Isaiah 9:2-7: "God's Great Light Shinning Out Of Darkness"
"The people who walked in darkness Have seen a great light; Those who dwelt in the land of the shadow of death, Upon them a light has shined.
You have multiplied the nation and increased its joy; They rejoice before You According to the joy of harvest, As men rejoice when they divide the spoil.  For You have broken the yoke of his burden And the staff of his shoulder, The rod of his oppressor, As in the day of Midian. For every warrior's sandal from the noisy battle, And garments rolled in blood, Will be used for burning and fuel of fire".

"For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of His government and peace There will be no end, Upon the throne of David and over His kingdom, To order it and establish it with judgment and justice From that time forward, even forever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this".   (NKJV)

Isaiah 9:1-7:        “Great Light Bursting Forth from Darkness”
Introduction:

I’m sure the last thing you would ever equate the virgin birth of Jesus Christ with is any form of darkness. Almost immediately, I can hear your initial reaction as being what the Bibles said concerning God, that is, GOD IS LIGHT and there is no darkness in HIM at all. Now, if this is your response, you are 100% correct, however, there are some things you haven't taken in  account of how Our Sovereign God move and operate in the affairs of this world, especially in the lives of human beings whether they are in a fallen state or going through the complete “redemptive” process. What this means is, you either missed or you didn't take into account the role "darkness" played in regards to fulfilling that 1st prophecy God proclaimed to Adam and Eve after they disobeyed HIM and fell from grace in the Garden of Eden. Believe it or not, "darkness" displayed in different manners around us and coming out of us played a major role in the redemption process, and brings forth the significance of this birth in Bethlehem and the baby Jesus lying in the manger.

Beginning with this 1st prophecy in Genesis 3:15, God in the progression of human history gave other revelations to us about the birth of the Messiah. These revelations came in "peace meal" as God gave us more clues to this prophecy through other scriptures  progressively in the Old Testament which describes a time frame spanning a total of 42 generations, leading up to and culminated in the virgin birth of "Emmanuel", Jesus Christ, the “Christ child, that “Holy Thing”, conceived of the Holy Ghost birthed by and described to Mary by Gabriel the angel as the One who would become the “Son of God".

The text says the people who walked in darkness have seen a great light. Isaiah speaks to them about a future event in past tense as if this event had already taken place. To understand how light can burst forth out of darkness, we need a greater understanding about walking in darkness.....

In understanding Darkness the first thing we need to know is there are many definitions and types of "darkness". And as I eluded to in the outset, all of them played a tremendous and sometimes deadly role in the life and deliverance of fallen man. It was a dark time in many ways: dark socially, dark politically, and dark spiritually yet, Isaiah was prompted by the Holy Spirit to broadcast these words of hope found in the sermon text. And when you get to the 6th verse, Isaiah gives a detail description of the Messiah who was to come and this description gave the people further insight of what type of Messiah was coming. Isaiah said HIs name shall be called “Wonderful,“ Counselor,” the “Mighty God” “Everlasting Father”, and the Prince of Peace.”

Notice all of these attributes that Isaiah described were ascribed to a “son”, a baby not yet born, but would be born to a virgin conceive by the overshadowing of the Holy Ghost who’s name would be called Emmanuel” named so because his name meant” God is with us.”

Changing the way we celebrate Christmas:  In the "Private Sector":

Another evidence of darkness in today's world centers around how we celebrate Christmas in general. Every year, around the month of December, in fact, the day right after Thanksgiving, we begin to get into what we have called the “Christmas” spirit. People get into a frenzy, gearing up for all the “Black Friday” sales and specials
and literally become aggressive, even violent toward each other fighting over potential gifts that are reduced in price but limited in quantity.. The “commercialization” of Christmas has caused many to forget what Christmas is really about. That’s the obvious. Here’s the “not so obvious” A lot of Christians get involved in the "Black Friday" frenzy and misbehave also and become part of the “darkness” that fosters misbehavior. So in the secular world, the manger has been pushed out of the way and Santa seemingly has become the "new savior".

Another important point I wish to emphasize at this juncture of this message is: as the church of Jesus Christ, we are in the post resurrection and ascending stage beyond Jesus' virgin birth and resurrection, it's alright to remember the manger but, by now we should be celebrating with great expectancy His second coming because the manger and the cross is behind us, but the second coming and the crown is before us. Jesus is coming back and He could rapture the true church at any moment and we will be change from mortality to immortality in a moment...in a twinkling of an eye at any moment.

Now the text here and every text in the 4 gospels sustains the fact that Jesus has already come the first time and fulfilled the purpose of redemption.
Jesus has already fulfilled Isaiah 61:1-2a, the latter being to preach the acceptable ear of the Lord. The Remainder of the 2nd verse is yet to be fulfilled in our time.....YET....The rest of the 61st chapter will happen in His second coming.......Salvation is already here!

Jesus has redeemed us by HIS shed blood, at the cross, Everyone who accepts Jesus as their Lord and Savior and what he did at Calvary right now is redeemed, saved. Don't get me wrong....It’s great to remember His virgin birth and we must always do so….but…the redemptive work was done on the cross, in HIS death, burial and resurrection and post scripted by the Great Commission and the promise of power from the Holy Ghost right before HIS ascending up into the clouds.

Looking Back and Pressing forward:

So the Isaiah text allows us to look back before the cross to celebrate the greatest historic divine event that happened in behalf of human history…because this historic event brought fallen mankind new life…and new hope….. redemption and reconciliation with our Creator God. Take a closer look at the living conditions at the time of the text… To better understand and better appreciate the significance of this prophecy Isaiah spoke about that started in Chapter 7:14 when Isaiah told a scared but proud 20 year old Ahaz, the King of Israel  about a sign God would give the nation of Israel because the king refused in pride to ask God for one..  a "sign" about a virgin conceiving and that immaculate conception is what led us to the manger…to this chosen hay troth…in a chosen stable… in a chosen city called Bethlehem….where there was no room in the inn….in that chosen city….for the one who God chose to save us from our sin….in that chosen place called the City of David a long time ago.

Away in a Manger: The New born King is born.

As we fast forwarding from Isaiah 9 to Luke Chapter One…Luke, the beloved physician said at the time of our Savior’s birth…. "There were in that same country of JESUS’ birth…shepherds were abiding in their fields and keeping watch over their flocks throughout the night…and lo…the angel of the Lord came upon them….and the glory of the Lord shone around about them…. and they were sore afraid"….they were terrified!….They didn’t know what to make of this phenomena…but then…an angelic herald said to them:

“
Fear not… BEHOLD…    I bring you good news…good tidings of great joy…for all people…For unto you is born this day…. in the City of David ….A Savior which is Christ the Lord"… and this will be a sign….the indicator……you need….You will find Him….a baby… wrapped in swaddling cloth and laying in a manger….And about that time….along with the angel….euphoria filled the air because the heavenly choir started singing  praising God and saying ….Glory to God in the highest and on earth… peace… good will  toward men….

