2 Corinthians 5:1-9
For we know that if our earthly house, this tent, is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed with our habitation which is from heaven, if indeed, having been clothed, we shall not be found naked. For we who are in this tent groan, being burdened, not because we want to be unclothed, but further clothed, that mortality may be swallowed up by life. Now He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who also has given us the Spirit as a guarantee.
So we are always confident, knowing that while we are at home in the body we are absent from the Lord. For we walk by faith, not by sight. We are confident, yes, well pleased rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord.

NKJV

Introduction: The Right Attitude on the Mission Battlefield

In this text, Paul shares with all of us who are saved and engaged in the work of the gospel ministry reasons why he and those who co-labored with him on this missionary journey didn’t get weary or become fainthearted on the battlefield while actively carrying out their ministry work. When you read the history of their mission, and their "conclusive attitude" on the mission field in chapter 4, you come to realize that at some point along the way, it became obvious that Paul and the others engaged in this sacred missionary work realized that the purpose of soul salvation and the compelling of men and women, boys and girls to come out of the darkness of this world’s wilderness into God’s marvelous light and eternal kingdom was both sacred work and important work but also dangerous work.
In your "mind's eye", Listen to their collective attitudes as they described the feelings of the persecution they faced in evangelical ministry. because their attitude was a reflection of their belief that when their mission work was finished and the warfare they constantly faced was finally over, one day, they would go home to live with Jesus in their new glorified home. How did they feel about being constantly persecuted?

How they felt: "Warring but  Winning"

"We are troubled on every side, yet (we’re) not distressed; we are perplexed, but (we’re) not in despair; Persecuted, but (we’re) not forsaken; cast down, but (we’re) not destroyed;  Always bearing about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, so that the life of Jesus also might be made manifest in our body. For we which live are always delivered unto death for Jesus' sake, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our mortal flesh".

A Life and Death Experience:     For your sakes......

"So then death works in us, but life (works) in you. And we, having the same spirit of faith, according as it is written, I believed, and therefore I have spoken; we also believe, and therefore (we) speak. Knowing that he (that’s God) which raised up the Lord Jesus shall raise us up also by Jesus, and shall present us with you. For all things (everything we’re doing for the Lord) are for your sakes, that the abundant grace through the thanksgiving of many might redound to the glory of God".

They went on to say: For this cause (the cause of Christ) we faint not; but though our “outward man” perish, yet the “inward man” is renewed day by day.  For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, (and it) works for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory.  While we don’t look at the things which are seen, but (we look) at the things which are not seen: (the reason is) for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal"

As you can see, it was in the format of their hostile missionary experiences, the facetious lies told on them, the constant peril and many innuendos intimated about them, the stoning with rocks and thugnatious persecutions plastered upon them, the many times the words in Romans 8:36 in the spirit rang in their ears:reminding them it was “For HIS sake... (for the sake of Jesus) we are killed all the day long...we are counted as sheep for the slaughter”, but they with rallied with renewed voices, “but nay, in all of these things, we are more than conquerors through HIM (Jesus Christ) that loves us”. Then, each one of them saying with a loud resounding voice “I’m persuaded no matter what I face… no matter who I face, no matter how many times death come creeping in my room…I’m persuaded that nothing shall be able to separate me form the love of God which is in Christ Jesus.

Yes, there was no weariness in their voices. There was nothing fainthearted in the way they went aout doing the Lord's work. They spoke with bold voices of blessed assurance… that was fueled by the fact that Paul and the rest of them had a life changing encounter with Jesus, This was first and foremost and points to the origin of a changed life.

The Changed Life

It all starts with a life changing encounter with Jesus. Let me tell you something… you don’t really begin to really live until you encounter Jesus. Don't get fooled by the Devil.. Do You really think getting and staying drunk is living? You think chasing every man or every woman is living? You think shooting dope in your veins rather than putting pertinent knowledge in your brains is living? You actually think living the thug life and being in and out of penal lockup is living? You think chasing the Benjamin’s and always ending up busted is living? You think hanging out in the booth, in the back in the corner in the dark on the down low or on the low low is living?

You haven’t really lived yet until you encounter Jesus standing at the door of your heart knocking saying to you.
Look, I stand at the door and knock. If any man (anybody) will come and open the door…I will come in unto him and sup with him and they can sup with ME!  If you’re tired and broken hearted, Come unto me all you that labor and are heave laden and I’ll give you rest! Take my yoke upon you and learn of me for I am meek and lowly and you shall find rest for your soul. My yoke is easy and my burden is light! You haven’t lived until you fling open the door of your heart in let HIM in.

I believe somewhere during the tedious part of their Christian journey especially when the road got real rough, the going got tough and the hills got so hard to climb, Paul and the rest of them heard in the spirit the sound of Jesus’ encouraging words in the atmosphere “In this life you will have tribulation but be of good cheer I have overcome the world”! In the 1st verse of the text Paul makes a bold declaration concerning the future of our sanctified souls and the state of our earthly tabernacles. Listen to what he says: For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolve, this is not the end….we have a building of God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.

Break it down preacher

For we know, we have blessed assurance, we don’t have no doubt …we are fully confident in the faith concerning the eternal security of our souls and state of our formed dust bodies…..if our earthly house of this Tabernacle were dissolved….there is another tabernacle an eternal tabernacle not made by earthly material….it’s made by God and built to last for all eternity!

Here’s a Reality check:
When it comes to our bodies, our earthly tabernacle, it’s not a matter of if it dissolves….it’s a matter of when it will dissolve ….It's desolving a little at a time everyday! The many cemeteries crypts and urns all over the world are solid indicators that this earthly tabernacle is going to dissolve….God told Adam: “From dust thou art and from dust your tabernacle will return”!  And even if you and I are alive when Jesus splits the sky in the rapture and we’re changed from mortal to immortality in the moment , the twinkling of an eye rising up to meet the Lord in the air. Our bodies were still dissolving whenever it happens.

Groaning:

Verse 2  "In this earthly tabernacle we groan"

Sometimes we groan because of the constant physical and spiritual wear and tear inflicted on this body. Wear and tear on this tabernacle started with us from day one of birth outside the womb. In the natural progression of life, if we live long enough, our steps will get shorter. Some of us will deal with our visions getting dimmer. We fight off headaches and heartaches. Heart attacks and dealing with lack. Racism and Satanism. Air pollution and world-wide revolutions, Slanted politics and fever ticks.

Sometimes we cause many of the inflictions by the things we do to with and in our bodies. Many of us are over work and under rested. And by the time we reach the age of retirement the “re” in retirement seems like it can’t ever catch up with the “tired” part. Along with drug and alcohol and cigarette abuse, we place tremendous torque on joints and cartilage and sometimes push these bodies beyond their natural compactly by over using steroids.

At other times, in the spirit realm,, another reason we groan is because the devil and other demonic forces come against our relationship with Jesus Christ. We are sometimes inflicted with sickness and diseases waring in and on our physical bodies trying to knock us down, beat us down, burden us down with the cares of this world. Right now, this temporary body is housing for our eternal souls. This undergirds the fact that we have eternal souls. Now where our soul will spend eternity and what kind of new housing we will live in depends on who we live for and who we serve while we live in this rented space on earth. God has rented Adam, Eve and us earth space from formed dust. God breathed into the nostrils of formed dust Adam fashioned in the shape of man and man then became a living soul.

Tabernacles- Really?

Paul calls our frail bodies "tabernacles" because we are designed and required to serve the Lord in these frail bodies, exclusively dedicated unto the Lord.. The Bible says: "Present these bodies (tabernacles) as living sacrifices wholly and acceptable unto God for it’s our reasonable service. Don’t conform your tabernacle to the way of the world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind that you may prove that good, and acceptable perfect will of God"

Brothers and sisters, we must change the way we use this tabernacle because it was set apart for the service of God; This means we must stop using them for the world’s  use and allow the Holy Spirit to use our tabernacle for the WORD’s use. Here’s another way of saying it: When you offered yourself to Jesus, you got to release all claim on it, and submitted it totally to God, to be at His disposal for doing his will. We are not our own. We have been bought with a tremendous price. Bought and paid for by the precious blood of Jesus Christ. Which leads me to the third point:

This Earth is not our Eternal Home.

We are time travelers on a mission and on a journey. Jesus said to the believer, "I’m going to prepare a place for you". That place is not here! This is just a dressing up room down here. You got to go to heaven from down here. All who are designed for heaven hereafter are wrought or prepared for heaven while they are here. The stones of that spiritual building and temple above are squared and fashioned here in this body.  The same God that made us, is the same God, through Jesus Christ, and sealing us with the Holy Ghost molding us, changing us, pruning us and has wrought a good work in us that we will conform to the image of Jesus Christ to such an extent that when our missionary work is finished God moves us out of this temporary housing and gives us permanent residence in heaven.

Jesus said in that same 14th chapter of John "I’ve got to go away in expediency. It’s expedient that I go away but when I go, I won’t leave you without comfort I’ll send you another comforter. That is the Holy Ghost and when the Holy Ghost comes, he will guide you into all truths concerning ME"

T
he Holy Ghost will prep you for your new home. He does this for everybody who wants to go to their heavenly home to live with Jesus. Nothing less but God’s intrinsic divine power can make a man’s soul a partaker of God’s own divine nature;. God does a great deal and goes to great lengths to prepare our souls for heaven, and all that preparation starts with God giving you a new heart and His Holy Spirit through Jesus Christ. But what is our current state in relation with the Lord?

Our Present State:

This is our present state: We are absent from the Lord because we are present in this body.  It’s a paradox. We are pilgrims and strangers in this world; We are sojourning here in our earthly home, in this tabernacle; and even though God is with us here, by his Spirit, and in his ordinances, we are not with him as we hope to be: we cannot see his face while we live: In order to see him face to face as He is, we have to give up this life.

In the mean time, we must walk by faith, not by sight, Faith is for this world, and sight is reserved for the new heavenly world: It is our duty, and in our best interest, to walk by faith, until the day we can walk and live by our sight. Faith teaches us how to find comfort and courage while we run this race. If we hold on to God’s unchanging hand He will give us toe comfort and give us the courage t to handle all trials and tribulations of this life. Not only that but when the day come when we must depart this life, He will give us comfort and courage in the hour of death: for that reason either we are or we ought to be always confident and always willing rather to be absent from the body and be present with the Lord.

Conclusion....

My brothers and sisters, if you are really a true Christian, if you really considered the prospect faith gives us of our new home over in the glory land ….in another world that’s far greater and far better than the best this world has to offer, it ought to give us all good reasons of that blessed hope that blessed assurance that Jesus is mine…

A songwriter once penned these words:
Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine...Oh what a for taste of glory divine... Heir of salvation purchased by God….born of HIS Spirit….washed in HIS blood…This is my story...this is my song...Praising my Savior... all the day long...

I don’t know how you feel about it when I get through praying down here, preaching down here, singing down here teaching down here living down her out in the sunshine …out in the rain….I’m going home to my other building the one God made with HIS hands to be with Jesus Won’t it be grand. When it comes your time to die, just remember that all we have and the best we have on this side is just a fortaste of glory divine, and a world that’s full of trouble.  be comforted under the troubles of life, and supported in the hour of death: they should take courage, when you encounter death, your last enemy, and God says it’s time to come on home….go on and be willing rather to die than live, when it is the will of God that they should put off this earthly tabernacle.

Esther 1:1-21: "The Banishing of a Queen"

" Now it came to pass in the days of Ahasuerus (this was the Ahasuerus who reigned over one hundred and twenty-seven provinces, from India to Ethiopia), in those days when King Ahasuerus sat on the throne of his kingdom, which was in Shushan the citadel, that in the third year of his reign he made a feast for all his officials and servants — the powers of Persia and Media, the nobles, and the princes of the provinces being before him when he showed the riches of his glorious kingdom and the splendor of his excellent majesty for many days, one hundred and eighty days in all."

"And when these days were completed, the king made a feast lasting seven days for all the people who were present in Shushan the citadel, from great to small, in the court of the garden of the king's palace. There were white and blue linen curtains fastened with cords of fine linen and purple on silver rods and marble pillars; and the couches were of gold and silver on a mosaic pavement of alabaster, turquoise, and white and black marble. And they served drinks in golden vessels, each vessel being different from the other, with royal wine in abundance according to the generosity of the king. In accordance with the law, the drinking was not compulsory; for so the king had ordered all the officers of his household, that they should do according to each man's pleasure."

Introduction: Profiling "Vashti"
According to the
Fausset's Bible Dictionary:
Vashti is the Queen of Ahasuerus or Xerxes (Esther chapter 1 and  2). who refused to appear at the king's command, to exhibit her beauty before the king's guests at a banquet; was therefore deposed and repudiated lest a precedent should be given for insubordination of wives to husbands. Vashti may answer to Amestris the queen consort throughout Xerxes' reign, and queen mother under his son and successor-Artaxerxes. it was when his "heart was merry with wine" that he sent for Vashti as a concubine; but she, looking on herself as a legitimate wife, would not come.
Esther chapter 5:4,8,12, shows that it was no impropriety for wives to be at banquets in front of other men (besides their husbands).

A Little Bit about Mordecai:

Mordecai held a position among the lower officials of the royal palace  This epic event takes place in the " Return Stage"  of  Israel returning from  the 70 years of captivity YAHWEH IMPOSED UPON THEM prophesied by Jeremiah in Jeremiah 29:10. For whatever the reason, her family was one of the many that chose to stay in Persia rather than accept the edict by Cyrus the Great that freed all Jews and permitting them to leave Persia and return to Jerusalem to rebuild the city  and repair the walls and gates and their lives. Cyrus even financed their exodus .

A Little Bit About Esther: The woman who ultimately replaced Vashti as Queen

Esther's persona in the Bible projects her as a "woman" of deep piety, faith, courage, patriotism, and caution, all combined with her resolution to "lay" her life on the line for safety of her people. She was a dutiful daughter to her adopted father Mordecai, docile and obedient to his counsels, and anxious to share the king's favor with him for the good of the Jewish people. There must have been a singular grace and charm in her aspect and manners, since "she obtained favor in the sight of all them that looked upon her" (Esther 2:15). That she was raised up as an instrument in the hand of God to avert the destruction of the Jewish people, and to afford them protection and forward their wealth and peace in their captivity,

The Storyline occurs in the time of the Med-Persian Empire in the backdrop of a 180 day festival hosted by the King of Persia Ahasuerus in celebration of 'his" splendor and that of the conquering empire. Ahasuerus is concluding the half year festivities with an additional week  public celebration  as he prepares to go to war with Greece. The king was feeling "uninhibited, because he had been drinking wine all throughout the celebrations..

Public Display: "A Queen's Refusal"

"Queen Vashti also made a feast for the women in the royal palace which belonged to King Ahasuerus. On the seventh day, when the heart of the king was merry with wine, he commanded Mehuman, Biztha, Harbona, Bigtha, Abagtha, Zethar, and Carcas, seven eunuchs who served in the presence of King Ahasuerus, to bring Queen Vashti before the king, wearing her royal crown, in order to show her beauty to the people and the officials, for she was beautiful to behold. But Queen Vashti refused to come at the king's command brought by his eunuchs; therefore the king was furious, and his anger burned within him."

A Royal Decision: What to do About Vashti?

"Then the king said to the wise men who understood the times (for this was the king's manner toward all who knew law and justice, those closest to him being Carshena, Shethar, Admatha, Tarshish, Meres, Marsena, and Memucan, the seven princes of Persia and Media, who had access to the king's presence, and who ranked highest in the kingdom): "What shall we do to Queen Vashti, according to law, because she did not obey the command of King Ahasuerus brought to her by the eunuchs?"

And Memucan answered before the king and the princes: "Queen Vashti has not only wronged the king, but also all the princes, and all the people who are in all the provinces of King Ahasuerus. For the queen's behavior will become known to all women, so that they will despise their husbands in their eyes, when they report, 'King Ahasuerus commanded Queen Vashti to be brought in before him, but she did not come. 'This very day the noble ladies of Persia and Media will say to all the king's officials that they have heard of the behavior of the queen. Thus there will be excessive contempt and wrath the counsel feared a women's movement, and public and private anarchaic rebellion in their households, and in the kingdom.

Counsel's Recommendation:  Dethrone Her and let her appear before the King no more!
If it pleases the king, let a royal decree go out from him, and let it be recorded in the laws of the Persians and the Medes, so that it will not be altered, that Vashti shall come no more before King Ahasuerus; and let the king give her royal position to another who is better than she. When the king's decree which he will make is proclaimed throughout all his empire (for it is great), all wives will honor their husbands, both great and small."

