Gentiles, who believed in Christ, and now because of salvation in Jesus Christ were to be treated in equality with the Gentiles, who they despised and saw as heathens, and yet, according to the Gospel salvation brought about equality among the believers regardless of their race. Secondly, the "Judaizers" who rejected the Gospel message were so incensed that dared to preach such a doctrine that in their view posed a threat to their religious beliefs. So, these rebellious Jews responded in opposition the following ways:

a. Even though they had professed Jesus Christ themselves, their hatred and prejudice concerning the Gentiles was so great, they disavowed their new relationship with Jesus Christ and blaspheme His name and the Christian religion..

They spoke of Jesus with contempt and with scorn and denounced Him as being Messiah, as well as how the Messiah would come to His people. They now refused to believe that the Messiah would be lowly, despised and put to death and reverted back to the misbelief that the Messiah would come as a warrior, a rich man with an army to overthrow the Roman Empire.

b. Second, they openly contradicted the Apostles teachings, attempting to stir up strife and a hostile religious environment.

The Apostolic Response:        "Since You Have Rejected Christ "            (verses 46-47)

Then Paul and Barnabas grew bold and said, "It was necessary that the word of God should be spoken to you first; but since you reject it, and judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting life, behold, we turn to the Gentiles. For so the Lord has commanded us: 'I have set you as a light to the Gentiles that you should be for salvation to the ends of the earth.”

Both Paul and Barnabas (under the power of the Holy Spirit spoke boldly unafraid and not alarmed by their response::

"It was necessary that the word of God should first have been spoken to you." We had an obligation to present the gospel to our countrymen first because we were waiting for the Messiah to come. He came in Jesus Christ and yet, you rejected the truth. God sent you to bring the "light" of the gospel to the Gentiles.  (the same charge God gave the Israelites from the Exodus out of Egypt)   So, "since you have rejected the WORD of God and by your own conduct against the WORD have judged yourselves unworthy (unfit to be saved) of everlasting life, WE now turn to the Gentiles". That is we will now offer the gospel to the Gentiles and seek their salvation.

There are 3 important things we can take from this exchange:

(1) When people, even once, deliberately and solemnly reject the offers of God's mercy, it greatly endangers their salvation. Sometimes, the first rejection can lead to many rejections and ultimately, some may never yield to accepting Jesus Christ as their Savior.

(2) The gospel produces an effect wherever it is preached. The WORD of God never returns unto HIM void, but always accomplishes the task God sets out for HIS WORD to accomplish. This means whether a person accepts the WORD or rejects the WORD, the gospel message accomplished a response and an effect upon those who heard the message.

(3) When a sinner heart is hardened, and spurn the gospel, often times it the be duty of ministers to turn their efforts toward others where they may have more prospect of success.  In fact, Jesus told the disciples to "shake the dust from off their feet and go to the next town. The sad truth is not everyone you preach to is going to accept the invitation of salvation through Jesus Christ.

The people’s “end response” in Antioch of Pisidia was 2-fold:    (vs. 48-49)

The Gentiles rejoiced that from the mouths of Jews themselves they now heard a different doctrine.  They glorified the word of the Lord. They honored it as a message from God; they recognized and received it as the Word of God.

The Gentiles were glad and glorified the WORD of the Lord because all of them who believed that Jesus is the Messiah were now saved and had eternal life and instantly became disciples and witnesses and began to spread the WORD all throughout the region.

But the Jews.........                                                                                 (vs. 50-51)

The Jews stirred up the devout and honorable women, and the chief men of the city, and raised persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and expelled them out of their coasts.

The Jews, now indignant and becoming rude and violent incited the God-fearing women of high standing and the leading men of the city. They stirred up persecution against Paul and Barnabas, accused them of creating a great disturbance. It is likely that these were pagan matrons, who had become proselytes to the Jewish religion; and, as they were persons of affluence and respectability, they had considerable influence with the civil magistracy of the place, and probably their husbands were of this order; and it is likely that they used that influence, at the instigation of the Jews, to get the apostles expelled from the place.

In verse 51,  Paul and Barnabas responded by shaking the dust off their feet and left Antioch and travel to their next destination
: Iconium.

Conclusion:
And the disciples were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit.

Acts 14:19-28:    Paul and Barnabas: Set Aside For Ministry
Stoning, Escape to Derbe

"Then Jews from Antioch and Iconium came there; and having persuaded the multitudes, they stoned Paul and dragged him out of the city, supposing him to be dead.  However, when the disciples gathered around him, he rose up and went into the city. And the next day he departed with Barnabas to Derb.

Strengthening the Converts

And when they had preached the gospel to that city and made many disciples, they returned to Lystra, Iconium, and Antioch, strengthening the souls of the disciples, exhorting them to continue in the faith, and saying, "We must through many tribulations enter the kingdom of God." So when they had appointed elders in every church, and prayed with fasting, they commended them to the Lord in whom they had believed. And after they had passed through Pisidia, they came to Pamphylia. Now when they had preached the word in Perga, they went down to Attalia. From there they sailed to Antioch, where they had been commended to the grace of God for the work which they had completed.  Now when they had come and gathered the church together, they reported all that God had done with them, and that He had opened the door of faith to the Gentiles. So they stayed there a long time with the disciples.