Away in the Manger: The New King is sought....God's Son is given!

Now….
as we  go back to the Gospel of Matthew….Chapter 2 … Matthew said in that chapter….. after the birth of Jesus….our Emanuel… 3 wise men from the Orient came to Jerusalem to Herod the “sitting” king looking for the Christ the child anointed to be king asking: "Where is HE… the one born King of the Jews….in other words: Where is the one anointed the real King? This king has a star. We saw the king’s "GPS" star when we were in the Orient. We followed HIS star here to Jerusalem so when we find HIM, we come to worship HIM…

Here's the scenario: In Luke the shepherds were given the good news….and told where HE was….In Matthew…the 3 wise men were in search for the good News and guided to where HE was and Herod, the sitting king was disturbed to find out being appointed by man (Rome) does not always anoint you by God…You can have a lofty position and have no holy backing….Having a title does not always mean you are entitled…

More than a Jewish Messiah

Also, I found it interesting that
3 wise men from the Orient became fixated in the east on seeking the Christ child and followed a bright star west to find HIM….This heavenly GPS was their sign and their indicator that the Christ child ….the true king had arrived…which tell us that the birth of the Messiah was not just a Jewish event …..Jesus’ birth is much bigger than that… because His birth would literally change the whole world …..

So here's the
Ultimately truth:…. The whole earth since the fall of Adam and Eve was suffering from the birth pangs waiting of Jesus to come….Because SIN entered into this world and death came as a punishment for SIN, the whole earth had been in labor for 42 generations….The moment the pair on the ground disobeyed God and ate the fruit from the forbidden tree, "SIN" had a cataclysmic effect on everything! It was so much so that all of nature had been out of whack every since……and from a spiritual point of view in regards to the relationship between Holy God and now sinful lost man, It had been dark even dismal for a long time…..the world and mankind suffered morning sickness in darkness waiting on God's great light to break through the darkness.

Taking a historic look at the time of Isaiah’s proclamation both in Isaiah 7:14 and in our text today, Jesus was born in a time when darkness was everywhere in every sense of the word….
. It was dark politically....dark socially....dark spiritually...Darkness was everywhere! The Lord told us to look forward to the coming Messiah….Look for the ONE…  HE declared would come in Genesis 3:15 when HE said the seed of the woman would bruise the serpent’s head and the serpent would bruise the heel of her seed….The people were in open rebellion....many while in Babylonian captivity intermingled and intermarried with their captors. Some took on Persian wives while in Persia and about the time between Ezra and Nehemiah when there were 2 great exoduses back to the Promised land (Israel),. Some got caught up in Greek mythology and became Hellenists - Greek speaking Jews...but the ones who did go back they were looking for a marvelous light to shine through a thickness of darkness of all the oppression they had endured..…

God Navigating Through the darkness: Darkness..

And while I’m at it there is something great we need to know: God has always responded to darkness all throughout the history of this world….especially in the affairs of mankind….whenever sin abounded…every time Satan and demons  splattered fresh coats of corruptive paints over the face of God’s creation…In fact….God has always done His greatest miraculous work by bursting forth out as a marvelous light breaking through the cloaks of darkness. In all those times when it seemed like in society and in the world where it looked like there was nothing but utter chaos… .and darkness was everywhere… in every facet of society…. When the times and conditions were right….God’s providence and plan of redemption always came shining forth…as a Great Light bursting forth out of sheer darkness… How do we know this? As a matter of fact:

A "Dark" Beginning and a History of dark times:

This earth started out in utter chaos….In the beginning.... darkness was everywhere… Genesis 1:2 said the earth was formless….it was void and in total chaos…the deep waters were cloaked and covered with darkness…. The first thing God did in creation while HIS spirit hovered over the waters that covered the earth…was move upon the deep waters covered by darkness and said “Let there be light”!.....Light immediately burst forth out of the darkness that covered the deep waters and separated the waters from the waters…

Now, fast forward to Genesis Chapter 6, and another kind of darkness comes to mind. Sin had become so rampant by this time in human history the Bible said that man had become so corrupted with evil that his heart was on evil on a continual basis. It was so much so, that God repent, actually regretted the day he made man and set in motion a plan to wipe him off the face of the earth because of the darkness of sin.... But...in Noah....One man one light in the midst of all that darkness, Noah found grace in the eyes of God.....Noah was light cloaked by a dark society.

Moving up the corridor of time....…to the Egyptian Empire…at the time of the Exodus… God used darkness and it came forth as punishment and a plague…because it symbolized God’s judgment against Egypt and the worship of “Ra”….Egypt’s sun god…Look at what  the Lord did….

The bible said…God pitched Egypt in total darkness….so dark and so thick ….that you could actually feel the darkness…..and nobody could see nobody in Egypt….but…while it was dark in Egypt…  God’s  marvelous light remained untouched by darkness in the land of Goshen where the Hebrew children was living….and then as the Hebrews exited out of Egypt….Yahweh’s light came forth as a cloud by day…  form darkness  in the face of the Egyptian army… and light protecting the back of HIS people leaving Egypt…..and a pillar of fire by night… God’s light delivered them from the darkness of 430 years of slavery wrapped up in in from Egyptian bondage… a freedom parting of the Red Sea…and the giving of HIS LAW from Mount Sinai..

So by the time we get to Mount Sinai….we see the darkness of the Shekinah glory cloud covering the top most part of the mountain… symbolizing the awesome power  and the great mystery that surrounds our understanding or lack of understanding of the Great I AM THAT I AM…giving us a different meaning of darkness…
And then…. you see the same cloud covering the Mercy seat above the Ark of the Covenant representing the presence of God with HIS people in 1 Kings 8:12.  When the psalmist in Psalms 97:2 describes the inscrutable nature of God's workings among the sons of men, you can hear him say: "Clouds and darkness are round about him. He’s saying that" God dwells in thick darkness.