"And the reply pleased the king and the princes, and the king did according to the word of Memucan. Then he sent letters to all the king's provinces, to each province in its own script, and to every people in their own language, that each man should be master in his own house, and speak in the language of his own people". (NKJV)

Apparently the men felt so threatened by Vashti's public refusal to the king that they felt the need for the king to denounce her actions and have her dethroned. Not only that, they coaxed the king to also make a public and signed edict declaring all men head of their households and heir wives completely subjective to them in every way. IN searching the Matthew Henry  Commentary, I found an interesting commentary concerning what Vashti did and the effect it had in the Persian Empire:

"The proposal which Memucan made, that Vashti should be divorced for her disobedience. Some suggest that he gave this severe advice, and the rest agreed to it, because they knew it would please the king, and would gratify both his passion now and his appetite afterwards".

The Jewish Historian Josephus voiced an somewhat different opinion to the contrary.

According to Josephus,  Ahasuerus had a strong affection for Vashti, and would not have put her away for this offence if he could have legally have avoided it; and then we must suppose Memucan, in the advice he gave, other than for political reasons had a sincere regard to see justice done for the public good. Memucan's real reason for his advice was the potential consequence of the queen's disobedience to her husband, if left overlooked, passed by and not adverted would embolden other wives both to disobey their husbands and attempt to exert dominance over them. In essence, tne men of the kingdom feared losing control over their houses because their wives would rebel against them.

Had this unhappy public falling out between the king and his wife been private and remained that way, this schism would have remained with the two of them and the quarrel might have been easily settled privately between them. BUT it happened in the public, and perhaps it is likely the ladies, or some of them that were feasting with the queen agreed with her public refusal, her rebellion would likely have a bad influence upon many if not all the Persian women in the kingdom. If the queen must have her humor, and the king must submit to it (since the houses of private persons commonly take their measures from the courts of princes), the wives would be haughty and imperious and would refuse to obey their husbands, and the poor despised husbands feared this, but couldn't help themselves; for the contentions of a wife are a continual dropping. (Proverbs 19:13) In other words, the husbands and wives will constantly be at odds with each other.

In Proverbs 27:15-16, Solomon put it this way:
a quarrelsome wife is like a constant dripping on a rainy day; restraining her is like restraining the wind or grasping oil with the hand".

When wives despise the very husbands they ought to reverence, there is rarely peace in the house and there is constant contention for dominion over their spouses. The Apostle Paul gives us God's formula for a happy home and a even more happy Church in Ephesians 5: 22-33:

"Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is head of the wife, as also Christ is head of the church; and He is the Savior of the body. Therefore, just as the church is subject to Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in everything. Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her, that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word,  that He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish. So husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies; he who loves his wife loves himself. For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as the Lord does the church. For we are members of His body, of His flesh and of His bones. "For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh." This is a great mystery, but I speak concerning Christ and the church. Nevertheless let each one of you in particular so love his own wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband".
NKJV

A question of ponderance: Was Vashti right for refusing to parade herself before a drunken celebration of Persian men?

Had Vashti complied with the King, she would have had to parade herself naked before these men. Persia was in this time of history a rough, barbaric cruel and crude empire. Unfortunately for the dethroned queen, the celebration was kingdom wide and because the king hosted it, everything the king ordered or asked was under kingdom protocol. She broke kingdom protocol when she refused to come before the king and he drunken court. Had Persia been a country that promoted prevailing moral and social decency, she could have and should have refused.......

Because of Persian protocal.....

Memucan conveyed what would be the good consequence of a kingdom decree against Vashti that she should be divorced by the king. We may suppose that before they proceeded to this extremity, they sent to Vashti to find out if she would yet submit, that is, cry "Peccavi"—I have done wrong, and ask the king's pardon, and that, if she had done so, the mischief of her example would have been effectually prevented, and process would have been stayed; but it is obvious she continued to be obstinate, and insisted upon it as her prerogative to do as she pleased, whether it pleased the king or not, and therefore they gave this judgment against her, that she come no more before the king, and this judgment so ratified as never to be reversed, v. 19.

The consequence of this, it was hoped, would be that the wives would give to their husbands honor, even the wives of the great, notwithstanding their own greatness, and the wives of the small, notwithstanding the husband's meanness (v. 20); and thus every man would bear rule in his own house, as he ought to do, and, the wives being subject, the children and servants would be so too. It is the interest of states and kingdoms to provide that good order be kept in private families.

The edict that passed according to this proposal, signifying that the queen was divorced for contumacy, according to the law, and that, if other wives were in like manner undutiful to their husbands, they must expect to be in like manner disgraced (v. 21,22): were they better than the queen? Whether it was the passion or the policy of the king that was served by this edict, God's providence served its own purpose by it, which was to make way for Esther to the crown.

The Queen Banished

Burning with anger and acting upon the advice of his cronies advisors, Ahasuerus (Xerses) banishes his wife Vashti from his presence forever, a move that was to serve as a warning to any of the women in the kingdom that might follow the example of Vashti and become insubordinate their homes Memucan also persuaded the king to make this a public proclamation kingdom wide..

Esther 1:20-22
"When the king's decree which he will make is proclaimed throughout all his empire (for it is great), all wives will honor their husbands, both great and small."And the reply pleased the king and the princes, and the king did according to the word of Memucan. Then he sent letters to all the king's provinces, to each province in its own script, and to every people in their own language, that each man should be master in his own house, and speak in the language of his own people".   NKJV

The Prevaiding Moral of this Passage........Some laws and proclamations prove to be meaningless!

Both God's law and common sense taught this from the foundation of the world. And is it possible that this did not obtain in the Persian empire, previously to this edict?

Esther 1:20 has another clause, That all wives shall give to their husbands honour, both to great and small. This decree was universally understood. This law in reality did nothing.

I suppose the reeal motive of this edict enactment was only made to deprive "honest" Vashti of her crown. In truth, it was to convey "That each woman should speak the language of her husband." If she were even a foreigner, she should be obliged to learn and speak the language of the king. Perhaps maybe there might be some degree of common sense in this, because it would oblige the foreigner to devote much time to study and improvement; and, consequently, to make her a better woman, and a better wife. Who knows if this was part of the purpose for coming up with a decree like this. There seems to be no proof that this was a part of the decree.

1 Peter 5:1- 14  " Feeding  the Flock of God"

"The elders who are among you I exhort, I who am a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that will be revealed: Shepherd the flock of God which is among you, serving as overseers, not by compulsion but willingly, not for dishonest gain but eagerly; nor as being lords over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock; and when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that does not fade away."

Submit to God, Resist the Devil.

"Likewise you younger people, submit yourselves to your elders. Yes, all of you be submissive to one another, and be clothed with humility, for "God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble." Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you. Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world. But may the God of all grace, who called us to His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a while, perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle you.. To Him be the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen".

Farewell and Peace

By Silvanus, our faithful brother as I consider him, I have written to you briefly, exhorting and testifying that this is the true grace of God in which you stand. She who is in Babylon, elect together with you, greets you; and so does Mark my son.Greet one another with a kiss of love. Peace to you all who are in Christ Jesus. Amen.   (NKJV)

Introduction:
This Epistle was written by the Apostle Peter to encourage all believers to stand true to their relationship in Jesus Christ and to remain true to the faith even though they were to experience all kinds of fierce trials and persecution by those Judaizers who denied the faith, unbelievers and those who saw the new church as a threat to their raunchy debased lives. The Apostle said they were to set forth the "true grace" of God.

Identifying With Fellow Elders

The elders whom Peter eluded to were senior members of the faith and ministers of the gospel. who were responsible for their flock. These aged men in particular who being mature in the faith were being exhorted by Peter to make full proof of their ministries by "feeding the flock of God" without pretense. In addressing these pastors and ministers, Peter in the 1st  two verses first identifies with them." I who am a fellow elder and a witness".

The Apostle Peter in this verse both gives exhortation and identifies with the elders bay calling himself a "co-presbyter" with them; rather than use his apostolic position as leverage to get an audience with them. He makes this one of the grounds of his exhortation to them. He does not put it on the ground of his apostolic authority; urges it because he was the vicegerent of Christ; because he was the head of the church; or because he had any pre-eminence over others in any way.

Then as a witness....
Even though it can be accurately said Peter for a short period of time was a witness who denied Jesus for fear of his life, Peter was truly an
eye-witness to Christ's sufferings; Because Jesus gave Peter another chance and Peter obviously repented at some point, Jesus told Peter that after his sifting and  conversion, his assignment would be to strengthen the brethren, to exhort them to serving  in their perspective ministries with godly integrity and for the  glory of God and not for selfish gain of any kind..

During Jesus earthly ministry:

Peter was privileged to both walk with Jesus when he was on earth. He was called by Jesus to become a "fisher of men". During Jesus' 3 year ministry on earth, he  observed Jesus  witnessing, teaching, preaching and healing, casting out demons and delivering men, women, boys and girls who were spiritually bound by demonic forces. Not only this, on one occasion,  Peter was with James and John  when Jesus "transfigured" into His glorified body and appeared  in the sky talking with with Elijah and Moses.

He was with Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane. He was with him when he was arrested by Herod's soldiers and after the rest of his close disciples scattered from Gethsemane, he warmed himself by an open fire in the high priest's hall. Whether he followed him to the cross we don't know. In all likelihood  he didn't, because it was in the hall of the high priest that he had denied him 3 times most shamefully; and, having been deeply convicted of the greatness of his crime, it is likely he withdrew to some private place, to humble himself before God, and to implore mercy. He could, however, with the strictest propriety, say, from the above circumstances, that he was a witness of the sufferings of Christ. and thirdly....

As a "partaker" of the glory of God
He had a right to it through the blood of the Lamb. Peter as well as all of us had a blessed anticipation of the glory of God by the power of the Holy Spirit; and he had the promise from his Lord and Master that he should be with him in heaven, to behold his glory; (John 17:22,24).

Shepherd the flock of God:         "Feed Them Jesus"
Peter exhorted his fellow ministers of the faith to have godly integrity in their ministry as well as their ministering to God's people. He compels them to "feed the flock of God" which is among them, serving in the capacity of overseers, pastors, teachers, etc.. not by compulsion but willingly, not for dishonest gain but eagerly; nor as being lords over those entrusted to you, but being living examples to the flock; and when the Chief Shepherd appears, these elders and overseers will receive the "crown of glory" that does not fade away".

The Phrase "Feed the flock of God" echoes the same mandate the Apostle Paul told Timothy in 2 Timothy 4:2-5:

"Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables.  But you be watchful in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry". (NKJV)

Peter was saying if you have been truly called by Jehovah to the gospel ministry, make sure you preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Don't go about doing your duty as if you felt that a heavy yoke was imposed on you, or a burden from which you would gladly be discharged from doing. No, go cheerfully doing your duty as a work which you love, As arduous as the labors of the ministry are, there is no work on this earth that a man can and should labor more joyfully and enthusiasm. Because you are overseers, make sure you keep careful watch over God's flock (the believers of faith), not just because you have been called to do it but because you desire to do it.

Peter instructed them not to act as "lords" over the people of God because to do so would be an act of usurping God's authority over the flock that truly belongs to Him.
. The Church, as one whole, is God's heritage or flock.. A pastor may have leadership over a local church body, but never has lordship. The local church assembly is but a microcosm of the body of Christ that's been called out by accepting the gospel of Jesus Christ to salvation, consecration and then to evangelism.
.
Don't "fleece" the flock, that is don't take advantage of your position and influence God has given you and use it to take advantage of them for selfish gain. (filthy lucre) Rather, have holy enthusiasm concerning their welfare and spiritual well being. As a child of God and a minister to the mission field, you must walk in godly integrity and be a living example of what it means to be led by the Holy Spirit in your daily living. You must practice what you preach and let your life line up with what you say with your lips. Jesus said: The harvest is great but the laborers are so few.

Character and Conduct: Submit to God....Resist the Devil

To have a ministry that's pleasing to God, Peter told all  the key was based on 2 words: submission and resistance. First everyone had to submit to God. This meant they had to allow God's will to be done in their lives.
Jesus in Matthew 26: 38 submitted to the will of the Father and said "Nevertheless, let not my will, but your will ( the Father) be done"
. You have to commit your way to the Lord and give absolutely no place to the devil.. Peter in the next few verses turns his attention to the younger ministers in the faith. Look what he says to them:

Then submit to each other: According to Age and Positions of Ministry.....

Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resist the proud, and giveth grace to the humble.

Every minister, missionary and teacher should have mutual respect for each other and operate in a spirit of co-operation. We are collective evangelistic team. To be a force on the evangelism field,  Peter here exhort that the elders and younger to hold true to the callings God place upon each of them and never allow the devil to make them see each other as threats or enemies. And for those who aren't in a viable leadership position must give respect to those who have a responsibility to lead them as they are led by Jesus Christ. Strive all to serve each other; let the pastors strive to serve the people, and the people care for their pastors; and let there be no contention, but who shall do most to oblige and profit all the rest. This is similar to what the Apostle Paul said to the Philippian church in Philippians 2:3:

"Let nothing be done through strife, that is with a spirit of contention".

This command forbids us to do anything, or attempt anything that is the outcry of strife between factions in the Christian faith. As followers of Jesus Christ "strife" is not a principle from which we are to act out in character or by which we are to be governed. We are to walk out our soul salvation with fear and trembling. We are not to form any schemes and aim at no objective which is to be secured by strife. God's word prohibits all attempts of a child of God to secure anything over others by brute strength, superiority of intellect or numbers neither as the result of dark schemes and evil plans formed by rivalries, the indulgence of angry passions, or with the spirit of ambition. We are not to attempt to do anything merely by outstripping others, or by bragging that we have more talent, courage, or zeal. Whatever we do is to be by godly principle, and with a desire to maintain the truth, with our sole aim being to glorify God. And yet how often is this rule violated!

Be clothed on humility....

The elders were to be willing to take any place of service, and perform any office of duty however humble (level of importance), in order to serve and benefit others. They were not to assume a style and dignity (posture) of state and authority, as if they would lord it over others, or as if they were better than others; but they were to be willing to occupy any station, however humble, (low in stature and status) by which they might honor God.

It is noteworthy to mention this is not  to imply that a few of the early Christians actually sold themselves as slaves, in order that they might preach the gospel to those who were in bondage. The sense here is, they were to put on humility as a garment bound fast to them, as a servant bound fast to him the apron that was significant of his station. (compare Colossians 3:13).

For God resist the proud …..Peter quotes this verse from in Proverbs 3:34.
"The Lord's curse is on the house of the wicked, but he blesses the home of the righteous. He  Apostle James also quoted the same verse  (James 2:2) saying "proud mockers" but gives grace to the humble". (NIV)

The  Apostle James 4:6, where it is also quoted Proverbs 3:33-34

["But he giveth more grace] The reference here is undoubtedly to God. Some scholars have regarded this clause as a continuation of the quotation in the previous verse, but it is rather to be considered as a declaration of the apostle himself. James had just spoken of envy, and of the crimes which grew out of it. He thought of the wars and commotions of the earth, and of the various lusts which reigned among men. In the contemplation of these things, it seems suddenly to have occurred to him that everybody was not under the influence of these things; that there were cases where  some men were restrained, and a spirit in opposition was present in some and to these things prevailed"
.
Another passage of Scripture struck his mind, containing the truth that there was a class of men to whom God gave grace to restrain these passions, and to subdue these carnal propensities. They were the humble, in contrast to the proud; and he states the fact that "God giveth more grace;" that is, that in some instances he confers more grace than in the cases referred to; to some he gives more grace to overcome their evil passions, and to subdue their corrupt inclinations, than he does to others. The meaning may be thus expressed: - "It is true that the natural spirit in man is one that tends to envy, and thus leads to all the sad consequences of envy. But there are instances in which higher grace or favor is conferred; in which these feelings are subdued, and these consequences are prevented. They are not indeed to be found among the proud, whom God always resists; but they are to be found among the meek and the humble. Wherefore submit yourselves to his arrangements; resist the devil; draw nigh to God; purify yourselves, and weep over your past offences, and you shall find that the Lord will lift you up, and bestow his favor upon you,"

The "Key" to Being Exalted              (In "Due Season")

Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time: (1 Peter 5:6) (NKJV)

Here the underlining message Peter conveys to the elders and other leaders is leaders (young and old)  and elders must be willing (if need be) to take a place-or position that may not be a place of exaltation or prominence (what we call "in the lime light").
Sometimes, we must willingly take an "humble" place, a place of obscurity, such as becomes you. It's not wise to become arrogant and arrogate (that is assign or seek) for yourselves a position or authority that does not belong to you. Don't display an attitude (spirit) of pride and haughtiness in your manners.