Bible Study Outline: Exposition on the Book of Acts Chapter 14:19-28

Paul and Barnabas in Lystra: “Stoned and Cast Out For Dead” Part 2

Introduction: Reprimanded by the Apostles

After preaching the good news to the people in Lycaonia , the people, believing that Paul and Barnabas were two of their gods that appeared to them in human flesh sought to worship them as Jupiter and Mercury.  Paul and Barnabas both tore their clothes and attempted to reason with them but to no avail.  Paul told them to do what they were attempting to do was the most absurd thing they could ever do Paul and Barnabas gave them 2 clear reasons why they shouldn’t do such a thing
 [1.] "
Our nature will not admit it:
We also are men with the same passions you have. "We are men, and therefore you wrong yourselves if you expect those things from us that can only be given be in God only; and you wrong God if you give that honor to us, or to any other man, which is to be given to God only. We not only have such bodies as you see, but are of like passions with you, have hearts fashioned like as other
[2.] "Our doctrine is directly against it.
We can’t be added to the number of your gods. It’s our mission through the preaching of the gospel to convince you to abolish the gods you do have.
We preach unto you that you should turn from these vanities unto the living God. It’s our business to convert you from idolatry:" and so they had taken this occasion to show them how just and necessary it was that they should turn to God from idols,

Look as what the Lyconiaas did
  1. They now have stoned the very one that they were ready to worship as a god.
  2. Just before they were ready to adore him; now they sought to put him to death.

Point of Power:

Nothing is more fickle than popular favor. Your popularity will wax and wane.

Second point:
Wicked people will often travel further to do their evil than good people will travel to do that which is good.
Brought Back to Life: “Resurrected” and Returns To Lycaionia
(Verses 20-23)      anistemi –greek meaning: to stand up, rise again
Paul was dead, but Jesus brought him back to life. (vs. 20)
Alive again, Paul goes back into the city and he and Barnabas leaves Lycaonia the next day going back to Derbe.. The disciples who stood around his body while dead apparently prayed fervently for his deliverance and healing.

Follow Up Ministry:  Returning to Lystra, Iconium, and Antioch (Syria) Preaching the Gospel        (vs. 21)
More preaching….produced more disciples

Exhortation:: “continue in the faith”.                                              (vs. 22)
“Confirming the souls of the disciples, and exhorting them to continue in the faith, and that we must through much tribulation enter into the kingdom of God”.
What does it mean to “confirm the souls of the disciples”?

It means simply that Paul and Barnabas established, strengthened, and made firm, as well as  encouraged by the presenting the truth of God’s WORD by sharing the purpose of the gospel. ‎

The truth is positionally, these were young converts, new to the faith. They were surrounded by a plethora of enemies, and exposed to all sorts of temptations and to dangers. The dangers were real. The persecutions were vicious. These Judaizers were relentless to the extent if these converts were not covered by the local assembly and the Apostles themselves, they could easily slip and abandon their belief in Jesus Christ and fall back into the now old heathen ways God just delivered them from.

They were new converts. This was a new life experience to them. Status wise, they only had a slight acquaintance with the truths of the gospel, so, it was of the utmost importance that they should be further instructed in the truth, and established in the faith of the gospel. This was what Paul and Barnabas returned to accomplish. There is not the slightest evidence that they had not been admitted to the full privileges of the church before; or that any ceremony was now performed in confirming or strengthening them.

Here are 4 good reasons why this is so important to them and to new converts in the modern church now:

  1. Because such is the opposition of the world to pure religion that it cannot be avoided.
They saw this first hand in Lystra and Iconium .Even today in 2016, there are many factions, cults and special interest groups with secular humanism beliefs who deploy every means available to circumvent the preaching and teaching sound Biblical doctrine because God’s way for a man a to live is the way of holiness, purity and to love people but hate corrupt immoral behavior. The secular society sees the Gospel as a threat to their immorality and idolatry. So they use special interest lawyers in congress to enact new lax laws that persecute Christianity, outlaw Biblical standards and label the Christian world as an “outlaw” to modern society’s social mores.
(2) It is necessary to keep us from wandering, and to keep us in the path of duty.
Psalmist said in Psalms 119:67, 71:  Before I was afflicted I went astray.
That is to say I walked in error and began to transgress against the Word of God and live a sin filled life. I lived by the rudiments of the world and embraced erroneous views, living in neglect of my soul, in neglect of duty and in neglect of my life and obligation to God.

This was, the case of the Psalmist and the case of many of others. As a result, affliction often becomes so necessary to check us when we are going astray, and so useful in recalling us to the ways of duty and of truth.