This is why must trust the Lord with all of our hearts and we can’t lean to our own understanding… like God said in Isaiah 55: 8-9   For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord….For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts. Now you must understand….even though God’s Holy light burst forth from the midst of darkness…God Himself has no darkness in HIM at all…

And you saw the effects on Moses when he came out of the dark Shekinah cloud having been there in the cloud with God for 40 days….You  know the story ….When Moses went up into the darkness of the Shekinah  glory cloud…talked with God….for 40 days…..got 2 clay tablets with the 10 Commandments…. written in God’s own handwriting….and by the time Moses came out of that cloud…the glory of the Lord was all over Moses…and lit up Moses face ….and when the people saw him his face was shinning  so bright that they had to put a veil over his face…

Oh if we would go up to where God is ….. in the study of HIS word…..in prayer and the meditations of our hearts…..if we learn to let go and let HIM have HIS way in us….HIS WAY with us….HIS WAY through us….for our benefit…..and allow the Spirit of the Lord that sealed and save us and dwells now on the inside of us …..overshadow us in our thoughts and in our mind  with the mind of Christ….and create in us a clean heart and renew in us a right spirit…WHAT a wonderful change the Lord would make in our lives and we would finally .If we would prepare to celebrate the impact of the birth of the Messiah and take the time to really  commune with HIM….worship HIM….praise HIM…I believe the countenance of the Lord would cause our faces to shine too….

It was a dark time when Isaiah spoke…it was a time of darkness….a time of ignorance about the powerful God that chose these wayward people Judah had a good king named Hezekiah and even though he wasn’t perfect there was moral depravity…war was imminent…circumstances were adverse…You had a 20 year old king on the throne Judah’s ruling a fearful nation…..the country was about to be invaded by Israel and Syria….He ruled Judah…Pekah ruled Israel….Rezin the son of Remaliah ruled Syria….Israel and Syria plotted to overthrow Judah…As a matter of fact the Bible said they came to Jerusalem  to make war with Ahaz….but….this young king is scared out of his wits…Chapter 7 said Isaiah was sent to this young headstrong scared king………

God told Isaiah: go meet Ahaz  the king….at the end of the aqueduct from the upper pool take your son Shear -Jashub with you ….Tell the king:' Take heed, and be quiet; Don’t be afraid or be fainthearted for these two stubs of smoking firebrands They have plotted evil against you….Don’t  worry about them ….Whatever they plotted…..won’t stand and it won’t come to pass …Ephraim in 65 years won’t be a people anymore…And then God told a as a act of faith…ask of HIM a sign…You know the story this young king refused to do so….Isaiah  responded by saying to him: Is it not enough you House of David that you try the patience of men…Will you  also try the patience of My God? You say that you   will not try God and ask Him of any sign…WELL….The Lord Himself shall give you a sign of His own: a virgin shall conceive ….give birth to a son and shall call him Emmanuel…..

A Fresher and Deeper Perspective of the Manger
Now as I get ready to come to a close….here’s why we need a fresher and more deeper perspective of the manger…..Jesus already has come in the manger came…..Jesus already have been crucified….He already ascended into glory and is at the right hand of the Father interceding in our behalf as our /great High  Priest….Every year we celebrate his first coming….but we need to celebrate the fact that Jesus is coming again…..Look at the fiber of the  world we are living in today….The world is sinking into darkness….yet we who are saved rejoice in the fact that we can still see HIS marvelous light

Look at what we deal with even now….natural things are being pushed aside by un-natural things …. Moral behavior got shoved to the ground by immoral behavior….the earth was looking for her king  to come back… Sunshine and blue skies especially in these days and times are challenged by irrational weather patterns… tsunamies….earthquakes…..dormant volcanic from once dead dormant hills…are beginning to erupt once again…as sin  began to overtake the heart and mind of man….noxious weeds and volcanic eruptions and crazy weather….The world is getting darker and darker….  Well…I got great news fro you….God’s Great Light will burst through the world’s darkness one last time…..Jesus said He would make all things new….
and I heard John the revelator say in Revelation 19:11-16
Now I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse. And He who sat on him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and makes war.  His eyes were like a flame of fire, and on His head were many crowns. He had* a name written that no one knew except Himself. He was clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God.  And the armies in heaven, clothed in fine linen, white and clean,* followed Him on white horses.  Now out of His mouth goes a sharp* sword, that with it He should strike the nations. And He Himself will rule them with a rod of iron. He Himself treads the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. And He has on His robe and on His thigh a name written: King of Kings and Lord of Lords……

Not only that….but John also said
in Revelation Chapter 21: .I saw a new heaven and a new earth coming down for God out of heaven…because the first heaven and the first earth died….This world as we know it is going to die… and God going to make a new heaven and a new earth…. Where the wicked will cease from troubling and the weary shall be at rest….

Secondly joy will increase…..this joy that I have this world didn’t give it to me and this world can’t take it away….I’m so  glad Jesus came the first time and I celebrate that….but I believe it’s time for all of us to look forward to His second coming…..a celebrate the fact that sin will be no more…sickness will be no more Satan will be no more demons will be no more…war will be no more…….Darkness will be no more the Glory of the Lord will always shine bright all around us...by day and by night.... Jesus is the Light of the World.

Acts 9:20-43  Saul Preaches Christ: The Son of God (Messiah)

I"mmediately he preached the Christ in the synagogues, that He is the Son of God. Then all who heard were amazed, and said, "Is this not he who destroyed those who called on this name in Jerusalem, and has come here for that purpose, so that he might bring them bound to the chief priests?"
But Saul increased all the more in strength, and confounded the Jews who dwelt in Damascus, proving that this Jesus is the Christ".

Saul Escapes Death
"Now after many days were past, the Jews plotted to kill him. But their plot became known to Saul. And they watched the gates day and night, to kill him. Then the disciples took him by night and let him down through the wall in a large basket."

Saul at Jerusalem
"And when Saul had come to Jerusalem, he tried to join the disciples; but they were all afraid of him, and did not believe that he was a disciple. But Barnabas took him and brought him to the apostles. And he declared to them how he had seen the Lord on the road, and that He had spoken to him, and how he had preached boldly at Damascus in the name of Jesus. So he was with them at Jerusalem, coming in and going out. And he spoke boldly in the name of the Lord Jesus and disputed against the Hellenists, but they attempted to kill him. 30 When the brethren found out, they brought him down to Caesarea and sent him out to Tarsus".

The Church Prospers
"Then the churches throughout all Judea, Galilee, and Samaria had peace and were edified. And walking in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, they were multiplied".

Aeneas Healed
"Now it came to pass, as Peter went through all parts of the country, that he also came down to the saints who dwelt in Lydda.  There he found a certain man named Aeneas, who had been bedridden eight years and was paralyzed.  And Peter said to him, "Aeneas, Jesus the Christ heals you. Arise and make your bed." Then he arose immediately. So all who dwelt at Lydda and Sharon saw him and turned to the Lord."

Dorcas Restored to Life
"At Joppa there was a certain disciple named Tabitha, which is translated Dorcas. This woman was full of good works and charitable deeds which she did. But it happened in those days that she became sick and died. When they had washed her, they laid her in an upper room. And since Lydda was near Joppa, and the disciples had heard that Peter was there, they sent two men to him, imploring him not to delay in coming to them".