It's never good to exalt yourselves above others In the ministry or in life in general regardless of your state or status position wise. You are no better than the person with greater responsibility. You may be better off,  socially of financially, but you are no better! If is wasn't for the grace of God, you could be  in the same position the person you think you are better than is. God is no respecter of persons and the one thing that grieves the Holy Spirit is pride. It's one of 7 things God hated in a person. Satan's downfall happened when he made 5 pride filled statements (in his heart) in Isaiah 14:12-14.

The Mighty Hand of God           "God's Intrinsic Authority"

Whatever we are able to do of whatever authority we have, the authority we have is "derived", which means it's authority that is given on a temporary basis and can be taken back by the giver at any time. Peter conveyed to the leaders in his day that there was no greater authority than the sovereign authority of Jehovah. Any work that was to be done for the sake of evangelism and pastoral in nature had to be done God's way and under His banner. God can and will humble the proud and arrogant

Peter makes it quite clear that God hand of power was upon them  and it's only by the hand of God that they would accomplish anything for the kingdom, even for themselves. Concerning the phrase "under the mighty hand of God"  one theologian makes this following observation:

"
This refers probably to the calamities which he (God) either had brought upon them, or was about to bring upon them; represented here, as often elsewhere in other biblical passages, as the infliction of his hand, the hand being that by which we accomplish anything. When that hand (God's) was upon them they were not to be lifted up with pride and with a spirit of rebellion, but were to take a lowly place before him, and submit to him with a calm mind, believing that he would exalt them in due time".

I can't think of any situation in which anyone will be more likely to feel humility  or become humbled than in times of affliction" and fierce persecution. God allows times of affliction and persecution to befall a prideful person that He may exalt you in due time. That is, when he determines it to be a proper time: So what are the assurances a leader of any child of God can have in God elevating them?

1) They can be assured that God has an appointed time for major changes in the life of a believer. "The steps of a good man are ordered by God".....(Psalms 37:23-24) NKJV

Peter wanted them to  know God would not always leave them in a low and depressed condition. He would take off his heavy hand, and raise them up from their state of sadness and suffering to joy and freedom.

(2) Elevation would be in due time; that is, in the proper time, in the best time:
I
n layman's terms, it could happen immediately or somewhere in their lifetime when it is "due season", or certainly it'll happen in the world to come. On the new earth, there they would be exalted to honors which will be more than an equivalent for all the persecution, poverty, and contempt which are suffered in this world. He may well afford to be humble here who is to be exalted to a throne in heaven. The cross you bear here if you endure to the end will yield you a crown in eternity.

Conclusion:                             Food for Thought.....

How often do Christian denominations attempt to outstrip each other; slamming each other with vicious criticism, becoming publicly competitive with one another just to see which one of us will be labeled by the masses a successful ministry or the greatest minister in our field of ministry. How often do a lot of ministers preach with no better aim that to attempt to "show up" or intimidate younger less experienced ministers How often do we attempt to out do others in dress, and in the splendor of furniture and equipment that furnishes the church or worship centers we hold services in? How often, even in plans of benevolence, and in the case of virtue and religion, is the secret aim to out do others. This is all wrong. There is no act of holiness in such efforts and in no way does this glorifies God.. Never once did Jesus, our Redeemer act with such a motive, and never once should this motive be allowed to influence us. The conduct of others may be allowed to show us what we can do, and ought to do;  even what not to do, but it should never be our aim to outstrip them. Like Paul said some preached with pretense, some with the purpose of strive, that is to increase the bonds or burdens on another, and some preached in truth. Which one are you?

Luke 10:1-13
After these things the Lord appointed seventy others also, and sent them two by two before His face into every city and place where He Himself was about to go.Then He said to them, "The harvest truly is great, but the laborers are few; therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest Go your way; behold, I send you out as lambs among wolves .Carry neither money bag, knapsack, nor sandals; and greet no one along the road. But whatever house you enter, first say, 'Peace to this house. And if a son of peace is there, your peace will rest on it; if not, it will return to you. And remain in the same house, eating and drinking such things as they give, for the laborer is worthy of his wages. Do not go from house to house.Whatever city you enter, and they receive you, eat such things as are set before you.And heal the sick there, and say to them, 'The kingdom of God has come near to you.'But whatever city you enter, and they do not receive you, go out into its streets and say,The very dust of your city which clings to us we wipe off against you. Nevertheless know this, that the kingdom of God has come near you.'  But I say to you that it will be more tolerable in that Day for Sodom than for that city.
NKJV

Concerning the number "70"

The number "seventy" was a favorite and prominent number in the lifestyle affairs among the Jews. In the bible, you will find many scriptures that speak concerning this number and the significant role the number has played in the history of the Hebrew culture. Here are a few examples: In Genesis 46:27, The number of people in the family of Jacob that came to Egypt and lived in the land o Goshen after being driven from their homeland in the midst of a 7 year drought that caused famine across the land consisted of 70 people.

In Numbers 11:16, verse 25, the number of elders that Moses appointed to aid him was seventy..  In the book of Jeremiah, God told Jeremiah to tell the people because of their idolatry and out right rebellion they would be captured by the Babylonians and remain in captivity for 70 years. The number of members which composed the great Sanhedrin Council, also known as the Great Council of the Nation was also 70..Jesus, in answering the question of how many times must we forgive our brother (fellow man) said that we must forgive them seventy times seven

Concerning These 70 disciples

Along with the twelve disciples in which eleven of the original after Pentecost ultimately became Apostles, these men help make up 82 men, preachers and healers who Jesus endowed with the Holy Spirit. These 70 disciples were sent out by Jesus for a different reason than he sent out the twelve, even though they virtually did the same type work.. These 70 were sent out into cities and places Jesus had not visited as of yet.  Their job along with preaching and healing the sick was to announce that the Kingdom of God was at hand and the Messiah was soon to come to their city.

The apostles did evangelistic work, both with Jesus while they were sitting under His teachings and instructions and after Jesus went to Calvary and after His resurrection and ascended back into glory, these apostles were to carry out the establishing of physical churches all throughout the region through the preaching and teaching of the Gospel.

In chapter 9, Jesus sent out the twelve to evangelize the city. He sent out on two by two equipped with power and authority over all demons and the anointing to cure diseases. He told them to preach the kingdom of God and to heal the sick. When Jesus sent them out, He sent them in teams of 2’s in teams of 2. They were told to take nothing extra on their journey and wherever they lodged in the city, stay there until it was time to go to another town. And if they don’t receive you, shake the dust off your feet and go on to the next city. And as they went through each town, there was preaching and healing everywhere they went. . Jesus lets us know here that wherever the Word of God goes forth in power and in the glory of the Lord, truth preaching takes place and healing will follow.

As His original disciples, the twelve heard his instructions. They were eye-witnesses of his miracles; they were privy to his confrontations with the Pharisees, Sadducees, and the Scribes, as well as His brutal suffering after praying in the Garden of Gethsemane.  By the time Jesus was nailed to the cross to be crucified, Judas had betrayed Him, Peter had denied Him and all went into hiding or went back fishing but John. John the Apostle stayed at the cross and witnessed His death, Jesus appeared to them after his resurrection and  before he ascended back to heaven on a cloud gave them their  final instructions before He went away on a cloud. Jesus told them to tarry in Jerusalem and wait for the receiving of the Holy Spirit . In Acts 1:8, He said they would receive power after the Holy Ghost come upon them and after this happened, they would be witnesses unto Him in Jerusalem, Judaea, Samaria and the uttermost parts of the world.

All of this they would do. So after he died, after He was buried in the borrowed tomb, after He rose in 3 days and after He ascended into the clouds, and after they tarried into Jerusalem in the upper room and waited to receive power when the Holy Ghost came upon them some 45 days later…These trained Apostles "then" would go out as a great evangelistic team and  do the "greater works" of proclaiming the Gospel , healing the sick and sharing the good news and testifying to everything they saw, all that they heard and experienced while they were with Jesus to a sin-sick dying world being empowered and armed with the whole armor of God. They would be able to say one day this same Jesus that we saw resurrected, alive and went up into the clouds will one day in like manner come bursting through the clouds as King of King and Lord of Lords. What a team…What a great task!

It's in this 10th chapter as I said earlier, Luke, the beloved physician  and writer of this biblical book brings before us the formation of a special evangelistic task force, a team of 70 people that Jesus sent out into city after city to pave the way for His arrival in their cities. This event is a continuation of what he did with the 12 original disciples in chapter 9. In that chapter, Jesus made it clear that He was nearing the end o His ministry in person on earth and was already focused on the upcoming trial and crucifixion to take place in and outside Jerusalem on the hill that was called Calvary.

That’s what the Psalmist said in Psalms 107:20 . He tells us God sends His Word and that sent word will heal and a deliver us from destruction. My brothers and sisters, whenever God sends a word of healing and/ or a word of deliverance, they are the kind of Word that makes you wonder  in awe and say like the Psalmist said in Psalms 107:21-22 : “Oh, that men would give thanks to the Lord for His goodness,  And for His wonderful works to the children of men! Let them sacrifice the sacrifices of thanksgiving, And declare His works with rejoicing”.
Well, their evangelistic campaign was so successful, they came back full of joy and tell Jesus all about it.
How did Jesus respond? Glad you asked! Jesus took them to a desert place. He tried to get them out of town privately, but the word got around that they left town,  so the crowd followed Him. Jesus then talked to them about the Kingdom of God and heal them of whatever ailed them. Not only that, Jesus took 2 fish and five loaves o bread and fed five thousand and took up 12 baskets of leftovers.

So in this text, Jesus sends out another group, a much larger group than the 12 This time, He sends a group of 70 to evangelize on a temporary mission to each city. Before they left to their mission, Jesus said to them, "The harvest truly is great, but the laborers are few; therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest. Jesus told them:  “Go your way:  behold, I send you out as lambs, to an assignment that is among wolves.”

Notice how he sent them out! He sent them out two and two There was much wisdom in sending them out this way. In fact, there were several good reasons they were sent out this way:

A. Jesus sent them out this way so they could help each other when tested, experiencing loneliness, and discouragements (Ecclesiastes 4:9-12)

Every now and then on the Christian battlefield, we get discouraged along the way. Sometimes, we feel like "Lord, I ain’t but me one". It's here that Solomon weighs in and gives us some wisdom concerning going out in twos, rather than as one: in Ecclesiastes 4: 9-12:  Solomon said: “two are better than one, Because they have a good reward for their labor. For if they fall, one will lift up his companion. But woe to him who is alone when he falls, For he has no one to help him up. Again, if two lie down together, they will keep warm; But how can one be warm alone? Though one may be overpowered by another, two can withstand him. And a threefold cord is not quickly broken. The pervading principle here is: "There is strength in numbers"

B. To lift each other up when the other one falls and to be a balance in success.

Along with Solomon said in Ecclesiastes 4: 9-12, in the twelfth chapter , verses 9 and 10, Solomon in speaking about the wisdom he had accumulated, concluded that when two work together, between the two servants, the right words, words that would be acceptable and would give greater understanding concerning accepting that Jesus was the Messiah the scriptures talked about coming to redeem those who would accept Him as the one who would come for the to convince the hearer that a change must take place in their life and circumstances.

C. To strengthen  each other in weakness when burdened.

He sent them two and two, so they might strengthen and encourage one another. If one fall, the other will help to raise him up. The Apostle Paul in Galatians 6:1-3:
"Brethren, if a man is overtaken in any trespass, you who are spiritual restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness, considering yourself lest you also be tempted. 2 Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ". (NKJV) Every once in a while  a servant can become weak in a particular area and need his team member to help him or her get refocused in life and with the missionary work . Trials and temptation is always looking for a means to take a child of God down. Satan will stop at nothing to hinder the work and weaken your faith.

4. For unifying the team and church in prayer (Matthew 18:19-20)

Jesus
said: "Again I say to you that if two of you agree on earth concerning anything that they ask, it will be done for them by My Father in heaven.  For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them."
(NKJV)
The care of the church-the power of admitting or excluding members-of organizing and establishing it-is committed to you, the apostles. When two of you agree, or have the same mind, feelings, and opinion, about the arrangement of affairs in the church, or about things desired for its welfare, and shall ask of God, it shall be done for them. See Acts 1:14-26; 15:1-29. The promise here has respect to the apostles in organizing the church.

5.For protection in attack (Ecclesiastes 4:12; Deuteronomy 32:30)
Solomon said in Ecclesiastes 4:12..."Though one may be overpowered by another, two can withstand him. And a threefold cord is not quickly broken". Jesus knew the seventy would face fierce opposition  from demonic spirits as these  wicked spirits would have influence over many they would encounter and minister to. As they prayed for one another and helped each other become stronger in the faith and encouraged by the power of God working in each of them as a team, Spiritually speaking, the more people praying in a matter, the more divine protection the people have against the opposition they receive as they were to do the evangelistic work assigned to them. They were responsible for protecting one another spiritually and physically. It was incumbent upon them to understand the  concept of strength in numbers.

In
Deuteronomy 32:30, the Bible teaches: How could one chase a thousand, And two put ten thousand to flight, Unless their Rock had sold them, And the Lord had surrendered them? The point this passage raises is without the Spirit of the Lord protecting  them they could not and actually do not cause their opposition to fear. As long as they were on the journey and doing exactly what the Lord instructed them to do, His hands of protection would be a shield to them and keep dangerous situations and people from overtaking them.

6.For confirmation of preaching (Deuteronomy 17:6; 19:15; Matthew 18:16)
The team concept Jesus established in sending out the seventy  and paring them up in "two's" was needed and necessary because according to these passages of scripture, there had to be a witness present to verify what was said and the results of the people's response to the message and the miracles. they were endowed by the Holy Spirit to do.

“God’s team for God’s task”: "The Importance of Teamwork in the Church and Everybody Fulfilling Their Roles"

Practical Application:
W
e are sent out as "sheep" doing God's work among the "wolves:.  Every day while on the battlefield for The Lord, we face all kinds of "wolves". Jesus said that the wolves are "greedy rulers", "hypocrites" and "false prophets" and "false teachers".

The Apostle Paul identified "other kinds of wolves", "spiritual wolves" that translate into the "works of the flesh". In Galatians 5:16-21 Paul identifies these wolves and tells us how to deal overcome each and every one of them. Paul said this is how you deal with them: "Walk in the Spirit" and you will not fulfill the lust of the flesh…What’s the reason? Here it is: the flesh lusts against the Spirit and the Spirit against the flesh. They are contrary to one another. So the things the team should be doing sometimes don’t get done because the war sometimes can get real fierce. But if the team members are led by the Holy Spirit, than the grace laws of God are in full operation in our lives and we are no under the law. Now what kind of spiritual wolves will the team have to deal with while we are doing God’s important task?

Metaphorically speaking.....

You’ll have to deal with adulterous wolves, fornicating wolves, unclean wolves,  lascivious wolves, Idolatry wolves, witchcraft wolves, wolves of wrath, strife, seditions and heresies. Then there are envying wolves, murdering wolves drunken wolves, and reveling kinds of wolves . Paul said, I told you in the past that those who exhibit a wolf like behavior  and do these things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. Like Jesus said, I’m sending you out as sheep among wolves, just make sure that you’re not a wolf in sheep’s clothing.

III. How are we as Team members on God Holy Team carry out the fellowship of the Covenant and principles of God’s Word and evangelistic mandate

We must set out with prayer (v. 2); and, in prayer, We must be duly affected with the necessities of the souls of men, which called for their help. We must look about, and see how great the harvest was and is.

We must see what abundance of people there were that wanted to have the gospel preached to them and were willing to receive it, nay, that had at this time their expectations raised of the coming of the Messiah and of his kingdom. When we look around and see the hatred and the malice and godless agendas that are openly displayed even in some of our own homes, we must remember we still have a charge to keep and a God to glorify.

We must remember that God never intended for any man to go to hell and we must do our due diligence to share the good news of the Gospel to every one , whether in the long run they choose to accept it or reject it. This world is ripe for a great harvest  for the Lord, and it’s going to take a team effort to accomplish that harvest. The songwriter put it all in perspective: How to reach the masses, men of every birth…For the answer Jesus gave us the key….He said and I, if I be lifted from the earth, I’ll draw all men unto me. You see, the world is hungry for the living bread….lift the Savior up for them to see…He said if I be lifted up from the earth…I’ll draw all men unto me. Lift Him up…I said lift HIM up….still He speaks from eternity..

On a personal note: If you are on God’s  team, every  Ministers, deacons, and everybody else in the Body of Christ should apply themselves to their mission work with a deep concern for precious souls. We must see them as the riches of this world, which ought to be secured for Christ. Secondly, those of us who say we’re standing on the promises of God but when it comes to evangelism, we are sitting on the premises. That’s why the laborers are so few. In Jesus’ earthly day, the Jewish teachers were many, but they were not labors; they did not gather in souls to God's kingdom, but were more concerned about their personal interests and political affiliation. Those of us that are good ministers , good soldiers in the army  of the Lord do wish that there were more good ministers, and more good soldiers, for there is a lot more work to do and plenty work for more. It is common for tradesmen not to care how few there are of their own trade; but Christ would have the laborers in his vineyard reckon it a matter of complaint when the laborers are few.  In other words it’s not enough to to just care about it we need to complain about it.