But now I keep Your word. You are good, and do good. I actually benefitted from being afflicted
This was, in his case, as it is in thousands of others, the experience of his life. Hence, affliction often becomes so necessary to check us when we are going astray, and so useful in recalling us to the ways of duty and of truth. When we go through the afflictions of life as permitted by God, , many times, some error is corrected; some evil habit is broken and changed; some immoral social mode of life not consistent with pure religion is forsaken. A lot of times, pride is humbled; the heart is quickened in duty; habits of prayer are resumed or formed.  The soul becomes more gentle, calm, humble, spiritual, pure.
Afflictions are among the most precious means of grace. They are entirely under the direction of God. They may be endlessly varied, and adapted to the case of every individual.

Remember:

God knows every heart, and the best way to reach any heart. By sickness; by disappointment; by loss of property; by bereavement; by blighted hopes; by the ingratitude of others; by the unkindness of professed friends, and the malice of enemies; by domestic troubles; by the misconduct of children-perhaps the most severe of all human ills, and the hardest to bear; in ten thousand ways God can reach the heart, and break and crush it, and make it ready for the entrance of truth-as the farmer breaks and pulverizes the soil by the plow and the harrow, so that it shall be prepared to receive the seed.

“Teach me Your statutes. The proud have forged a lie against me, but I will keep Your precepts with my whole heart. Their heart is as fat as grease” .
That is,  they have prospered. They have health, property, influence, comforts of all kinds. heaven appears to smile upon them, and it seems as if it were one effect of a wicked course of life to make people prosperous.

“
But I delight in Your law. It is good for me that I have been afflicted, that I may learn Your statutes”. (NKJV)

(
3) It is necessary to wean us from the world; to always keep before our minds the great truth that we have here "no continuing city and no abiding place."
The trials of  life here makes us hunger for a world of rest. The opposition of sinners makes us desire the soon coming world  of Job 3:17: where "the wicked shall cease from troubling," and where there shall be eternal friendship and peace. (Revelation 21:1-4)

(4) Whenever we are persecuted and afflicted, we may remember that it has been the lot of the Christian life from the beginning.
We tread a path that has been watered by the tears of the saints, and rendered sacred by the shedding of the best blood on the earth. The Savior trod that path; and it is enough that the "disciple be as his master, and the servant as his lord,"
Matthew 10:24-25.
So
, it is through  through much tribulation and through many afflictions. It is truly the “valley of the shadows of death” It’s like David said because God is with me, I shall fear no evil. The end of this journey is to enter into the Kingdom of God and hear HIM say Servant, WELL DONE!
Why does the Baptist Church extend the “Right Hand of Fellowship?
The Baptist church established a method (a procedure) in fellowshipping new members to formally recognize them as “full fledged” members of their local assembly. After going through some form of orientation training to familiarize the new candidates with the policies and procedures of the local church and who  makes up the administrative infrastructure  (officers and leaders) we as the body of Christ in this assemble extend what we call the right hand of fellowship. By each member shaking the “right” hand of the new convert, we have according to the rules and regulations written in the bylaws of that church welcome thm to be a permanent member of our fellowship church and granted them “full” membership status with our church, which gives them the same rights and privileges of any “full fledged” member which can be summarized as having a “voice” and a “vote”. They have now become a part of our family as new family members.
Paul and Barnabas encouraged the disciples at Derbe to “continue in the faith” There were about 10 areas in their lives they needed to continue in faith in maturing and constantly doing:

Ten Things they were to continue In:
Well doing (Romans 2:7), Following the Lord (1 Samuel 12:14), The Word of God (John 8:31)
Christ's love (John 15:9; 1 Timothy 2:15), The grace of God (Acts 13:43), The faith (Acts 14:22; Colossians 1:23), God's goodness (Romans 11:22), Prayer (Colossians 4:2), Sound doctrines (1 Timothy 4:16; 2 Timothy 3:14)
The Son and the Father (1 John 2:24)

The importance of obedience

If we do these things we are blessed and if not, then we are cursed. God cannot lay down the conditions upon which He will bless us, then ignore them and bless if the conditions are not met. Remember Paul said it is trough much tribulation that we enter the kingdom of God

Finishing the Missionary Journey                                         (vs. 23-26)

So when they had appointed elders in every church, and prayed with fasting, they commended them to the Lord in whom they had believed. And after they had passed through Pisidia, they came to Pamphylia. Now when they had preached the word in Perga, they went down to Attalia. From there they sailed to Antioch, where they had been commended to the grace of God for the work which they had completed.

Finally They return home to Jerusalem and gave a full report    (vs. 27)
The End of Paul’s 1st Missionary Journey
And when they were come, and had gathered the church together, they rehearsed all that God had done with them, and how he had opened the door of faith unto the Gentiles.
They related what had happened; their dangers and their success. This they did because they had been sent out by the church, and it was proper that they should give an account of their work; and because it furnished a suitable occasion of gratitude to God for his mercy.