"Then Peter arose and went with them. When he had come, they brought him to the upper room. And all the widows stood by him weeping, showing the tunics and garments which Dorcas had made while she was with them. But Peter put them all out, and knelt down and prayed. And turning to the body he said, "Tabitha, arise." And she opened her eyes, and when she saw Peter she sat up. Then he gave her his hand and lifted her up; and when he had called the saints and widows, he presented her alive. And it became known throughout all Joppa, and many believed on the Lord. So it was that he stayed many days in Joppa with Simon, a tanner".   (NKJV)

Bible Study Series Part 2: Biblical Exposition of the Book of Acts Chapter 9:19- 43   The Beginning of Saul’s Evangelistic Ministry…Acts 9: 19-31…Peter’s Ministry Continues Acts 9: 32-43
Introduction:

In verse 18, Saul after he received his sight immediately got up and was baptized. This was the standard procedure after conversion for all the early Christian converts based on Acts 2:38-41. Saul has already received the gift of the Holy Ghost before his baptism. Now the Lord is preparing Saul for the active ministry. Saul is in a weaken condition, having gone without food for 3 days, so the Bible tells us in verse 19,Saul was fed, and he regained his strength. Saul remained in Damascus with the disciples there for a certain period of time. How long it actually was is not specified…but long enough to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ before he left Damascus. It was from Damascus that Saul traveled, starting his evangelistic ministry in Arabia, then before going to Jerusalem came back to Damascus, then after being gone from Jerusalem 3 years, returns to Jerusalem according to Galatians 1:17.   (vs. 19)

Saul preaches Jesus Christ and confounds Jews at Damascus  (verses 19-20)

Saul immediately from his first sermon preached Jesus Christ in the synagogues, declaring to the people under the power of the Holy Spirit that Jesus is the Son of God, that is Jesus Christ is the Messiah! (vs. 20)

Further evidence of the power God placed in him to preach is found in the following Scriptures: 1 Corinthians 2:1-16… 2 Corinthians 12:1,7…Galatians 1:11-16…and Galatians 2:7.
During the unspecified time he spent in Damascus with the disciples who resided there, Saul obvious studied the scriptures further, seeing he already had ample knowledge of the Law, They sought Jesus in the scriptures for years. The Holy Spirit showed him everywhere in the word that Jesus was the “Word made flesh” and as Paul declared to the Romans that Christ is the end of the Law for righteousness sake to everyone that will believe it.

Note: Saul’s wiliness to be used immediately by the Holy Spirit was evidence that his conversion experience was real, that he was sincere in following Jesus and truly has switched his allegiance from the Sanhedrin and the way of the Pharisee to a friend and advocate of Jesus and the propagation of the Gospel message.

Reaction of the Jews in Damascus:                                                      (vs. 21)
“All that heard him were amazed, and said; Is not this he that destroyed them which called on this name in Jerusalem, and came hither for that intent, that he might bring them bound unto the chief priests”?

They were amazed at his sudden change of heart and conviction. "Is not this he that destroyed those who called on this name in Jerusalem, and now does he call on this name himself, and persuade others to call upon it, and strengthen the hands of those that do?" Isn’t this Saul who persecutes the church and came here to Damascus to arrest and bring back to Jerusalem those who are members of the Way and dare to call on the name of Jesus?

Saul’s Response:       increased in strength and confounded the Jews         (vs. 22)
Here we can see the influence the Holy Spirit as he rest upon a submitted vessel.

a.  Saul was so full of Christ himself, the Holy Spirit within him led him to preach him to others. As Jesus came to His own (the Jews) Paul was compelled to preach to the Jews first in Damascus in their synagogues where they refuted the Gospel , Christ, punish and afflict the disciples who professed Jesus and clung to the Mosaic Law. Paul faced the enemies of Christ where they were most daring, and

b. He preached Christ; that HE is the Son of God (Messiah) Paul said: “We preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus our Lord; nothing but Christ, and him crucified”. He preached concerning Christ, that he is the Son of God, his beloved Son, in whom he is well pleased, and with us in him, and not otherwise. Paul overwhelmed them to the point tit angered them that he was so able to refute their arguments against .Jesus Christ in the same manner Stephen did. Ultimately, he cause them to rise up in a furor
.

II. First Murder Attempt Against Saul                                                (verses 23-25)
The Jews (unbelieving) plotted to kill Saul. This occurred after Saul had been here 3 years and was about to leave Damascus the second time.

They secured Damascus and waited, watching the gates day and night for Saul to appear.

At night, the disciples in Damascus lowered Saul down out of the city in a basket.

Saul:  In Jerusalem:          “Shunned and rejected”  Accepted by Barnabas        (verses 26- 28)

Saul. Rejected by the Jewish disciples in Jerusalem (fear)   (vs. 26)

He made every effort to get closely united to them, and to be in religious fellowship with them but had a hard time because of the following reasons:

They feared Saul still at this point and many thought his change of attitude and behavior was an elaborate trick to trap them and arrest and persecute them.

They found it hard to believe it possible that a person as hateful and fierce as Saul once was could be converted to the faith of Christ and make a complete “about face” in his beliefs.. They didn’t believe that some sins could ever be forgiven like murder.

The full power of Divine grace, in the conversion of the soul, was not yet completely known to any of the believers at this point. They understood repentance and the reason behind baptism for the remission of sin and the reception of the Holy Spirit to some degree.

The “church” was still somewhat in the early formative stages. Many doctrines were yet to be taught.

Barnabas took him and brought Saul before the Apostles in Jerusalem(vs. 27-28)
Barnabas took Saul (Paul) to see Peter and James. For some reason, you get to impression the apostles had not heard of the ministry of Saul. Apparently Barnabas was in Damascus at some point in time time during the unspecified time Saul stayed and preached in Damascus or while Saul did evangelical work traveling in Arabia. What we do know is he did take Saul to see Peter and James. Barnabas spoke up in Saul’s behalf to verify that he was a changed man.