They must earnestly desire to receive their mission from God, that he would send them forth as laborers into his harvest who is the Lord of the harvest, and that he would send others forth; for, if God send them forth, they may hope he will go along with them and give them success. Let them therefore say, as the prophet (Isa 6:8), Here I am, send me. It is desirable to receive our commission from God, and then we may go on boldly.

We must set out with an expectation of trouble and persecution: "Behold, I send you forth as lambs among wolves; but go your ways, and resolve to make the best of it. Your enemies will be as wolves, bloody and cruel, and ready to pull you to pieces; in their threatening and reviling, they will be as howling wolves to terrify you; in their persecutions of you, they will be as ravening wolves to tear you. But you must be as lambs, peaceable and patient, though made an easy prey of." It would have been very hard thus to be sent forth as sheep among wolves, if he had not endued them with his spirit and courage.

Personal Provisions

We must not encumber ourselves with a load of provisions, as if we were going a long voyage, but depend upon God and our friends to provide what was convenient for them: "Carry neither a purse for money, nor a scrip or knapsack for clothes or victuals, nor new shoes and salute no man by the way.". Not that Christ would have his ministers to be rude, morose, and unmannerly; but, have an urgency about the Lord’s business.  We must go as men in haste, that had their particular places assigned them, where they must deliver their message, and in their way directly to those places must not hinder or retard themselves with needless ceremonies or compliments.  We must go as men of business, business that relates to another world, which they must be intent in, and intent upon, and therefore must not entangle themselves with conversation about secular affairs.

We all ministers of the word; and ambassadors for Jesus Christ attend to your office.  We must go as serious men, and men in sorrow. It was the custom of mourners, during the first seven days of their mourning, not to salute any, Job 2:13. Christ was a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief; and it was fit that by this and other signs his messengers should resemble him, and likewise show themselves affected with the calamities of mankind which they came to relieve, and touched with a feeling of them.
Finally, we must show, not only their goodwill, but God's good-will, to all to whom they came, and leave the issue and success to him that knows the heart, v. 5,6.

Ephesians 1:1-11
Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God,
To the saints who are in Ephesus, and faithful in Christ Jesus:

Salvation Through Jesus Christ

Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
Redemption in Christ
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love, having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will, to the praise of the glory of His grace, by which He made us accepted in the Beloved.
In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace which He made to abound toward us in all wisdom and prudence,  having made known to us the mystery of His will, according to His good pleasure which He purposed in Himself, that in the dispensation of the fullness of the times He might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven and which are on earth — in Him.

Bible Study Series: Exposition of the “Ephesians’ Epistle” (Ephesians Chapter One) “Man’s Redemption: The Work of Salvation Through Jesus Christ”

Introduction:

At the time the Apostle Paul wrote this epistle to the Church in Ephesus, Ephesus was s great commercial city that was located at the mouth of the Cayster River, on the shore of the Aegean Sea in Asia Minor. Ephesus was about 50 miles south of Smyrna where Jesus told the Apostle John on the Isle of Patmos to write an important letter to the church (another of the 7 churches in Asia Minor) located there that bears its name concerning the spiritual status of their relationship with God. One thing Ephesus was noted for was the temple of Artemus (Diana) according to Acts 19:27. It was said to be one of the great wonders of the world in Paul’s time. As Paul writes to the Christians in the Ephesian church, he’s writing explaining the work of salvation God did in the behalf through the life and work of Jesus Christ. Paul opens the greeting in the letter with the following words: Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God to the saints and to the faithful in Jesus Christ.

Here Paul makes it a point to let this church and the Church of Corinth know that his call to be an apostle was not the result of human appointment, or authority. It came, he said in accordance with the will of God, and His command. Paul said God’s will concerning his calling to apostleship and the preaching of the Gospel was made known to him by special revelation granted to him at his conversion, in Acts 9. Paul often refers to the fact that he had received a direct commission from God, and that he responded on the authority and will of God and did not act on his own authority.

Salutation: Grace and Peace to You From God the Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ. (Vs. 2)
After addressing the church, the next thing he did was to send a greeting that if itself was a familiar greeting and embedded blessing known among the Hebrews whenever they met one another in passing:

“Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.”

Whenever the ancient people greeted one another, they would always say Grace be to you and peace from God to one another. It was the customary for the ancient people to greet one another in this way every time they met. It was similar to the favorite salutation that the Jewish people would use whenever they passed each other along the way … Now, what the Jews would actually say to each other was “Shalom”… Peace…  and then they would say….peace be with you…with “heavy emphasis” on the word “Shalom”… “peace” ….In fact…Peace was their favorite term… and if you really think about it,,, it’s easy to understand why “Peace” would be the inspirational word of the day. Along their journeys from one place to another, there was always the danger of being mugged or robbed by marauders along the traveling paths. This greeting was also a prayer that God would grant them peace and give them grace to make it to their destination without suffering any type of harm.

So… it’s in this 2nd verse, the Apostle Paul piggybacks off these ancient greeting and prayer blessing and here he greets, the church by saying: “Grace be to you and peace from God the father and from the Lord Jesus Christ.”

As I said a little earlier, by greeting them in this manner, Paul was conveying a
“powerful message” embedded inside the greeting. So understand anytime Paul said “Grace” and “peace” to anyone in the church, what Paul was really saying was: “Be a partaker of divine favor”!

Paul constantly reminded them that God is the source where favor and every blessing comes from”. It was another way of saying to every believer: Let your eyes look to the hills where your help comes from… because all of your help… comes from the Lord who made heaven and earth.

And if you do this often enough and have enough experiences in your life that proves beyond a shadow of a doubt
that God truly is a very present help in times of trouble,  you will began to believe what is said in Philippians 3: 13-14:

‘Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do,
forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the mark (goal) for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.’

After greeting them in such a powerful manner, Paul goes on to tell them just how blessed they are to be a child of God and saved because of Jesus Christ:

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ who hath blessed us with spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ.”

It is what Paul said here that lets the believers know in Ephesus that they have an “elevated” status in Christ Jesus and because of the grace of God. It’s very important to know that as a believer in Jesus Christ, the believer will find themselves in God’s favor in the following ways because of Grace:

a.     “Blessed
Being blessed of God means God has laid a foundation of gratitude for what HE has done. Paul here focuses on God's eternal purpose in regard to the plan of salvation He implemented for man before the foundation of the world. Paul joyfully expressed to the Ephesian converts that God is worthy of our praise for forming such a redemption plan and that his eternal purposes, that are now manifested to people, gives us an exalted view of both HIS character and glory.
Unfortunately, many people fail to see God the right was as described in Galatians 5:22 (Fruit of the Spirit) but see HIM in a manner contrary to the way HE really is. Many people have over the centuries and even in this modern day feel that the plans of God concerning man are unjust, stern, unfair and forbidding and being too restricting. Often times bring His character into question, and they blaspheme HIS name, especially when they fail to get what they desire for God or when God chose not to rescue them from every troubling situation they found themselves in, especially when they sinned and got themselves in that trouble.
The
“us” Paul refers to in the passage are the “true Christians”; those who have been washed in the blood of the Lamb and truly have given their lives completely over to Jesus Christ and worship HIM as both Savior and Lord.

“According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love:”

b.     “Chosen” to be Holy

Paul says here God had it in His plans all along (before the foundation of the world) even at the beginning of the formation of religion and its system to the Jews, a people HE formed from the seed of Abraham and from 12 sons of one man (Jacob, who later God changed his name to Israel) implement His plan of salvation in behalf of man because God knew that man was going to fall in the Garden and would have to be redeemed through the sacrificial death of Jesus Christ. He chose to

In
Revelation 13:8, the Bible declares that the “Lamb” of God was slain before the foundation of the world”. Even before God said: “Let there be light, and there was light”, (Genesis 1:3) and “Let us make man in OUR image and after OUR likeness”, (Genesis 1:26) man was going to eat the fruit from the forbidden tree (Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil)

God has decreed this from the beginning of the world, and has kept this in view from the beginning of the religious system of the Jews (Judaism) to bring the Gentiles to the knowledge of this glorious state of salvation by Christ Jesus.

Paul here shows the church that God had the Gentiles (us) in mind, even though through the eyes of ever Old Testament prophets, none of them saw the church coming in their prophetic view, nor did they see that the Gentiles, once seen and called “heathens” by God in the Dispensation of Law as also receiving the plan of salvation and to experience HIS grace, mercy and goodness in like manner he had for the Jews. So the blessings of the Gospel (salvation and redemption) that’s now so freely dispensed to them, (Gentiles) were the proof that God had chosen them as well and His purpose in giving them the Gospel message was the same which he had in view by giving the law to the Jews, namely, that they might be holy and without blame before him.

God’s objective was the same in respect to them both, therefore they both should consider that, in the same manner he loved them (agape love), so they should love one another: God having provided for each the same blessings, they should therefore be holy-fully separated from earth and sin, and consecrated to God and  living their lives without blame-having no spot nor imperfection, their inward holiness agreeing with their outward consecration. But as love is the fulfilling of the law, love must fill their hearts toward God and each other, and must be the only motive and end of all their words and works.

“Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will,” (Vs. 4)

The Greek word for “adoption” is “proorizoo”, which is translated to mean: “to set a boundary or bounds before” and to “pre-determine”. The word conveys the essential idea of setting a boundary or a limit beforehand. It’s important that we   understand that God determines all boundaries and limits beforehand. As it pertained to the salvation of Gentiles, God has this in mind beforehand before he made man. However, in the schematics of God’s overall plan for man and the world, He has an appointed time for all things to come to pass. The question that comes to the forefront is, as it pertains to “predestination, are all men predestined to be saved no matter how they may live their lives?  The answer is “NO!

Having predestinated us in the truest sense means God in His infinite wisdom already knew the plight that would confront Adam in the Garden of Eden in Genesis Chapter 3.
God being omniscient knows all things and knew a plan of salvation for the redemption of man was necessary because he knew what was in the heart of Lucifer (Isaiah 14:12-14) and the evil (iniquity) that was found in him. (Ezekiel 28:15)  He also knew that Adam, despite His warning not to eat the fruit from the forbidden tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil would do so and fall prey to the “Sin of Disobedience”. So in the infinite wisdom and “foreknowledge of God, the “LAMB” (Revelation 13:8)  was slain before the foundation of the world as a remedy for the “SIN” that would be introduced in Eden by a fallen Lucifer, (now known as Satan) and appeared so in the form of a serpent to Adam and Eve who God made in His image and after His likeness in Genesis 1:26-27. Now, this doesn’t mean that Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God was actually put to death "from the foundation of the world." (in eternity past) It means the decision was made by God to give Jesus Christ as the atoning sacrifice whose blood would satisfy the payment of SIN needed for the redemption of man in the future after he would have fallen to disobedience in the Garden of Eden.
Predestination here means here that God never intended any man to die and go to hell. However man had to be in right standing with God in order to go to Heaven and God wanted man to follow, obey and worship Him of his own volition and not be forced to do so against his will.

Predestination means the acceptance of the Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, that is the salvation work  He did in submitting to crucifixion on the cross at Calvary predestines the convert to eternal life whereas the rejection of Jesus will predestine that same person to eternal damnation. The purpose was so certain, it was so constantly represented by bloody sacrifices from the earliest ages, all typifying the future Savior, that it might be said that he was "slain from the foundation of the world.

“To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved”. (Vs. 6)

So in accepting Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, Jesus now adopts us as “Sons” and we are adopted into HIM - the Father, (Colossians 1:20)  that is, into an inward union with God in order that we should be partakers of the divine nature  of God.  (2 Peter 1:4) God has regard to Himself and the glory of His grace (Ephesians 1:6, 12, 14) as His ultimate end. He had one only begotten Son, and He was pleased, for His own glory, to choose out of a lost world many to become His adopted sons, to the good pleasure of his will. God chose to do this of HIS own volition before the foundation of the world. God's purpose is that all believers should be adult sons in his family, in which Christ is the "firstborn" (Romans 8:29).

Any attempt on our part to base God's election and predestination upon human merit, whether foreknown or otherwise, is unscriptural and futile. The cause of God's choice of us is not to be found in us, but in him alone. It was His will to do it and He answered to no one but Himself. Therefore God gets all the glory to all things and all that he did in behalf of man by His grace that man in no way could have done for himself to reconcile the divide that SIN created in his relationship with God. God chose to do it all and didn’t need us to do anything but accept what He did through Jesus Christ.

Everything done by God’s election is designed to compel man to praise the Lord. What the Lord elected pertained to life, and pardon, and holiness, and heaven in man’s behalf, man in response owes God the highest praise.  God chooses people to be holy, not sinful. He chooses us to be happy, not miserable; God wants us to be pure, not impure. God wants nobody to perish and everybody come to repentance. It’s His desire that all men be saved, not any man to be lost. For all these things God deserves to be and should be praised.

We owe the Lord praise for everything because He chose to offer us both Grace and mercy rather than death and eternal damnation. He could have left the whole sinful race in a fallen state to wander in the wilderness of this life and die. All praises due to him, especially when you realize that there will be a staggering number of people that will be saved; so many that John the Apostle in Revelation 7:9 saw a number of people that no man could number whose robes were washed white in the blood of the Lamb. So, we are accepted in the beloved of our God.

Concerning Our Redemption: It’s in Jesus Christ
“In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace” (Vs. 7)

In Jesus Christ, there are 3 main benefits in the outpouring of Redemption:
A.   We have deliverance not only from sin but from the evil consequences brought on by sin. The apostle in this verse is not referring to "nations" and to "national privileges but any individual who willingly accepts God redemption method. It’s through His blood (Jesus) that the atonement is made in our behalf.

B.   We obtain the forgiveness of sin through His blood, the atoning factor. Forgiveness isn’t all the benefits we get in being redeemed.

C.    Salvation is the most important benefit because it reconnects our relationship with God and replaces the disconnect SIN caused that severed the original relationship Adam had with God before the fall in the Garden of Eden.

In addition, in the outpouring of God’s redeeming power in Christ, we will receive many other benefits of our redemption. Here are some of the many other benefits:
a.     Obtaining the hope of heaven.
b.    Being sealed by and filled with the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.
c.       Given more grace to guide and support us in trial.
d.     Even dying a peaceful death. (Ephesians 1:8; Ephesians 1:9)

“Wherein he hath abounded toward us in all wisdom and prudence;” (Vs. 8)

That is, in the dispensation of mercy and goodness by Christ Jesus, the Apostles and ministers of yesteryear and the and ministers and Pastors of today have been given the most complete instructions of heavenly things under the unction of the Holy Spirit in order that we would know when and where to preach and teach the gospel with the Word of God having maximum effect upon the hearers and causing more who heard the Gospel to be saved. As called messengers of God, ministers in the faith, we must exercise both patience and prudence as we minister to the masses of people we encounter in the world so that the Holy Spirit can minister through us and to their very souls.

It’s been said: “Every wise man is not a prudent man, and every prudent man is not a wise man”. Wisdom and prudence should be expected in the apostles of Paul’s time and the many preacher/ evangelist of our time who truly has dedicates themselves to the Gospel ministry and living constantly under the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

Wisdom," according to Sir William Temple, "is that which makes men judge what are the best ends, and means to attain that end, as well as gives a man advantage of counsel and direction." "Prudence then is wisdom applied to practice; or that discreet, apt suiting as well of actions as words, in their due place, time, and manner." Every minister of Christ needs these still; and if he abide not under the influence of both, not only his prayers but his ministerial labors will be all hindered.

“Having made known unto us the mystery of his will, according to his good pleasure which he hath purposed in himself”(Vs. 9)

What was the great mystery?

The “mystery” was that the Gentiles who believed in Jesus Christ would be received into the Church of God, and have all the same privileges of the believing Jews, without being obliged to submit to circumcision, and perform the rites and ceremonies of the Jewish law. This was that mystery, that hidden thing which wasn’t revealed before; nowhere written about in any of the Old Testament by name. In fact, no Old Testament prophet or seer saw the Church in their eyes containing the things God has planned for the Jews and Gentiles in the prophetic future. Yet, this well hidden mystery had now been revealed in Paul and Peter’s time only to them and the rest of the ministers and apostles, as well as to us. It was God's will that it should be so, but that this will he kept hidden unto the present time.