Saul: In Jerusalem….Preached and Persecuted               (verses 29- 31)

In Jerusalem, Saul spoke boldly (full of the Holy Spirit) in the authority (Name) of Jesus proclaiming Jesus Christ as Messiah, disputing against the “Grecians.” (Greek speaking Jews) (vs.29)

In response, the Grecians in angry opposition sought to kill Saul. At this point Saul was seen in the same manner they saw Stephen and Peter, as a blasphemer of the Law, the Temple and God. (2nd attempt on his life) but the brethren knew about it and helped Saul get to Caesarea. Saul began to see what Jesus meant when he told Saul through Ananias that he would suffer much because of Jesus Christ. (vs. 30)

Remember:
The cost of true discipleship is very high to the extent it could cost you your life. From this point in Chapter 9 of Acts, you hear nothing else concerning Saul’s ministry. The next time you hear about Saul in any way is in Chapter 11:25. This verse earmarks 8 years of the life of Saul since his conversion experience outside Damascus.
Concerning the Welfare of the Churches (period of rest and prosperity)           (vs. 31)

“Then had the churches rest throughout all Judaea and Galilee and Samaria, and were edified; and walking in the fear of the Lord, and in the comfort of the Holy Ghost, were multiplied”. There were 5 evidences of “rest” during this time:
1.  Rest or peace — no more persecution from the Jews
2.  Edification or building up (the church got stronger spiritually)
3.  Walking in the fear of the Lord (Holy reference for the Lord)
4.  Walking in the comfort of the Spirit
5.  Increasing in numbers (membership growth)

This verse describes briefly the blessings, purity, and overall state of the early church. The primary reason for the rest from persecution: There was a Roman edict at this time that made it mandatory that statues of the Roman emperor must be placed in the temple at Jerusalem. Rome sent an army to enforce this edict and had orders to destroy all Jews who stood in opposition to it. This action redirected the Jews focus with their own persecution thus leaving them no time for persecuting Christians. The conversion of Paul could not have stopped all the widespread persecution in all Judea, Samaria, and Galilee.

V.               The Ministry of Peter (Continued)                                   (verses 32- 35)
The healing of Aeneas (Palsy stricken for 8 years)
5 known types of Palsy According to Matthew 4:24
Many infirmities were included under the general name of palsy in the New Testament.
1. The paralytic shock, affecting the whole body.
2. The hemiplegy, affecting only one side of the body; the most frequent form of the disease.
3. The paraplegy, affecting all the system below the neck.
4. The catalepsy. This is caused by a contraction of the muscles in the whole or a part of the body, and is very dangerous. The effects are very violent and fatal. For instance, if, when a person is struck, he happens to have his hand extended, he is unable to draw it back; if not extended, he is unable to stretch it out. It gradually becomes diminished in size, and dried up in appearance. Hence, it was called the withered hand,
Matthew 12:10-13.
5. The cramp. This, in Eastern countries, is a fearful malady, and by no means unfrequent. It originates from chills in the night. The limbs, when seized by it, remain unmovable, and the person afflicted with it resembles one undergoing a torture. This was probably the disease of the servant of the centurion, Matthew 8:6; and Luke 7:2. Death follows from this disease in a few days.

And Peter said unto him, Aeneas, Jesus Christ maketh thee whole: arise, and make thy bed. And he arose immediately.(vs. 34)

Note: Peter said “
Jesus Christ maketh thee whole”, for he had no power to heal but was used as an instrument whereby the Lord would bring forth healing. God chose to put honor upon those primitive preachers of his word, in order that men might see that they were commissioned from heaven.
Instructions given:
Arise (get up), and make thy bed. Give now, full proof that Jesus Christ healed you completely, getting up and making up your bed. Aeneas was at home, and therefore was not commanded, as the paralytic person, to take up his bed; but he was ordered to make it up, that everybody might see that the cure was perfect.

The Effect:  He got up immediately.  Everybody from the region Lydda and Saron  (Sharon) turned to the Lord and was converted.(vs. 35)

Healing in Joppa:     Dorcas (Tabitha)                              (verses 36-43)

Tabitha was a woman distinguished for good works, but one day got sick and died. The people washed and prepared her body for burial, and laid her in the upper room. The disciples living there in Joppa heard Peter was in town and sent for him to come and see them.

Peter finally came and put everybody out of the upper chamber (as not to bring undo attention to himself or the woman) then Peter prayed, and turned toward her body and said: “Tabitha”  (vs. 40)

Tabitha opened her eyes, and when she saw Peter, she sat up. Peter lifted her up by the hand, then called for the saints and widows and presented her to them alive. (vs. 41)

The word of this miracle got around all throughout Joppa and caused many to believe in the Lord Jesus. (vs. 42)

Note: This was the first miracle of this kind done through the Apostles. It wasn’t done as an act of benevolence, or the mean of strengthening the faith of the disciples, and gaining credit to the cause of Christianity. It was done also to bring many sincere converts to the Lord, so that the church was thereby both build up and multiplied.

Conclusion:
Peter afterwards spent many days in Joppa living with Simon the Tanner.
(vs. 43)
Peter took advantage of the revival among the people by that went on in Joppa. He continued to teach and preach Christ. Peter lead them here for about three years Peter did not stay with the "millionaires" of Joppa, but lived in a humble abode with Simon the Tanner.

The “Culmination” of the First Period of the Christian Church:

During this period in the history of the church, the Gospel was preached to the Jews only. Prior to Acts Chapter 10, no Gentile before Cornelius was directly preached to. Salvation was of the Jews: theirs were the fathers, the covenants, and the promises, and from them came Christ Jesus; and it was right that they should have the first offer of a salvation which, while it was a light to lighten the Gentiles, was to be the glory of the Israelite people. When the Jews as a people and nation utterly rejected the Gospel of Jesus Christ, then the apostles turned unto the Gentiles. Among them the Christian church was founded; and thus the reprobates became the elect, and the elect became reprobates.
Culminating with the Dorcas being brought back to life from death, we have the ending of the first period of the Christian church. About 8 years had passed since Pentecost, during which time the gospel had been preached only to the Jews.  Fulfilling Matthew 10:6; John 1:11; Romans 1:16. The church was founded by Jews and for Jews. God predicted that the Jews would reject the gospel, so He planned to change administrations (Matthew 21:33-46). The conversion of Saul of Tarsus was the beginning of that change.

Important Note:
Saul of Tarsus was not a man of a light, fickle, and uncultivated mind. His natural powers were vast, his character the most decided, and his education, as we learn from his historian, and from his writings, was at once both liberal and profound. He was born and brought up in a city which enjoyed every privilege of which Rome itself could boast, and was a successful rival both of Rome and Athens in arts and science. Though a Jew, it is evident that his education was not confined to matters that concerned his own people and country alone. He had read the best Greek writers, as his style, allusions, and quotations sufficiently prove; and, in matters which concern his own religion, he was instructed by Gamaliel, one of the most celebrated doctors the synagogue had ever produced. He was evidently master of the three great languages which were spoken among the only people who deserved the name of nations-the Hebrew, and its prevailing dialect, the Chaldaio-Syriac; the Greek, and the Latin; language which, notwithstanding all the cultivation through which the earth has passed, maintain their rank, which is a most decisive superiority over all the languages of the universe.