He had purposed in himself, not being induced by any consideration from without. God chose to of His own volition to reveal this mystery. He did it ….“That in the dispensation of the fullness of times he might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven, and which are on earth; even in him”: (Vs. 10)

Here the phrase “fullness of time” means in the appropriate time appointed by God when the Gospel message, and the plan by which God has provided salvation for a lost world would be finally revealed and put into action and all that are to be saved will be. God knows who they all are. When the plan is revealed, over the course of time, it would be explained as the Apostle Paul was beginning to do in the 1st chapter.

Once God gathers all believers, both Jews and Gentiles, into one church under Jesus Christ, their head and governor is revealed, and it would no longer be a mystery, but a reality and one day in the Dispensation of the
“Fullness of Time” or what’s also called the “Ages of Ages”. This is when Jesus completes his salvation work and having gathered all things unto Him, then relinquishes that authority and gives all that had been gathered to HIM to God the Father (Jehovah) that God may be all and in all.

It means in the glorious plan of Jehovah God, all things would be summed up, or brought in   divine harmony in heaven and earth through the Christian Age, and since evil, Satan, and the demonic kingdom will finally be eradicated and destroyed in the Lake of Fire at the end of the Millennial Kingdom reign of Jesus Christ
, (Revelation 20:1-15) God will have one divine empire, under one head, with all things common, under the same divine laws. There will be unity in the kingdom of God. All HIS friends on earth and in heaven shall be united, and all shall have a common head.

Now, at the present time in modern history and this dispensation of Grace, there is a degree of alienation in the cosmos. Since SIN entered into this world and death came as a result, Sin didn’t just have a separating affect between man and God, it also had a devastating affect upon all the earth.

The earth has been separated from other worlds by rebellion. It has gone off into apostasy and sin. It refuses to acknowledge the Great Head to which other worlds are subject, and the object is to restore it to its proper place, so that there shall be one great and united kingdom. The effects of transgression are seen everywhere; and the object of the plan of redemption is to put things on their Edenic order, restoring them as they were in the beginning. As a result, everything will be put under the Lord Jesus, to be brought under his sovereign control, thus, constituting one vast harmonious empire.

All "things" are placed under Christ. (Ephesians 1:22; Matthew 28:18,)

God’s plan of restoration also includes restoration that brings harmony back in the universe. Sin has produced disorder not only in "mind," but in "matter." The world is disarranged. There is now discord and disunion. Un repentant man is separated from God, and from all holy beings. Between him and every holy being there is by nature discord and alienation. Un-regenerated man has no sympathy with the feelings and work of the angels; no love for their employment; no desire to be associated with them. Nothing can be more unlike than the customs, feelings, laws, and habits which prevail on earth, from those which prevail in heaven. But the object of the plan of salvation is to restore harmony to those alienated communities, and produce eternal concord and love.

When all principalities and powers are finally put under HIS feet and there is no more rebellion from them, there will be only one kingdom, in which there shall be no more alienation, and from that time forward, there shall be harmony and love. The things which are to be united in Christ, are those which are "in heaven and which are on earth." Nothing is said of "hell" because at this point death and hell has both been cast into the Lake of Fire.
(Revelation 20:14) Of course this passage cannot and does not teach the doctrine of universal salvation, since there is one world which is not to have a part in this ultimate union.

Concerning the redeemed on earth.
The objective is to bring them into harmony with the inhabitants of heaven. This is the great object proposed by the plan of salvation. It is to found one glorious and eternal kingdom, that shall comprise of all holy beings on earth and all in heaven.
Finally, here are 5 principles of the God’s unified empire.
(1) The greatness and glory of God’s plan of salvation.

The "reconcile worlds," is no minuscule task and God, the great architect purposed to bring harmony throughout the universe out of chaos and disharmony on earth because of the “ill” effects of SIN. He did it Himself through the person of Jesus Christ.

(2) The “Angelic” interest in the plan of redemption; (1 Peter 1:10-13)
“Of this salvation the prophets have inquired and searched carefully, who prophesied of the grace that would come to you, searching what, or what manner of time, the Spirit of Christ who was in them was indicating when He testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ and the glories that would follow. To them it was revealed that, not to themselves, but to us they were ministering the things which now have been reported to you through those who have preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven — things which angels desire to look into”.

The angels are deeply concerned about the redemption of those who, with them, are to constitute that great kingdom which is to be eternal. So much so the Bible said heaven rejoices over every soul that is added to the Kingdom of God. So having happiness for them without envy; being devoid of any feeling that the accession of others will diminish "their" felicity or glory, the angels wait to hail the coming of the redeemed and rejoice to receive even one who comes to be united to their number.

(3)    This plan was worthy of the efforts of the Son of God.

Only Jesus was qualified to carry out the sacrificial part on God’s redemption plan. Blood has to be shed. He has to voluntarily subject himself to be nailed hands and feet to a cross to die for the sin of man and he did just that. To restore harmony in heaven and earth; to prevent the evils of alienation and discord; to rear one immense and glorious kingdom, was an object worthy the incarnation of the Son of God
.

(4) The glory of Our Redeemer.
Jesus is to be exalted as the Head of this united and ever-glorious kingdom, and all the redeemed on earth and the angelic hosts shall acknowledge him as their common Sovereign and Head.

(5) This is (salvation and redemption) the greatest and most important enterprise on earth.
It should engage every heart, and enlist the powers of every soul. It should be the earnest desire of all to swell the numbers of those who shall constitute this united and ever-glorious kingdom, and to bring as many as possible of the human race into union with the holy inhabitants of the other world through Jesus Christ.

 1 Peter 4:12-19:        Suffering for God's Glory
"Beloved, do not think it strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened to you; but rejoice to the extent that you partake of Christ's sufferings, that when His glory is revealed, you may also be glad with exceeding joy. If you are reproached for the name of Christ, blessed are you, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you. On their part He is blasphemed, but on your part He is glorified. But let none of you suffer as a murderer, a thief, an evildoer, or as a busybody in other people's matters. Yet if anyone suffers as a Christian, let him not be ashamed, but let him glorify God in this matter.
For the time has come for judgment to begin at the house of God; and if it begins with us first, what will be the end of those who do not obey the gospel of God? Now If the righteous one is scarcely saved, Where will the ungodly and the sinner appear?" Therefore let those who suffer according to the will of God commit their souls to Him in doing good, as to a faithful Creator.

Bible Study Outline: Exposition of 1 Peter 4: 12-19  Part Two
Lesson title: “Choosing Joy Even in Life’s Difficulties”
Introduction:
In the eleven verses that we covered in the beginning of the 4th chapter in our last Bible study, the Apostle Peter reminded the Jewish converts that they needed to arm themselves with the same mind of readiness that Jesus had when He suffered for us in the flesh back in the day, knowing that at the end of His suffering was death on the cross.

They were to have the same readiness of mind Jesus had because they were surely going to need it when they began to experience any persecution for their religious beliefs, even if the end results of their suffering was martyrdom because of their faith in Jesus.
They were to change the way they were living and denounce living the rest of their lifetime here on earth catering to lustful desires. They were to totally submit to the Lord and commit their whole lives to live according to His principles for life and carry out His will.

Peter referred back to Christ’s suffering to remind them that their suffering was truly because of their faith change from Judaism to Jesus. Jesus while on earth in teaching His disciples told them all that as long as they lived, they would face trials, tribulation and would be persecuted for His name sake. But He also told them to be of “good” cheer because He has already overcome the world.

So in 1 Peter 4:12, Peter encourages them to choose to be joyful even in all the difficulties of life. He reminded them that suffering was a part of the Christian journey
.

“
Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you: But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ's sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy.” (vs. 12-13)

When your trials come and you are suffering persecution for your faith, don’t be taken by surprise and consider them as something unusual and something you had no reason to expect would happen to you now; which happened already to others like you before.

The reason the Bible calls these trials “fiery” is because the people who were to attack them for their faith in Jesus were determine to eradicate this new “religious” movement (the  Christian church in Jesus Christ)  from the face of the earth and would use every vicious maneuver at their disposal to intimidate anyone who would remotely consider leaving Judaism and embracing Jesus.

At the time Peter addressed the Hebrew and Gentile converts in his letter, they were already being persecuted and sometimes it was extremely vicious. Approximately some 20 to 25 years later in 70 A.D., Bible history reveals they faced trials that included confiscation their personal property, being severely beaten, burned at the stake covered with tar. The Romans under the leadership of its military general Titus literally ran Israel out of Rome and killed many of the Hebrews who were not able to escape. Both Apostles Peter and Paul died in Rome during the tirade of Nero, the emperor, who is said to been playing the violin while Rome was on fire and blamed the Christians and Jews in general for starting the fire. Paul was beheaded and Peter was crucified upside down.

In verse 13, Peter employed them to rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ" s sufferings That is, they were suffering the same kinds of afflictions Jesus suffered and for the same reasons. They were to see their suffering as a “badge of honor.”   In a similar matter of speaking, the Apostle Paul mapped out what it meant to suffer for the cause of Christ in sharing his testimony to the Church of Colossae. Paul in his testimony to the church revealed:

(1) He suffered for the same cause as Christ suffered; the truth that salvation alone was in Jesus, not the Law because Jesus is the Messiah and the "end" of the Law for righteousness sake to everyone that believed this.
(2) He endured the same kind of sufferings, to some extent, in reproaches, persecutions, and opposition from the world from the religious leaders; because they refused to accept Jesus Christ as the Messiah
(3) He had not yet suffered as much as Christ did in this cause, and, though he had suffered greatly, yet there was much that was lacking to make him equal in this respect to how much the Savior suffered
(4) He felt that persecution and suffering was an experience to be earnestly desired to be made in all respects just like Christ, and that in his present circumstances he was fast filling up that which was lacking, so that he would have a more complete resemblance to him

What Paul said here is based on the leading desire within his soul to follow that the great principle of  life which is to be just like Jesus Christ in character as well as in times of suffering and destiny. James 1:2 says we are to count it all joy when you fall into different forms of temptations. (trials and persecutions)

Having this strong wish, Paul had been led to pursue a course of life which caused  him to go through trials that strongly resembling those Christ endured; and, as fast as possible, He does not mean or imply there was anything lacking or deficient in all the sufferings which Christ endured in making an atonement for our sins which was to be supplied by his followers, so that their merits might be added to his in order to secure the salvation of men, but that there was still much lacking on his part before he should be entirely conformed to the Savior in his sufferings, and that his present condition was such as rapidly to fill that up
in my flesh, that is, in bodily suffering for his body's (the Body of Christ) sake, which is the church. They were to go through all of their suffering, trials and persecution. Peter told them when the Lord’s glory shall be revealed (at the day of judgment) they would experience gladness with exceeding joy.

A child of God experiences joy at death, knowing their troubles on this earth are finally over and he or she will meet Jesus face to face. And hear Jesus say: Servant, well done! Enter into the joy of the Lord.
`

They were to regard any suffering for the Lord as a reason to rejoice, because their suffering would publicly identify them as followers of Jesus Christ; that they were identified with His persecution throughout His ministry and subsequently His death on the cross. Paul said it this way: “That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death.”

There are 2 Types of Reproaches: For the “name” of Christ and for “evil works”.
“If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye; for the spirit of glory and of God rests upon you: on their part he is evil spoken of, but on your part he is glorified”.

If you are persecuted because you belong to Jesus, Jesus said you are blessed. To be reproached for the name of Christ is to be reproached for being a Christian, for you have chosen to be Christ like. This is the highest honor to which any Christian can achieve in this world, and therefore the apostle says to those believers that do, "Happy are ye."

In Matthew 5:10-12, Jesus said to the multitude at the mount:

“Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. "Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake. Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.”

The message was they were to regard their suffering condition or trials as being blessed. Rejoicing because of trials didn’t mean they would find personal and positive enjoyment on being reproached and vilified, no, it meant as far as God was concerned, their suffering for Jesus Christ would be seen as a blessed condition. Being persecuted in this case would be similar to the suffering Jesus went through, and it would show that they truly loved Jesus and were his real friends. The end results of their going through the periods of persecution would be accompanied with rich spiritual influences in the present world; and would be followed by the rewards they would receive in heaven. As the Holy Spirit rested upon Jesus , He also rested upon those followers of Christ who suffered persecution.

The essential idea is, if they were called to suffer in the cause of the Redeemer, they would not be left or forsaken. They might hope that God would impart his Spirit to them in proportion to their sufferings in behalf of the Christian religion, and that they would have augmented joy and peace. There is no doubt this is what takes place with those who suffer persecution. This is the primary reason why they are so sustained in their trials and able to rejoice through the pain. The same principle applies, doubtless, to all the forms of trial which the children of God pass through; and in sickness, bereavement, loss of property, and disappointment in their worldly plans, and death itself. They may hope that larger measures of the Spirit's influences will rest upon them. Hence, it is often gain to the believer to suffer.

On their part, He (Holy Spirit) is evil spoken of:
That is, the Holy Spirit. They blaspheme him, and openly criticize Him because you now being guided in life by Him. If you remember, Jesus worked the miracles of God by the Holy Spirit and was accused of using satanic means from Beelzebub, the prince of demons. Jesus made it clear that all sins can be forgiven but one, that is blaspheme against the Holy Spirit. To blaspheme the Holy Spirit means to attribute any work of God to Satan; to give demons or Satan credit for anything only God can bring about. They reproached his (Holy Spirit) sacred influences by the way they treat of you and your relationship with Jesus Christ.

But on your part he is glorified.
By your manner of speaking of him, and by the honor done to him in the patience evinced in your trials, and in your purity of life. We glorify the Lord when we show patience in the trying of our faith. God is glorified in our behavior during the time of persecution when we exemplify patience and a willingness to endure the pains of affliction.

“But let none of you suffer as a murderer, or as a thief, or as an evildoer, or as a busybody in other men's matters”.
If you must suffer for you dedication to Christ, you are to make sure that it’s not for committing any crime, for other forms of wickedness, or being  guilty of injustice and wrong toward another person. Peter said they were to be very careful that their sufferings were brought upon them only because of the consequence of their religious beliefs, and not because any crime committed that they could be arrested and punished for. If there was even such charges were brought against them, there should be no pretense furnished for them by their lives. They weren’t to suffer as a busybody, that is, as one who meddles in other people’s affairs or other matters that does not concern them. Sadly you can always find someone who notoriously pries into the affairs of another, or somebody who attempts to control or direct other people and their personal affairs as if they were responsible for them, yet had no legal power of attorney concerning that person’s life of affairs.

“Yet if any man suffer as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God on this behalf. For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God?”

If a person suffers persecution because they are a Christian; there is no reason to be ashamed for the public ridicule. Public ridicule is one of Satan’s pet tactics. He hopes that if he can cause a child of God to be publicly ridiculed, the embarrassment would cause them to abandon their faith. In reality, it’s a great opportunity to glorify God because of your persecution and public ridicule. Persecution was common place during the time of Peter and Paul in the early church age. There was no reason not to expect some form of persecution to occur.  The Judaizers hatred of Christ and the Christian faith was well documented in the New Testament. Just as sure as their ancestors ridiculed Jesus while on earth they too were to suffer and experience vicious persecution.

Peter said to the persecuted Christians: “Let him not be ashamed!” In other words,
(1) Don’t be ashamed of your relationship with Christ so as to refuse to suffer on account of it.
(2) Don’t be ashamed that you are now despised and sadly maltreated. Expect to be treated poorly by those who are offended by the truth and choose to live counter to the way God intends all of us to live.

The believers of Jesus were to regard their” religion”  (Christianity) as honorable in every way, and all that fairly results from it in time and eternity as in every respect desirable. They should not to be ashamed to be called a Christian. They aren’t to be ashamed of the doctrines taught by Christianity.  We aren’t to be ashamed of the Savior (Jesus Christ) whom we professes to love. We’re not to be ashamed of the society and fellowship of those who are true Christians, as poor and despised though they may be. The Christian is not to be ashamed to perform any of the duties demanded by his religion and his convictions. We’re not to be ashamed to have our name cast out, and ourselves subjected to reproach and scorn.

A man should only be ashamed for that which is wrong. He should glory in all that which is right, regardless of whatever the consequences they encounter in opposition to their standing for what God said is right.

Christians now, even though many of us are not subjected to open persecution in many places, still are frequently reproached by the world on account of their religion; and though the rack may not be employed, and the fires of martyrdom are not enkindled, yet it is often true that one who is a believer is called to "suffer as a Christian." He may be reviled and despised. His views may be regarded as bigoted, narrow, or severe. His former friends and companions may leave him because he has become a Christian. A wicked father, or a frivolous and worldly mother, may oppose a child, or a husband may revile a wife, on account of their faith. In every one of these cases, the same spirit employed by Christ essentially is required which was enjoined on the early Christian martyrs. We are never to be ashamed of our religion, whatever results may follow from our attachment to it.

“But let him glorify God on this behalf.”

Let him praise God that he is deemed not unworthy to suffer in such a cause. It is a matter of thankfulness:
(1) that they may have this evidence that they are true Christians;
(2) that they may desire the advantages which may result from suffering as Christ did, and in his cause.

For the time is come That is, persecution and severe trials are now to be expected. There is reason to think that this fierce trial will now occur, and there is a propriety that it should be made. The trial that Peter spoke of was to test the true character of the church and its members. Secondly, that judgment must begin at the house of God.

In this case, it would be a God ordained trial which would determine the character of the people and the church. It refers to such calamities that would settle the question of whether there was any pure religion, or would test the value of the religious character which was professed. It was to "begin" at the house of God, or be applied to the church first, in order that the nature and worth of true religion might be seen. The church would go through many periods of persecution. Many scholars believe them to be 10 in number that would span for centuries. It would not be just aimed at the Jewish church but all Christians, both Jewish and Gentile.

“And if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God?”
Peter proposes here if God is willing to bring such severe trials upon us who have obeyed his gospel and walking in the “newness” of life in Christ, then why wouldn’t we believe that he will also bring the same kind of fierce trials upon those who are yet in their sins? After all, the Bible said He is no respecter of persons and will let the rain fall upon the just as well as the unjust.

So, if God chooses to unleash His judgment first on the household of faith to experience the “objectives” of these trials, could there be something unseen by us but clearly seen by God within us that required God uses such a method of dealing with His chosen and saved in this manner to produce the character and conduct we are suppose to exemplify as new creations in Christ Jesus,. In addition to that, if this is true concerning us, then what do you think God’s going to do “judgment-wise” to those who make absolutely no pretensions to embrace a pure religion in Jesus Christ, but live openly in transgression in the end?

The foregone conclusion we all should come to is, if God deals this strictly with his own people; then there is a “sin” issue unresolved in them which makes the visitations of his judgment proper to correct them first. That being the case, then it should be clearly certain that they who are not his people, but who live in iniquity, will be overwhelmed with the tokens of God’s severe wrath in the end.

The punishment God will unleash hereafter will be certain; and who can tell what will be the measure of its severity? Every wicked man, when he sees the trials which God brings upon his own people should tremble under the apprehension of the coming deeper calamity which will hereafter come upon himself.

We can conclude that the judgments which God brings upon his own people make it certain that the wicked won’t escape judgment and will be punished. If God does not spare his own people, why would he spare others who are not His?

We can also conclude the punishment of the wicked is merely delayed. It begins at the house of God. Christians are tried, and are recalled from their wanderings, and are prepared by discipline for the heavenly world. The punishment of the wicked is often delayed to a future world, and in this life sometimes, they have almost uninterrupted prosperity, but in the end their judgment and punishment will be certain. Punishment will come in the end. It cannot be avoided. Sooner or later justice requires that the wicked should be visited with the expressions of God’s divine displeasure of their sin, and in the future world there will be ample time for the infliction of all the punishment which they deserve.

And if the righteous scarcely be saved, where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear?
The apostle in this passage seems to have had his eye on a verse in Proverbs 11:31 and he has merely expanded and illustrated it: "Behold, the righteous shall be recompensed in the earth: much more the wicked and the sinner." By the question which he employs, he admits that the righteous are saved with difficulty, or that there are perils which jeopardizes their salvation, and which are of such a kind as to make it very near not to happen. They would indeed be saved, but it would be in such a manner as to show that the circumstances were such as to render it, to human appearances, doubtful and problematical. The potential problem of saving the “righteous” could have derail such act had not the following “difficulties” been resolved.

(1) The difficulty of forming a plan of salvation.
The salvation of man required a degree of wisdom completely beyond the capabilities of a natural man, and required  such a character that beforehand it would have been problematical and doubtful whether it could ever be done. There was only one way in which it could be done. There is no way human wisdom could have devised or thought of it? There was only one being who could save man and that was Jesus Christ. But who would have supposed that Jesus Christ, the Son of God would have been willing to become a man, and to die on a cross to do it? If he had been unwilling to come and die, the righteous could not have been saved. The great news was the “Trinity” was never in conflict as to the plan of salvation for man or the process it would take.

(2) The difficulty of bringing those who are saved to a willingness to accept of salvation.
As “free moral agents” all men were all disposed to reject it. There were many obstacles in the human heart, arising from pride, selfishness, unbelief, and the love of sin, which first must had to be overcome before anyone would accept God’s offer of mercy. There was only one agent who could overcome these things, and induce any of the race to embrace the gospel and that was-the Holy Spirit. But who could have anticipated that the Spirit of God (Holy Spirit) would have undertaken to renew and sanctify the polluted human heart? Yet, if he had failed, there could have been no salvation for anyone.

(3) The difficulty of keeping the saved from falling away amidst the many temptations and allurements of the world.
Many times, it seems doubtful whether those who have been converted will be kept to eternal life. They have so little religion; they yield so readily to temptation; they conform so much to the world; they have so little strength to bear up under trials, that it seems as if there was no power to preserve them and bring them to heaven. They are saved when they seemed almost ready to yield everything.

(4) The difficulty of rescuing them from the power of the great enemy of souls. Satan,
Satan, our adversary has vast power, and means, to steal, kill and destroy those who are the children of God. Often we are in most imminent danger, and it seems to be a question of doubtful issue whether we will not be entirely overcome and perish. It is no small matter to rescue a soul from the dominion of Satan, and to bring it to heaven, so that it shall be eternally safe. Through the internal struggles and the outward conflicts of life, it seems often a matter of doubt whether with all their effort they will be saved; and when they are saved, they will feel that they have been rescued from thousands of dangers, and that there has been many a time when they have stood on the very verge of ruin, and when, to human appearances, it was scarcely possible that they could be saved.

Concerning the “fate” of the Ungodly: Where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear?
What hope is there of their salvation? The answer is, they will certainly perish; and the doctrine in the passage is, that the fact that the righteous are saved with so much difficulty is proof that the wicked will not be saved at all. This follows, the reasoning that

(a) There is the same difficulty in their obtaining salvation which there was in the salvation of those who ultimately became righteous. The same difficulty arising from the love of sin, the hardness of the heart, and the arts and power of the adversary arose in both classes of people, yet the difference is the righteous accepted Jesus Christ and the wicked didn’t.  No one can be saved without effort, and in fact the righteous are saved by constant and strenuous effort on their part to accept Jesus and afterwards, yield to Him completely in order to be saved.

(b) But the wicked make no effort for their salvation. They make use of no means for it; they put forth no exertions to obtain it; they do not make it a part of their plan of life. How, then, can they be saved? But where will they appear? I answer: They can’t be saved without accepting Jesus Christ.

In Conclusion, they will appear somewhere. They will not cease to exist when they pass away from this world. Not one of them will be annihilated; because the soul of man never dies. And though they vanish from the earth, and will be seen here no more, they will make their appearance in some other part of the universe. Their ending location is in hell and ultimately in the Lake of Fire.

They will appear at the Great White Throne Judgment-seat, to receive their sentence according to the deeds done in the body. The wicked will certainly be destroyed. There will be a state of future punishment, for this refers to what is to occur in the future world. The punishment of the wicked will be eternal, for it is the opposite of what is meant by saved. The time will never come when it will be said that they are saved!

Wherefore let them that suffer according to the will of God commit the keeping of their souls to him in well doing, as unto a faithful Creator.
Since there is so much danger; since there is no one else that can keep them in dangerous times but God ; and since he is our God and so faithful, let the Christian commit all their interests to him. Let them leave everything in God’s unchanging hand, while faithfully performing their Christian every duty each day, not being anxious for the end results. The Christians are supposed to be constantly doing good works for the Lord, and seeking to carry out every entrusted duty in a proper manner. Their business was always to do right with the results to be left with God. Any man, woman, boy or girl who’s engaged always in well-doing can safely commit all his interest to God.

You can be assured that God can be completely trusted and you can confide in Him. In all His attributes, and all the relationships in which He sustains us as Creator, Redeemer, Moral Governor, and Judge, God can be trusted. In all of these, and in all other respects, we can come boldly before Him with confidence, with the blessed assurance we can put unwavering complete trust in Him.

Let’s look at HIM as Our Creator:
As our Creator, as one who has brought us, and all creatures and things into being, we may be sure that he will be "faithful" to the design which he had in view for man and creation. From that design he will never depart until it is fully accomplished. God never abandons His purpose which he has formed, and we may be assured that he will faithfully complete everything He started (Philippians 1:6)

As our Creator we may come to Him, and look to Him for His protection and care.
He made us. He had a design in our creation. He so endowed us that we might live forever, and so that we might honor and enjoy Him. He did not create us that we might be miserable; nor does He wish that we should be. He formed us in such a way that, if we choose, we may be eternally happy. In the path in which He has appointed us to go, if we pursue it and travel the path, we can be sure of His help and protection. If we really set our aim to accomplish every purpose we were made, we can be certain that He will show Himself to be the "faithful Creator;" one in whom we may always confide. And even though we have wandered from Him, and have long forgotten why we were made, and have loved and served the creature more than the Creator, we may be sure, if we will return to Him, that He will not forget the design for which He originally made us.

Finally, as our Creator we may still confide in Him.
Redeemed by the blood of His Son, and renewed by His Spirit after the image of Him who erected us, we may still go to Him as our Creator, and may pray that even yet the high and noble ends for which we were made may be accomplished in us. Doing this, we shall find Him as true to that purpose as though we had never sinned.

1 Peter 4:3-11
For we have spent enough of our past lifetime in doing the will of the Gentiles — when we walked in lewdness, lusts, drunkenness, revelries, drinking parties, and abominable idolatries. In regard to these, they think it strange that you do not run with them in the same flood of dissipation, speaking evil of you. They will give an account to Him who is ready to judge the living and the dead. For this reason the gospel was preached also to those who are dead, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit.

Serving for God's Glory
But the end of all things is at hand; therefore be serious and watchful in your prayers. And above all things have fervent love for one another, for "love will cover a multitude of sins." Be hospitable to one another without grumbling. As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. If anyone speaks, let him speak as the oracles of God. If anyone ministers, let him do it as with the ability which God supplies, that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belong the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen.

Introduction: “The Way We Were Before Jesus”
Background Text: 1 Peter 4:3-11 in Review:
“Why shouldn’t we suffer for Christ?"

"For the time past of our life may suffice us to have wrought the will of the Gentiles, when we walked in lasciviousness, lusts, excess of wine, revelllings, banquetings, and abominable idolatries":

Peter reminded the Jewish converts that they needed to arm themselves with the same mind of readiness that Jesus had when He suffered for us in the flesh back in the day, knowing that at the end of His suffering on this earth was death on the cross. Converts were to have the same readiness of mind Jesus had whenever they experience any suffering because of their new religious beliefs, even if the end results of their suffering was martyrdom for their faith in Jesus. They were to change the way they were living and denounce living the rest of their lifetime here on earth catering to lustful desires.  They were compelled to totally submitting to the Lord and committing all of their ways unto His will. Peter referred back to Christ’s suffering to remind them that their suffering was indeed because of their faith change from Judaism to Jesus.

Peter said: back in the day, they have spent an enormous amount of time indulging their selves in engaging in wicked propensities (vulgar habits and traditions they were use to) and embracing these lewd acts for the “pleasures” they sought to derive from them. He further stated: We should hereafter live in a different manner than that of the Gentiles, men who lived based lives of “common indulgences” but first, realizing living a life of lasciviousness was never the proper way to live. At a some point when we all got our fill of whatever we were doing openly and in the cloak of after-hours and were ready to let it go and try something else, we would eventually say, "We have had enough of these things; we have tried them; We got out of the experience all we wanted of felt all we can get from it. Logic finally kicked in here and the conclusion we came to was: There is no reason why we should indulge in them anymore”.
.

God's Response:   The Wrath of God Comes Against the Sinful Indulgences of Men.

The Literal truth:  The Jews were doing many of the same things the Gentiles willed in their hearts and mind to do. All of what they did was expressed, in their character and conduct. The Jews, against the will of God lived the same type of sinful pagan social lives as they did and many of them expressed the same rebellious attitudes their counterparts did.

The Apostle Paul like Peter was moved by the Holy Spirit and wrote out God’s indictment on the whole world in Romans 1:21-32. Paul explained how God responded to their “indulgences”. (Lusts)

Romans 1:21-24
"Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, And changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and four footed beasts, and creeping things. “Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonor their own bodies between themselves:”

Note:
Here revealed in this passage the practical tendency toward paganism to unbelievers of Jesus Christ and the living of life under true Christian principles. Heathenism is not an innocent and harmless religious system, but in lifestyle and practice results in the most gross and shameless acts of moral and spiritual depravity. There is absolutely "nothing" harmless about any pagan religion. Many cult practices and beliefs show a gross disregard for moral decency; their followers worship in "Monotheism" (the worship of multiple idol gods) and their followers exhibit explicit immoral and unmoral behavior in the name of worship and offering sacrifices to their gods.

Paul said in the above passage because they were unwilling to retain Jehovah God in their knowledge, and chose to worship idols,
God gave them up. God turned them over to a reprobate mind.  This meant God either abandoned them altogether, or he ceased to restrain their lustful and insidious desires, and permitted them to act out their sentiments, and to manifest them in their life.

Understand this did not mean that God encouraged them to sin or endorsed them, any more than if we attempted, to restrain a headstrong youth from misbehaving, and when none of our effort would prevail, we’d leave him alone to act out his misbehaviors and do what he choose to do to his ruin. God simply stopped hindering their efforts and let their sinning become the catalyst for their ultimate ruin.

There are several important points implicated in this:

(1) There is the tendency of man to gravitate toward indulgence in these sins;
(2) There is an underlining tendency of idolatry was to promote them; and
(3) All that it took, for the people to desire to commit them, was for God to remove is hand of restraint on them, thus allowing them to follow the wicked devices and evil desires of their own heart  (
Psalms 81:12;  2 Thessalonians 2:10 and 12)

Paul expressed this while writing to the Jewish and Gentile Christians in Rome.. The above in comparison to what the Apostle Peter wrote to Hebrew and Gentile converts in the region of his ministry spoke to the same dilemma brought on by persecution to further emphasize to the reader of this lesion the imperative of totally distancing yourselves from the “former life” of living like a “heathen” and embracing fully the new life you now have in Christ Jesus.

Peter in review brought up another fact: the fact they had been guilty of excessive drunkenness

Multitudes of those early converts who became Christians had been drunkards, for intemperance abounded in all the pagan world, as well as revellings which meant feasting, revel; a carousing or merrymaking after supper, whereby the guests often run into the streets, and going through the city with torches, music, and songs in honor of Bacchus (Dionysus) All such noisy and boisterous processions that after their conversion experience now were completely inappropriate to the Christian believer of that day. (Romans 13:13)

Observe what Paul admonished the converts in Rome to do in response to the same thing:

“Let us behave decently, as in the daytime, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and debauchery, not in dissension and jealousy.  Rather, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not think about how to gratify the desires of the sinful nature.”

As converts in Jesus Christ, the Jews and Gentiles both were to avoid these also:

Banquetings: commonly known as “drinking parties”. These kinds of parties start with the act of drinking; then the “act” escalates to a drinking bout. Banquets of themselves aren’t forbidden. What makes a banquet forbidden in the eye of the Lord is the assembling together for the purpose of drinking alcoholic beverages.

It is improper for Christians to meet together anywhere for
the purpose of drinking especially if the consummation of alcoholic beverages are understood to be the main objective. It would be forbidden, to be in attendance on all those celebrations in which drinking toasts is understood to be an essential part of the festivities, and all those where hilarity and joyfulness are sought to be produced by the intoxicating bowl Such are not proper places for Christians.

Abominable idolatries- The fact that there were many who became Christians that were guilty of these before their conversion is clear from this passage. The fact that they were converted shows the power of the gospel, and also that we should not despair in regard to those who are indulging in these vices now. They appear to be almost hopeless, but we should remember even in today's society that many who became Christians when the gospel was first preached, and since then exemplified this character.
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                               Peter
“Wherein they think it strange that ye run not with them to the same excess of riot, speaking evil of you: Who shall give account to him that is ready to judge the quick and the dead.”

That is, the same people who were partners and accomplices in the indulging of your wicked vices now find it strange that you no longer associate with them. They don’t understand the reasons why you have left them. In their carnal debased mind, they see you now as abandoning what’s to them the “good” life of letting loose and letting go; partying to take the edge off in favor of chasing
“religious superstition”.

They see what you did as a strange and unaccountable thing you have done by giving up the “world’s pleasures”  to follow a course of life that seems to promise anything but happiness. They say you are crazy and delusional.

Well don’t feel bad about what they say about you.
Even Jesus’ brothers and sisters thought Jesus was” beside himself,"
( Mark 3:21), and more so, Governor Festus responded to Paul’s testimony of the Gospel  as madness. (Acts 26:24).