Acts 9:1-20: The Damascus Road: Saul Converted
(Acts 22:6-16; 26:12-18)

Then Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest 2 and asked letters from him to the synagogues of Damascus, so that if he found any who were of the Way, whether men or women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem.
As he journeyed he came near Damascus, and suddenly a light shone around him from heaven. Then he fell to the ground, and heard a voice saying to him, "Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me? And he said, "Who are You, Lord?"Then the Lord said, "I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. It is hard for you to kick against the goads."So he, trembling and astonished, said, "Lord, what do You want me to do?"Then the Lord said to him, "Arise and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do."And the men who journeyed with him stood speechless, hearing a voice but seeing no one. Then Saul arose from the ground, and when his eyes were opened he saw no one. But they led him by the hand and brought him into Damascus. And he was three days without sight, and neither ate nor drank.

The Baptism of Saul:     Ananias Baptizes Saul
Now there was a certain disciple at Damascus named Ananias; and to him the Lord said in a vision, "Ananias." And he said, "Here I am, Lord." So the Lord said to him, "Arise and go to the street called Straight, and inquire at the house of Judas for one called Saul of Tarsus, for behold, he is praying.  And in a vision he has seen a man named Ananias coming in and putting his hand on him, so that he might receive his sight."
Then Ananias answered, "Lord, I have heard from many about this man, how much harm he has done to Your saints in Jerusalem. And here he has authority from the chief priests to bind all who call on Your name." But the Lord said to him, "Go, for he is a chosen vessel of Mine to bear My name before Gentiles, kings, and the children of Israel.  For I will show him how many things he must suffer for My name's sake."

And Ananias went his way and entered the house; and laying his hands on him he said, "Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you came, has sent me that you may receive your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit." Immediately there fell from his eyes something like scales, and he received his sight at once; and he arose and was baptized. So when he had received food, he was strengthened. Then Saul spent some days with the disciples at Damascus.

Bible Study Outline:  Exposition on the Book of Acts Chapter 9

2 Part Series: The Stoning of Stephen…. the Persecution of the Church and the Conversion of Saul of Tarsus
Introduction:

In Chapter 8, Stephen who God empowered with the Holy Spirit and used in a mighty way to minister and preach the gospel of Jesus Christ was tried and convicted by a wicked Sanhedrin council who flat out refused to acknowledge that they were responsible for the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and it was them, and their countrymen over the centuries that were guilty and not Stephen. By countering each accusation of blasphemy (against Moses and the Law, and against the Temple) brought against him, Stephen successfully pointed out time and time again  throughout  his reviewing the Jewish history, that the Jews as a race and the Sanhedrin Council had been guilty of both expressing both unbelief and rebellion against Jehovah God themselves, to the extent that it was really them, and not Stephen that “blasphemed” and rebelled against Moses, refusing to accept his “God given” leadership and  (in the fulfillment of prophecy) then refusing to listen to the “promised” future Prophet (Jesus Christ) when He finally came to them.

Stephen in his rebuttal brought back to the remembrance of the council the many times how the ancestors had constantly disobeyed God, followed after “other” gods and refusing to believe and obey the Old Testament prophets. To make matters worse, Stephen brought up once again that the Council recently even killed the promised Messiah Jesus Christ, who  was the future prophet Moses alluded to. At the conclusion of Stephen’s trial, they became so furious when Stephen successfully defended himself against all the accusations of Blasphemy railed against him that hearing for the third time they were guilty of crucifying the Messiah, then while they were screaming and hollering in a feeble attempt to block out what Stephen was saying , and seeing Stephen looking steadfast into heaven and declaring he sees the Messiah standing at the right hand of Jehovah God, they grab him dragging him out of Jerusalem and stoned him outside the city. At the stoning, there was a young man named Saul, a Pharisee who witnessing the execution was in complete agreement with the killing of Stephen.
According to Luke, the writer of Acts, there was a great wave of persecution of the believers began that (same) day, sweeping over the church in Jerusalem, and everyone except the apostles fled into Judea and Samaria. Some godly Jews came and with great sorrow buried Stephen. Saul, behaving like a wild man, began going everywhere to fiercely persecuting the members of “The Way” determine to devastate every believer, both men and women. But the believers who were fortunate to flee Jerusalem to escape the fierce onslaught went everywhere preaching the Good News about Jesus Christ.

Saul: Chief Persecutor……To Damascus….To Conversion     (verses 1-9) And Saul, yet breathing out threatenings and slaughter against the disciples of the Lord, went unto the high priest, (vs. 1)

Points to remember about Saul of Tarsus::

Saul was greatly influenced by the events of Acts 7:58. The men who executed Stephen laid their “coats”, that is their "outer garments." at a young man’s feet named Saul. They asked him to take care of their garments. This is mentioned in verse 58 because Saul was immediately influenced by what he witnessed, both by the mob crowd and by the ”forgiveness” response of Stephen toward his attackers as he was dying afterward. Saul created so much havoc against the “Way”, he became much celebrated by the Sanhedrin and by all the Jews who saw Jesus as a false Messiah. His whole heart was in the persecution of Stephen; and he himself afterward would allude to this circumstance as an evidence of his sinfulness in persecuting the Lord Jesus by his persecution the Lord’s church.

Saul took persecuting of the church personally.
In chapter 8, Saul was enraged and bent on destroying this the first church. Paul would enter private homes, dragging out men and women alike and jailing them who confessed to be a part of the Way. Saul was so enraged that a new movement would dare try to come against the Law of Moses and the temple, he was determine to wipe them out wherever they were. He was driven to kill as many Christians he could, in fact, according to
Acts 26:10-11, Saul rejoiced in their death, took part in condemning them. And desired of him letters to Damascus to the synagogues, that if he found any of this way, whether they were men or women, he might bring them bound unto Jerusalem. (vs.2)

Saul used the political system (The Sanhedrin, mainly the influence of the Chief priest) to get warrants to cross jurisdictions to arrest them wherever they might be and bring them bound back to Jerusalem to be executed. The letters were written and signed in the name and by the authority of the Sanhedrin, or Great Council of the nation. The high priest did it as president of that council.
Note: The Sanhedrin made the claim that they were the authority over any synagogue in that region.

Saul’s  Encounter With Jesus and Conversion                (verses 3-9)
As he journeyed he came near Damascus, and suddenly a light shone around him from heaven. Then he fell to the ground, and heard a voice saying to him, "Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?" And he said, "Who are You, Lord?" Then the Lord said, "I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting.
* It is hard for you to kick against the goads." So he, trembling and astonished, said, "Lord, what do You want me to do?" Then the Lord said to him, "Arise and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do."

As Saul traveled to Damascus in search of Christians, suddenly the sky lights up and lightning strikes around him and the soldiers with him and according to Saul in Acts 26:12-19 they all fell to the ground. Jesus speaks to Saul…..