In truth, the people of the world  understand very little the reasons why those of us who are converts of Christ how the Gospel message has such an influence on us that we can abruptly  leave the circles of gaiety and vanity, and to give ourselves to the serious embracing of religion, especially embracing Christianity.
Peter went on to say:

They respond to your decision to change by labeling you as fools, enthusiasts, and fanatic. For those of us who have made the full commitment to Christ, here’s the reason your critics feel the way they do about what you did:

(1) They don’t appreciate the motives of God which were very  instrumental in influencing you to leave those wicked vices and separate and come out from among them and from the places you indulged in those things.

They believe there is nothing wrong with enjoying the vices of this secular world, vices they believe in indulgence make life cheerful. They don’t understand or yet know what it feels like to act under a deep sense of responsibility to God, or to consider their future in eternity. They live for themselves for the “now’ moments. They, like the Epicureans of Paul’s day seek happiness and pleasure as both the end and aim of life. They’re not accustomed to directing their mindset away from pleasure seeking to realize the truth about what happens to them after they die in this world. Many haven’t realized they must give in account the things they do in this life and stand before a holy God in judgment. They cannot appreciate the change in conduct of those who now begin to live and act for eternity, because they believe you should still believe as they believe and continue to do what they are still doing.

(2)
They do not see the guilt and folly of sinful indulgences yet.

They’re not convinced of the deep sinfulness of the human soul, and they believe that neither one of you should abandon this indulgences which in their mind is innocent. They don’t see why the people who have been so accustomed to involving themselves in these indulgences before their change would have a change of heart and opinion  and now regard these very things as sinful that they once considered to be harmless.

(3) From a personal belief standpoint, they don’t see the force or validity of the argument for pure religion.

They don’t share the same views concerning the importance of religious truth and the duty which Christians now have to Christ. So they continue to live and indulge. Many of them regard the Christians behavior and conduct as amiable weakness. Sometimes they regard it as superstition. Other times it’s viewed  as sheer folly, as madness, as sourness and misanthropy. In all respects they esteem it strange:

“For this cause was the gospel preached also to them that are dead, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit.”

For, for this reason, the gospel was preached to the dead that they might be judged. Conversely, for this cause was the Gospel preached to them that were dead; that they who live according to men in the flesh, may be condemned; but that they who live according to God in the Spirit, may live."

The people (Judaizers) judged them severely, and put them to death for their "new" religion; God gave them life, and saved them. By the one (Adam) they were condemned in the flesh-so far as pain, and sorrow, and death could be inflicted on the body; by the other (Jesus Christ) they were made to live in spirit-to be his, to live with him. Because of Christ, they would not be condemned. By Him they would be made to live-to have the true life. The gospel was preached to them in order that as far as God was concerned, as far as their relation to him was concerned, and as far as how he would deal with them, they might live no longer dead in spirit, but have spiritual life imparted to them by their testimony of Jesus; The result of this allows them to now live a life of holiness in this world, that they might live eternally with Christ in the world to come.

In one respect, as far as people were concerned, their embracing the gospel was followed by death; that is death to the way they were living in their sins and trespasses. In another respect, as far as God was concerned, it brought life in their souls, as contrasted with their body. In respect to living according to the flesh, they were put to death; in respect to their souls-their higher natures-they were made truly to live.

The premise or point raised in this verse is: in the trials which we endure on account of the Christian religion, we should remember the example of those of the past who have suffered for it, as well as why the gospel was preached to them initially. It was in a subordinate sense done that they might glorify God by dying a martyr's death. But in a higher sense, it was done that in this world and in the world to come, they might truly live. Even though the flesh might suffer the consequences of them embracing the gospel that was preached to them, the soul would live. In light of their example, as Christians, we should be willing to suffer in the flesh as they did, so we too may live with God (Christ) forever.

"But the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer."

This verse is designed to support and encourage them (and us) in our persecutions and trials. This verse was also designed to excite them (and us) to lead a holy life, with the assurance that the end of all things was drawing near. Peter was referring   to the coming judgment from Christ at His second coming. So this refers to the end of the world (age), Therefore be serious; thoughtful and  considerate. Let a fact of so much importance make a solemn impression on your mind, and preserve you from frivolity, levity, and vanity. Be on the lookout for the end of all things in such a way as to lead you to embrace all proper opportunities for prayer.
Matt 26:39 Matt 26:41.

The important truth, then, taught by this passage is, "that the nearing approach, of the end of all things should make us serious and prayerful."

 (1) This is true of all things of the winding up of the affairs of this world. The end of the world is constantly drawing nearer and nearer, day by day. No one can tell how soon it will occur. Jesus said no man knows the day nor the hour the Son of Man Comes. The period is wisely hidden from the knowledge of all people,(
Matthew 24:36; Acts 1:7,) among other reasons, in order that we may be always ready. No man can tell certainly at what time it will come. No man can demonstrate that it may not come at any moment. Everywhere in the Scriptures it is represented that it will come at an unexpected hour, as a thief in the night, and when the mass of people shall be slumbering in false security.(Matthew 24:37-39,42-43; 1 Thessalonians 5:2; Luke 21:34.)

(2) It is near in relation to each one of us. The day of our death cannot be far in the distant. It may be very near. The very next thing that we just might do, may be to lie down and die. It is proper that having knowledge of such a nearness of the end of all things should lead us to be serious, and to pray.

 (a) To be serious because the end of all things, in regard to us, is a most important event. It closes our probation. It fixes our character. It seals up our destiny. It makes all ever onward in character and doom unchangeable.

(b) We are so made as to be serious in view of such events. God has so constituted the mind, that when we lose property, health, or friends; when we look into a grave, or are beset with dangers; when we are in the room of the dying or the dead, we are serious and thoughtful. It is unnatural not to be so. Levity and frivolity on such occasions are as contrary to all the finer and better feelings of our nature as they are to the precepts of the Bible.

(c) There are advantages in seriousness of mind. It enables us to take better views of things
(Ecclesiastes 7:2-3) A calm, sober, sedate mind is the best way for a contemplation of truth, and for looking at things as they are, to be watchful unto prayer. People naturally pray when they suppose that the end of all things is coming. It is proper to do it.

Death is an important event. Hebrews 9:27 declares: "As it is appointed unto men once to die and after death judgment so Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many. To those who eagerly wait for Him He will appear a second time, apart from sin, for salvation."

In anticipation of such an certain and life changing event, we should pray. Who can help us then but God? Who can conduct us through the dark valley but he? Who can save us amidst the wrecks and ruins of the universe but he? Who can dissipate our fears, and make us calm amidst the convulsions of dissolving nature, but God? As that event, therefore, may come upon us at any hour, it should lead us to constant prayer; and the more so because, when it comes, we may be in no state of mind to pray. The position in which we should feel most appropriate to be found in when the “Messenger” of death should find us, would be in prayer.

The Next thing Peter said to them was:

“And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves: for charity shall cover the multitude of sins”.

More than all things else have fervent (earnest) charity (love) among yourselves! You should have warm, ardent love toward each other. On the nature of charity, The word  "fervent," means properly extended; then intent, earnest, fervent.(1 Corinthians 13:1) “For charity (love) shall cover the multitude of sins”.

When you show love toward one to another, that love will cover or hide a great many imperfections in someone else so much, you will not notice any of them. The following passage is quoted from
Proverbs 10:12: "Love covers all sins." For the truth of it we have only to appeal to the experience of everyone: True love toward one another makes us kind to their imperfections. It makes us charitable toward their faults, and often blind even to the existence of any faults. We would not see the imperfections of those whom we love; and our attachment for what we esteem to be their real qualities, makes us insensible to their errors. If we love them we are ready to cover over their faults, even those which we may see in them.

“Use hospitality one to another without grudging”. As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.
We are to show hospitality toward each other "without murmurs; that is, without complaining of the hardship caused by doing it if any; or of the time spent, the expense paid, and the trouble (inconvenience) required in doing it. It is that we are to do it without murmuring or complaining. It greatly enhances the value of hospitality, that it be done on our part with cheerfulness. One of the duties involved in it is to make a guest happy; and this can be done in no other way than by showing him that he is welcome.

Hospitality is a gift render to us by the Holy Spirit. In truth, any gift the Holy Spirit endows upon the believer is designed to aid us in doing good things for and to others.
It does not refer here particularly to the ministry of the word-though it is applicable to that, and includes that-but to all the gifts and graces by which we can contribute to the welfare of others. All this is regarded as a gift, or charisma, of God. It is not owing to ourselves, but is to be credited to Him. Even so minister the same one to another. In other words, in anything by which you can share that will benefit another. Regard what you have and they have not as a gift bestowed upon you by God for the common good, and be ready to impart it as the needs of ethers require.

The word "minister" here ‎ refers to any kind of ministering, whether by counsel, by advice, by the supply of the needs of the poor, even preaching. It has here no reference to any one of these exclusively; but means, that in whatever God has favored us more than others, we should be ready to minister to their needs
. (2 Timothy 1:18; 2 Corinthians 3:8; 8:19-20).

“Regard yourselves as the stewards of God; as having been appointed by him to do this work for him, and entrusted by him with what is needful to benefit others”.
The grace or favor of God evinced in many ways, or by a variety of gifts. His favors are not confined to one single thing; as, for example, to talent for doing good by preaching; but are extended to a great many things by which we may do good to others-influence, property, reputation, wisdom, experience. All these are to be regarded as his gifts; all to be employed in doing good things to and for others as we have opportunity. The Lord intends to do good things for them, but the means He employs to do it is through you and I. God has entrusted to all of His servants as a stewards what he designed to confer on them. This is in respect to any special endowments of talent, property, or grace, which we may have received from God. (1 Corinthians 4:1-2 Luke 16:1-2 Luke 16:8.)

“If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God; if any man minister, let him do it as of the ability which God giveth: that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom be praise and dominion forever and ever. Amen”.
This verse is in reference to the minister/teacher , referring here particularly to the office of the ministry.
Let him (the minister) speak as the oracles of God, in accordance with the truth which God has revealed, as endowed by the Holy Spirit to speak the oracles of God with an impressive sense of the responsibility of delivering a message from him. The “oracles” of God refers to message uttered by God in-a divine communication a revelation unknown by man spoken by God now revealed to man by God’s ministers. Romans 3:2, Hebrews 5:12

Every minister should "minister according  of the ability which God giveth,". Every ability given to those of us who minister has limits in what they are capable of doing, yet we are to maximize the abilities the Lord endows us with. We are to use each gift to its capacity.

The word “minister” also may refer to any aid which we render to others in the church, as distributing alms, attending on the sick, etc. (Romans 12:7-8). This is the limit of all our obligations. No one is bound to go beyond his ability; everyone is required to come up to it (Mark 14:8; Luke 17:10.)

That God in all things may be glorified…
That God may be honored by our doing all the good we can to render aid to others, through Jesus Christ and showing the power of his religion. (
1 Corinthians 10:31.) The apostle says that in all things God is to be glorified by us, and then adds in this doxology that he is worthy to be thus honored. (Revelation 1:6; 2 Timothy 4:18.)

Picture
Hebrews 12:1-11
Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us,  looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
The Discipline of God
(Cross Reference Proverbs 3:11,12)
For consider Him who endured such hostility from sinners against Himself, lest you become weary and discouraged in your souls.You have not yet resisted to bloodshed, striving against sin. And you have forgotten the exhortation which speaks to you as to sons: "My son, do not despise the chastening of the Lord, Nor be discouraged when you are rebuked by Him;
For whom the Lord loves He chastens, And scourges every son whom He receives."If you endure chastening, God deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom a father does not chasten?  But if you are without chastening, of which all have become partakers, then you are illegitimate and not sons. Furthermore, we have had human fathers who corrected us, and we paid them respect. Shall we not much more readily be in subjection to the Father of spirits and live? For they indeed for a few days chastened us as seemed best to them, but He for our profit, that we may be partakers of His holiness    (NKJV)

Hebrews 12: 1-10: How to Run the Race called Life"
(Sermon text emphasis: Hebrews 12: 1-2)

Introduction: Preparation to run the race called Life:

We have been given a great “life illustration” lesson from many of the sport athletes that compete in track and field in how they prepare themselves before they run in a race or compete in any field event.
Here’s what you will notice: Even though all athletes should and some athletes don’t properly train, those that do take their craft so serious that as a integral part of their daily training, they careful avoid encumbering themselves with any type of unnecessary training regiments, any foods, non-nutritional foods, foods that could make them feel sluggish or nauseated at race time, creating an extra burden on digestion an elimination or surround themselves socially with people, groupies and socialites that create unneeded distractions, because come race time, any one of these 3 scenarios ultimately could either cost them the race or cause them not finish the race.

Their seriousness even applies to what running attire they actually wear in the race. When they are running in an actual race…they’re careful as the type of garment and material constitution of the garment they run in on race day. They want to make sure that their on track attire is made of a
“spandex type” material that hugs close to their body and glides through the wind creating near zero wind resistance and track shoes with cleats are made to stabilize their feet with each stride they take and won’t impede their ability to run or jump hurdles at maximum speed on the track in a race or aid them in getting the added thrust to throw a javelin, a shot put or discus.

In other words, they do all they know to do to give themselves the best competitive edge, to make sure in every way to remove whatever or whoever would be a burden, an impediment or a hindrance in running their best race or giving their all in the field events because they know the ultimate goal is to come away with the prize.

Well, when we apply all these same athletic principles to our Christian journey, it becomes crystal clear that in order to finish this race and endure it sometimes grueling cross country hardships to the end, we need do all we can to remove anything and everything, cut back on some things and completely cut out a lot of things even down to eliminating some irritating disruptive and distracting people who by their behaviors are doing all they can to hinder and obstruct your progress of spiritual growth on this Christian race course. I don’t care how good he or she looks or how smooth he or she walks or talks, whoop de doo about the kind of designer clothes he or she wears or even down to the most alluring seductive fragrance they might like to wear… you need to move the human hindrances  out of the way because, there are some people that fit these categories, the devil put in your life…and though the “eye candy” looks good and smells good and dresses good, talk with a seductive swoon, they are there to hinder you…to block you…to seduce you…to derail you…to cause you to lose the race or not finish the race because when it comes to running the race called life, they are an impediment in your efforts to win the crown of life.

This Life Is a Race
Maybe you haven’t figured it out by now, but I come to tell you the life we live day by day is a race. The Bible says is a race of endurance.  It is an endurance race because it doesn’t matter “fleet of foot” (how fast you are)….it’s not dependent on your” muscular definition”; meaning it doesn’t matter how strong you are.: It’s important that you have endurance, (staying power) and second that you “finish the course” power. (that is, do all you can to finish this race) Then it a race against time because though it’s not predicated upon how fast of foot you are, you still need to be taught to number your days so you can apply them all unto wisdom. You got to be determined. You have to have a made up mind. You can’t stand around wasting your time…You got to keep on running for Jesus, everyday of your life. That means you got to have heaven on your mind…
.

There are 2 Track Clubs:      One “HOLY”… One “WICKED”

There are 2 track clubs with runners in this race.  One track club represents everything that is evil, immoral and unmoral, perverse, abominable, vile and wicked. It’s running philosophy is not shaped by flesh and blood but is shaped by powers and principalities, rulers of darkness and wicked spirits. This track club is managed and owned by Satan. His staff of evil assistant coaches  are fallen angels called demons. He runs his track club under the motto of “walking up and down …going to and fro…in the earth…seeking whom we may devour”.

Satan seeks to unseat the Almighty… be like the most high, to be worshipped in the earth as god. but when God heard the wicked words spoke in Satan’s heart….god’s response slammed the door on a satanic pipe dream because God declared in
Isaiah 14:15  “Yet thou shall be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit”. And in Isaiah 14:19-20, God added this crushing blow to Satan’s plans: “But thou art cast out of thy grave like an abominable branch, and as the raiment of those that are slain, thrust through with a sword, that go down to the stones of the pit; as a carcase trodden under feet. Thou shall not be joined with them in burial, because thou hast destroyed thy land, and slain thy people: the seed of evildoers shall never be renowned”.

Now the Satanic Track Club already know they can’t win, and God already declares in several places in the Bible that there is absolutely no way they will win. The demons are to be tormented eternally in the end. In Revelation 20:10, Satan is to be thrown alive in the Lake of fire of fire and brimstone to join the Antichrist and the False Prophet who’ll already be there to be tormented for all of eternity. so their real purpose for running is to do all they can to trip you up and keep you from the prize of eternal life at the end of this life by either coaxing you to run in his track club or cause you to stumble and fall and frustrate you enough that you quit running and quit God’s track team and bow out of the Christian race.