Jesus: Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?
Saul: Who are you Lord?
Jesus: I am Jesus, the one you’re persecuting. It is hard for you to kick against the pricks.        (vs.5)
Saul:  (Trembling and astounded) Lord, what would you have me to do?
Jesus: Get up, go into the city and you will be told what to do.  (vs. 6)

Reality check: The voice (Jesus) informed Saul that in persecuting the “Way”, (Christians), he had been persecuting HIM. As a result, his reason for going into Damascus was about to changed by Jesus.
The Lord Jesus made a personal appearance designed to take the work of converting such a persecutor into his own hands. Saul went to Damascus to arrest and persecute…Jesus met him on the road near there to arrest and convert Saul. Saul was converted in a natural way.

Jesus arrested his attention: A light shinned from heaven. Saul fell to the ground, hearing a voice speaking to him: Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me? Blinded and fully in attention to the voice of Jesus and then he presented the truth "I am Jesus of Nazareth,"

The effect this encounter had on Saul:

Saul was blind for 3 days, a very humbling experience.                (vs. 8-9)This encounter filled him with alarm at his guilt, Saul asked trembling and astonished, "Lord, what do You want me to do?"
Saul’s answer is the example of a subdued soul and a humbled spirit. Why?
  1. Before he encountered Jesus, he had sought only to do his own will; now, being humbled he asked Jesus “what do you want me to do?
  2. Before this encounter, Saul’s actions were sanctioned by commission from the Sanhedrin; no, this encounter caused him to renounced their authority and disassociate himself and asked what the Lord Jesus would have him to do.
  3. Saul‘s life assignment was changed from a being a fierce persecutor of the church to becoming the church’s strongest advocate.
Concerning the Conversion Experience:
The conversion experience is the process that a believer undergoes where there is a change in both heart and in mindset the very moment they accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. The “great controversy” between the potential covert and God is, after his or her conversion through Jesus Christ,
whose will shall be followed.

Remember: The sinner outside of a personal relationship with Jesus Christ follows his own, but the first act of the Christian convert is to surrender his own will to that of God, and to resolve to do all of what the Lord requires: "To do justly, to love mercy and to walk humbly before your God"

A New Life....A New Mission:

Saul went without food or drink during this time.Saul now arises eyes wide open but saw no man due to his blindness. The soldiers who traveled with him lead him by the hand into Damascus and does not eat for 3 days.

New Mission:            “A Chosen Vessel”                           (verses 10-16)
Saul still had to go into Damascus, knowing that his persecuting the church were “immediately” over and awaiting further instructions in Damascus.

4 Valuable Lessons for a New Convert:

It doesn’t matter how a person’s conversion experience comes about, outside of the immediate result of being saved.
Sometimes, you won’t know your God given life assignment immediately. That is, knowing what course of life should be followed, what should be done, or what should be believed beyond what you know at current. Sometimes, you will have to “tarry” and wait until God reveals it to you through an assign minister of another messenger of God.

For the new convert, the aid of others, and especially ministers, and  experienced Christians, is often very beneficial  to help any convert, even those who experienced being converted in the most remarkable manner.Saul was converted by a miracle; the Savior appeared to him in his glory; of the truth of his being Messiah Saul had no doubt; He did see Jesus, but still had new business in Damascus because he was dependent on an humble disciple in Damascus (Ananias) to be instructed in what he should do.

A newly converted person, regardless of how your experience came about through Christ should be willing to seek the counsel of those who are in the church before them. As miraculous as you actual encounter with Jesus Christ was, it doesn’t prevent you from gleaning valuable wisdom and knowledge or important directions and benefits from the elders, the experienced, and the wise in the Christian church.

A new convert who experiences an extraordinary conversion experience that miraculous in its inception will cause that convert to become humble; Their conversion experience causes them to recognize the depth and a deep sense of the gravity of their sin and unworthiness and began to fully appreciate the mercy God showed them while they were still living in sin. Now that they are saved and converted, they have a willingness to be taught and directed by anyone who can point out the way of duty and of life them in the right direction toward their God given mission in life.

Thus, it could be said about Saul that he went from a “preying” man to being a “praying” man.

Mission of Ananias: Go to “Straight” Street and ask for Saul of Tarsus praying at the house of Judas.                                     (vs. 11-12)
So the Lord said to him, "Arise and go to the street called Straight, and inquire at the house of Judas for one called Saul of Tarsus, for behold, he is praying. And in a vision he has seen a man named Ananias coming in and putting his hand on him, so that he might receive his sight."

The Apprehension of Annanias:                                                (vs. 13-16)
Then Ananias answered, "Lord, I have heard from many about this man, how much harm he has done to Your saints in Jerusalem. And here he has authority from the chief priests to bind all who call on Your name."
Reputations can cause fear and intimidation…or they can cause people to gladly open doors for you and assist you on your journey
But the Lord said to him, "Go, for he is a chosen vessel of Mine to bear My name before Gentiles, kings, and the children of Israel. For I will show him how many things he must suffer for My name's sake."
Go on to him:  2 reasons Ananias had to God see Saul:
  1. He’s My Chosen Vessel” To “bear’ (preach) to the Gentiles…to Kings…and to the Children of Israel…..
  2. I (Lord Jesus) will show him how he must suffer great things for my name sake.
Instead of expending his life in persecuting others, Saul must now expend it in being persecuted for that very preaching he once persecuted.

Important point to know: Persecution and suffering for the cause of Jesus Christ itself is proof of the reality of Christianity. WE are both suffering servants and victorious servants in Jesus Christ.

The Results of Obedience: Restoration...Baptism...Commission..

Saul’s Sight Restored, Baptized and Commissioned                           (vs. `17-19) And Ananias went his way and entered the house; and laying his hands on him he said, "Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus,* who appeared to you on the road as you came, has sent me that you may receive your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit

In obedience, Ananias goes into Simon’s house and lays hands on Saul so he would recover from his blindness, and be filled with the Holy Spirit.

Ananias confirmed that it was Jesus that Saul encountered on the Damascus Road.
.

" Immediately there fell from his eyes
something like scales, and he received his sight at once; and he arose and was baptized.  So when he had received food, he was strengthened. Then Saul spent some days with the disciples at Damascus.

(vs. 18-19)

The Lord immediately reversed the effects of the bright light ad restored Saul’s sight.

Note: Saul's conversion was a
“miracle” because the brightness of the light from Heaven (the Glory of God) damaged Saul’s optic nerve causing him to lose his vision. The Lord simply reverse it and healed him immediately so Saul would understand further that it was miraculous and as even the Pharisees believed, only God could heal.

There are 2 very important points we need to take away from Saul’s experience……..

This experience further undergirded Saul’s belief that Jesus is the Son of God and the Messiah.
Saul immediately got up and was baptized. This was the standard method after conversion for all the early Christian converts based on Acts 2:38-41. (vs. 18)

Saul was fed, having gone without food for 3 days and he regained his strength. (physically)

It also undergirds the importance of Ananias’s obedience. Ananias was sent to heal Saul and prep him for the powerful ministry the Lord drafted him for. We are sent to minister and to prepare others for future ministry by training them and showing in words and in our living around them a “more excellent way in Jesus Christ.

Saul remained in  Damascus with the disciples there for a certain period of time…..long enough to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ before he left Damascus, starting his evangelistic ministry in Arabia, coming back to Damascus, then after being gone from Jerusalem 3 years, returns there according to (Galatians 1:17)    (vs. 19)

What impact does Saul’s Conversion Experience have on the Church then and now…
Saul’s conversion to Christianity did not come about with the purpose of producing any financial gain to Saul. There are 3 reasons this is true:

In the time of Saul, most Christians were poor and needed help from the common missionary offerings taken up to help meet their daily needs.

To be a Christian in Saul’s lifetime meant the convert would be exposed to contempt, to persecution, and even to death.

It’s clear that Saul had no reason to assume or believe that he would escape the common lot of becoming a Christian.

Conclusion:

Saul’s conversion was genuine and sincere. He was as firmly opposed to Christianity before his conversion. His violent behavior against the church had already labeled him as an enemy of the faith and being hostile toward the new church (the WAY) and Christians in general.

It’s been said by Infidels that Christians are prejudiced in favor of their religion. But let’s closely examine Saul. Here was a man who at first was a bitter infidel, and a deadly enemy to Christianity. He was taught religious prejudice through his education, through all his prospects, through all his former views and feelings. Everything about Saul was opposed to the gospel of Christ and Christianity.

After his conversion, Saul became, however, one of its most firm advocates and friends, and it was for infidels he was once part of that turn on him just as viciously that proves the changes that came forth in him were genuine and real. There must have been some viable cause, some motive for the radical change in Saul; The only conclusion that you can logically come to is Saul was convinced in a most striking and wonderful manner of the truth of Christianity?

His subsequent life showed that the change was sincere and real. He encountered danger and persecution to evince his attachment to Christ everywhere he went. He went from land to land, and exposed himself to every peril and every form of persecution and scorn, yet always rejoicing that he was a Christian, and expressed gratefulness that he was permitted to suffer as a Christian, giving us the highest proofs of his sincerity. Think about it!  If such sufferings and such a life were not evidences of sincerity, then it would be impossible to fix on any circumstances of a man's life that would furnish proof that he was not a deceiver.

Since Paul was sincere, his conversion was genuine, it meant that he confirmed by embracing it that the Christian religion is true. Nothing and no one but the Lord God of heaven could produce this change. Therefore, the independent testimony of a man who was once a persecutor who was converted in a wonderful manner and having  his whole life, religious views, and feelings revolutionized, and all his subsequent career evincing the sincerity of his feelings and the reality of the change.

Saul is a man that once was an enemy; a man whose testimony cannot be impeached; a man who had no interested motives, and who was willing to stand forth anywhere, and avow his change of feeling and purpose. We adduce him as such a witness; and infidels are bound to dispose of his testimony, or to embrace the religion which he embraced.

Finally, the example of Saul does not stand alone. Hundreds and thousands of enemies; persecutors, and slanderers over the centuries have been changed. Every one of them (us included) have become a living witness of the power and truth of the Christian religion. The scoffer becomes reverent; the profane man learns to speak the praise of God; the sullen, the bitter foe of Christ becomes his friend, living and dying under the influence of his religion. Could better proof be asked that this religion is from God? Jesus calls us all for every walk of life. "Come unto me all you that labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest. Jesus is still calling to a world of people who are still in their sins and trespasses against HIM. won't you let go of the reins of your life and give your life to Jesus today?

Continuing Power in the Church
"And through the hands of the apostles many signs and wonders were done among the people. And they were all with one accord in Solomon's Porch. Yet none of the rest dared join them, but the people esteemed them highly. And believers were increasingly added to the Lord, multitudes of both men and women, so that they brought the sick out into the streets and laid them on beds and couches, that at least the shadow of Peter passing by might fall on some of them. Also a multitude gathered from the surrounding cities to Jerusalem, bringing sick people and those who were tormented by unclean spirits, and they were all healed".

Imprisoned Apostles Freed

"Then the high priest rose up, and all those who were with him (which is the sect of the Sadducees), and they were filled with indignation, and laid their hands on the apostles and put them in the common prison. But at night an angel of the Lord opened the prison doors and brought them out, and said, "Go, stand in the temple and speak to the people all the words of this life." And when they heard that, they entered the temple early in the morning and taught. But the high priest and those with him came and called the council together, with all the elders of the children of Israel, and sent to the prison to have them brought".

Apostles on Trial Again

"But when the officers came and did not find them in the prison, they returned and reported, saying, "Indeed we found the prison shut securely, and the guards standing outside* before the doors; but when we opened them, we found no one inside!" Now when the high priest,* the captain of the temple, and the chief priests heard these things, they wondered what the outcome would be. So one came and told them, saying,* "Look, the men whom you put in prison are standing in the temple and teaching the people!"

Then the captain went with the officers and brought them without violence, for they feared the people, lest they should be stoned. And when they had brought them, they set them before the council. And the high priest asked them, saying, "Did we not strictly command you not to teach in this name? And look, you have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine, and intend to bring this Man's blood on us!"  But Peter and the other apostles answered and said: "We ought to obey God rather than men. The God of our fathers raised up Jesus whom you murdered by hanging on a tree. Him God has exalted to His right hand to be Prince and Savior, to give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins. And we are His witnesses to these things, and so also is the Holy Spirit whom God has given to those who obey Him."

Gamaliel's Advice

"When they heard this, they were furious and plotted to kill them. Then one in the council stood up, a Pharisee named Gamaliel, a teacher of the law held in respect by all the people, and commanded them to put the apostles outside for a little while. And he said to them: "Men of Israel, take heed to yourselves what you intend to do regarding these men. For some time ago Theudas rose up, claiming to be somebody. A number of men, about four hundred, joined him. He was slain, and all who obeyed him were scattered and came to nothing. After this man, Judas of Galilee rose up in the days of the census, and drew away many people after him. He also perished, and all who obeyed him were dispersed. And now I say to you, keep away from these men and let them alone; for if this plan or this work is of men, it will come to nothing; but if it is of God, you cannot overthrow it  lest you even be found to fight against God."

And they agreed with him, and when they had called for the apostles and beaten them, they commanded that they should not speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go. So they departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for His* name. And daily in the temple, and in every house, they did not cease teaching and preaching Jesus as the Christ.