God’s Track Club: A Track Club of “Holiness”

Now this second track club, is the one I run for and should be the one I hope you are running for. This club has “Triune” ownership, organized by Jesus Christ. It’s built on the “ROCK” of FAITH and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.  He is assisted by both an all powerful strength and training coach called the Holy Spirit. Our special training manual is the Holy Bible and we are privileged to be assisted by great group of special assistances trainers along the way called angels. Jesus runs HIS track club under this motto.
“The enemy comes but to steal, kill and destroy…but “I came that they might have life and have that more abundantly”.

This race is a paradox… The race of Life is that one race everybody has to run and you must decide who will you run for and you do have to make a choice You can’t remain neutral because neutrality is the same as being Lukewarm and that will get you spewed out of the mouth of God.

The race of life is a marathon cross-country and an uphill journey full of hills and valleys and plateaus that started the day you were born.  There are many trials and tribulations we face while we run in this race. There are burdens we have to carry and burdens and bondages…weights and sins we have to shed and throw off while we are running down the track of time.

The Book of Ecclesiastes in its 3rd chapter even tells us this race of life is an all seasonal race because there are “seasons” and  “times” for everything under the sun in this life race. There are sick periods.. healthy periods and rest periods.. sweat periods …crying and grieving periods.  But regardless of what time it might be or what season or period you might be in …we must run this life race all the way to the end… we must have endurance because it’s the kind of race that if you run it for Jesus and run it all the way to the end in HIM, and finish in HIM…you are declared the winner and there is a crown waiting on you.  Now when you run… you have to have a certain attitude…a spiritual swagger….it’s the same attitude the Apostle Paul declared to Timothy at the end of running his race: Paul said: I’m ready to be offered up and the time of my departure is at hand:  I fought a good fight….I finished my course …and I kept the faith as a result there is a crown of righteousness laid up for me which the Lord….the righteous judge shall give me in that day….

False Notions Concerning Running Life’s Race:
We have been given a whole lot of false notions about why we run this race and now we must dispel any false notions concerning how we run this life race.

This is not a race that we run against each other.
I’m not running against you. It’s not a race you run against me. We aren’t in competition with one other like the world is because we are all supposed to be members on the same track club. It’s a race where we are our brother’s keeper. We are in partnership and we are admonished to and have promised to help each other to finish the race.

Here’s the other thing:  to a certain extent…it a dual purpose race because we have a double purpose in life.
In one sense, we are part of a relay team and we race as a part of God’ story and plan for all of mankind to effect His total purpose for this world. What do I mean?   This is what I mean. As servants of the Most High God we are required as ministers, teachers, and steward of the Word of to pass the baton of Salvation and our testimony in Jesus Christ all over the world. We have a Christian responsibility from generation to generation to share the Christian Faith the next generation, to train up our children the way they should go in the Lord that when they become older, they won’t depart from the way.  In our “Christian Code of Conduct “that code that governs the overall behavior of all members of God’s church, the Bible clearly tells us how we are to help and not hinder each other while we run in the race of life. Maybe you have heard of this Code of conduct: It goes by the name of the Church’s Covenant.

First, we have corporate communion with Christ and each other: the  code says: “Having been led by the Spirit of God to receive the Lord Jesus Christ as our Savior and having been baptized in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost, we do now in the presence of God, angels and this assembly most solemnly and joyfully enter into covenant with one another as one body in Christ”.

Second, we have pledged to walk together  in unity, not divided, and the only way we can unify and walk together is with the aid of the Holy Spirit….

Third, we all made the same promise to give support and to make sure the institution church moves in the direction Jesus intended it to move. “We pledged we’ll strive together for the advancement of the church in knowledge… holiness… and comfort …. to promote its prosperity and spirituality and to sustain its worship…. ordinances… disciplines and doctrines… We pledged to contribute cheerfully and regularly to the support of the ministry….the expenses of the church….the relief of the poor…and to spread the gospel to all nations”…

Fourth, We made a promise to maintain Christian integrity in our walk and in our conduct in the church and in the community. This is what we said. “We further engage to walk circumspectfully in the world…To be just in our dealings….faithful in our engagements….and exemplary in or deportment…To avoid all tattling, backbiting, and excessive anger..We promise to abstain from the sale of and the use of intoxicating drinks as beverages, sexual immorality of any kind and have a zeal to advance the kingdom of our Savior”…

Fifth, we made the promise to take care of one another:
“
We promised to watch over one another in brotherly love….to remember each other in prayer….to aid each other in sickness and distress…to cultivate Christian sympathy in our courtesy and in the way we speak…We vow to be slow to take offense…but always be ready to reconcile our differences with one another and always be mindful of the rules our savior gave us and abide by them without delay….and then when we have to relocate to another place….we promise to join continue to run the race on that church’s track team for Jesus to continue to carry out the spirit of the covenant and the principles of God’s Holy Word”..

And every time we are reminded of what we promised the Lord as part of His Evangelistic Track Club, it causes us to do some soul searching and before we could go on, we had to confess un-confessed sins and tell the Lord: “Sorrowful and with meekness of heart, we confess our pass sins, and we pray for grace and strength to keep these our “holy” vows…In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ and for His sake we pray…AMEM”…

Now in order to really understand the importance of running the race of life in Christ Jesus …by faith and in discipline by the Holy Ghost you must also know that the devil and all of his demons are doing all they can to knock you out of the race.

Our adversary uses many tricks and much distortion fueled by lies and deceit to make you think the Lord is not really on our side. The devil sets up traps and ambushes and is always lurking, waiting to strike us down when we least expect an attack.
We need to know that God has given us several fool proof weapons to conquer to powers of darkness’s influence in our lives… Weapons that help us endure whatever trials and afflictions that come our way…Weapons to conquer whatever habits that taints our testimony and to give us that added spiritual kick from the Holy Spirit to run and not be weary to walk and not faint and to be renewed when the storms of life are raging: The first remedy is having a consistent and powerful prayer life

Pray and Pray without ceasing:
Prayer is the communication link from heaven to you.
God’s line is never busy whenever you need Him all you got to do is get down on your knees and cry out to the Lord Someone said it this way: Father I stretch my hands to thee…No other help I know….If thou withdraw thy self from…..where shall I go?  Somebody else said :  Operator, long distance, give me Jesus on the line… call Him up….Call Him up… and tell Him what you want call Him up….Call Him up… and tell Him what you want ! . Another song writer said the reason you call HIM is
because Prayer will fix it for you for God knows just what to do. And whenever you pray and let God have HIS way…Prayer will fix it for you.

When you pray, you got to know how to pray. Here’s how you pray
….And when you pray, pray to the God the Father in Jesus name. When you pray…. Pray without ceasing and always be instantaneous to pray.

Your praying should be like your breathing. Just as sure as you are breathing…you ought to be praying. Why you may ask? Consider the following….. If you hold your breath long enough because you decided to stop breathing… in a very short time… you will become woozy and eventually you will pass out…. The same is true with your prayer life in the same sense: It’s been said little prayer…little power……more prayer… more power….much prayer….you have much power….consistent prayer….. consistent power….but where there is No prayer……there is no power.

Here’s the point:
If you stop praying, sooner or later you will become spiritually weak and begin to pass out under the tremendous weight of the trials and tribulations you face day by day and eventually you become too weak to fight the good fight of faith in Christ Jesus and do exactly what the devil wants you to do…give in to him and give up on God.

When you pray without ceasing and anchor your faith in the blessed assurance that God is always present, even when it doesn’t feel like he's not there... You’re resting in the assurance that the LORD does both hears and will answer your prayer request.

3 of the quintessential piece of the Christian armor is the sword of the Spirit – The Word of God….the Shield of Faith that has the ability to quench all the fiery dots of the wicked…..and Persistent Prayer…

People of God, you got everything in the “Armor of God “you need to defeat the wiles of the Devil. You are secured in salvation by the Helmet of Salvation. You are covered in God’s righteousness by the breastplate…..your loins are strapped in by the Lord by the having on the belt of truth….Your offensive and defensive weapons are the Sword of the Spirit, the Shield of Faith and Prayer. And your path is governed by having your feet shodded by the preparation of the Gospel of Peace.

This means in every step you take in this race called life, all you got to do is keep leaning on the Lord.  You can be assured through prayer that the Lord’s love and presence is always there…Be assured that every part of the armor will work in your favor and for your good and according to
Romans 8:38, you are persuaded that nothing…..absolutely nothing shall be able to separate you from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus.

Here’s what you do: Hebrews 12:1-2 says.  In the “A” part of the first verse it says: “Let us lay aside every weight”.

Repent: Get rid of “Excessive Weight” and “Set back Sinning”

You have to get rid of all excessive baggage you carry that don’t benefit you in the long run. There are a whole lot of things you just think you have;  those things for
“ social” security and elevated  “social” status..These are the the things that cause you to sin, to fall short, to fall by the wayside, to abandon your faith and be at odds with God .1 John 1:9 told us to repent of any known sin in our lives that strain our relationship with God. And right about here, I can hear some naïve person trying to be smart ask the question Preacher, what known sins would that be? You know what sin that would be…The sin you are engaged in currently engaged in but don’t want to let go. Well, let me put it this way. It varies from person to person because all of us aren’t guilty of doing the same thing, yet Romans 3:23 declares all of us have sinned and come short of the glory of God.

Now, let me get specific: the bible talks about a sin that is unto death and sins that are not unto death, yet the wages of all sin is death. So the best answer to give you is…. No matter how little or bad you may think a sin might be or how big and bad a sin may be…..just know that all sin put a strain on our relationship with God.

There are many situations the devil creates and attacks us with that brings a heaviness (weight) a burden that’s design to derail you from your destiny in Christ Jesus: wicked things…immoral and unmoral things that taxes your life in every way: sinful behaviors that taxes your finances….taxes your marital relationship….taxes your friendships , even taxing your health…taxes your relationship with God, especially when you pray for God to deliver you out of an excruciating situation and He has you to wait and wait and wait and wait and even now you are still waiting…. Even while you are waiting… you have to find that way to lay aside whatever emotional and spiritual weight the enemy drops on your life. How do I do it you ask?

Well…
Now we must not forget the only reason they are devilish people is because, they still display demonic behaviors and attitudes that are sinful and destructive. You have accepted Jesus gift of salvation and they haven't yet.. so your motivation for life is Jesus Christ. Their motivation  for life are the cares of this world. Before our deliverance in Jesus Christ, we did some of the same things too. In fact the truth is we are still a work in progress and the Lord is constantly cleaning us up, changing our attitude and redirecting our walk  so we can get up out of the pit of life and press toward the palace of life in Christ Jesus. We ain’t there yet…but we are pressing on the upward way…new height we gain each and every day…still praying as we are homeward bound asking God to plant our feet on higher ground…

Every day we all still fight character flaws and sinful behaviors. That why for the cause of Christ and the race we run, we must do what Paul did die daily to the sins of the flesh and walk everyday guided by the Holy Spirit…and stop judging one another. God is the only righteous judge there is. We all came from the dust of the ground and God had to breathe in each one of us the breath of life for all of us to become a living soul. So why do some people get off acting like judges when every once in a while all of our dust will  kick up…..God has to work in us and on us to keep the dust of our life down by wetting the dust in our lives with the cleansing water of the  Living WORD of God!

I can’t judge you and you can’t judge me because these flaws and behaviors we fight that try to taint our Christian identity aren’t the same thing in everybody.. In some of us it may be pride; in some of us,
vanity; in some of us worldliness; in some of us compulsive lying in someone else it’s Kleptomania. It’s a bad case of “stick fingers” because you can’t keep your hands off other people’s property and let’s not forget some of us are thugnacious and “bully-fied” …this speaks to that man or woman even that child in every school or in our community and in the church that’s so demonically influenced they exemplify a violent and almost ungovernable temper….and always want to fight somebody else or bully some else to prove how much of a bigger person they want you to believe they are…

The gambit runs deep: corrupt imagination in one; in another person a heavy, leaden, insensible heart; in someone else a cultish behavior that causes you to form improper and unholy attachment to other people and other things. Whatever your sin may be, or wherever we might be on the ledger and in this life race we are exhorted to lay that weight aside. We are to let go of anything …everything and everybody which prevent our making the highest possible attainment in the divine life. A whole lot of us would be farther along on the journey and make so much more progress if we simply shed ourselves of the excessive weights of life.

The “B” part of that same verse talks about “the” besetting  sin: "
And the sin which doth so easily beset us
As long as we are here on earth and we are around unsaved people we have to fight off sin that are always near us… always around us always… hanging on us and interweaved into our daily lives because of our interaction with everybody else. You don’t have to go looking for trouble. If you are a child of God and trying to live right….trouble comes looking for you! Sometimes it the drama that comes from other people hanging around you. Other  times….it’s the kind of sins that causes you to become afflicted…..puts your life in grave danger so it is safe to say that besetting sins are those things full of trouble, sin which puts you and I in harms way. Many scholars of yesteryear believed it to mean "the” sin which especially winds around us, and hinders our course. The truth is sin is that great hindrance to running the race.

Finally: “Run The Race of Life With Patience and Looking To Jesus for All of Our Need: He’s the “Author” and “Finisher” of Our faith”
There are four things we can do in patiently waiting on Jesus to come to our rescue

1.     Praise HIM (Jesus) because He is the source of all our strength and security. HIS forgiveness frees us from any accusation Satan makes to God concerning us. When you pray, ask God for a sharpened discernment and wisdom, as you invite the Holy Spirit to take full control over all circumstances you are faced with and be your guide.

2.
Realize your position in Jesus Christ.
According to Ephesians 2:6, we are “spiritually seated" in the heavenly places with Jesus Christ. This means in a sense, we are looking down on the principalities, powers in the heavenly places; dark rulers and all wicked spirits. This should give you the confidence to be “strong in the Lord” and in the power of his might. (Ephesians 6:10) Remember when we resist the Devil, we are resisting in a strength beyond our natural strength and according to Hebrews 1:14, there are mighty angels, assigned to minister to you and assist you in conquering the wiles of the Devil.

3.
Rely on the “omnipotent  power “in Jesus Name.
According
to Philippians 2:9-11,demons tremble in fear at the calling on the name of Jesus. He has been given a name that is above all names that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus is Lord to the glory of God the Father. Rely on the power of Jesus’ atoning blood. (Colossians 1:13-20; Revelation 12:11) The blood  of Jesus covers each believing convert and is an awesome weapon against Satan. Then believe and expect the Holy Spirit of Truth will manifest himself as God’s illuminator that searches out darkness and expose each lies spoken by Satan. When you were saved, the Holy Spirit took residence within your soul. It is the Holy Spirit that will guide you to all truth concerning Jesus Christ and how to navigate the race we run in life for Christ.

4.
Close the Door that caused the Opposition.
Moral compromise, deception, and an exploitation of a person’s vulnerability have been found to be the primary “doors” Satan and people use to influence others to fall from grace through sin. It’s imperative that once you have been overtaken in a fault, you quickly repent and be reconciled to God. 1 John 3:9 says: If you confess your sins, God is just and able to forgive you of your sins and cleanse you from all unrighteousness". After repentance,  you must denounce every action that led to that sin and ask God to seal that door shut by cleansing you from that act of unrighteousness. Simply put, take back what the devil stole from you.

“Finally look unto Jesus He’s the "author" and "finisher" of our faith”
Look to the finished work of redemption Jesus did when He was crucified and hung on the cross at Golgotha. it was there He bore all of our sin and along with it forgiveness and a door of reconciliation towards Jehovah God the Father. Believe in HIM and trust HIM to redeem and restore you. How do you run the race called life? Ask the Savior to help you. Ask  HIM to comfort, strengthen, and keep you. HE is willing to aid you and HE will carry you through!

"Our Inheritance Through Christ's Blood"

Therefore, laying aside all malice, all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and all evil speaking, as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby,  if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is gracious.
The Chosen Stone and His Chosen People
Coming to Him as to a living stone, rejected indeed by men, but chosen by God and precious, you also, as living stones, are being built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. Therefore it is also contained in the Scripture, Behold, I lay in Zion A chief cornerstone, elect, precious, And he who believes on Him will by no means be put to shame." Therefore, to you who believe, He is precious; but to those who are disobedient, "The stone which the builders rejected Has become the chief cornerstone," and "A stone of stumbling And a rock of offense. "They stumble, being disobedient to the word, to which they also were appointed. But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; who once were not a people but are now the people of God, who had not obtained mercy but now have obtained mercy".

Living Before the World
"Beloved, I beg you as sojourners and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts which war against the soul, having your conduct honorable among the Gentiles, that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may, by your good works which they observe, glorify God in the day of visitation".

Submission to Government(cf. Romans 13:1-5)
Therefore submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord's sake, whether to the king as supreme, or to governors, as to those who are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers and for the praise of those who do good. For this is the will of God, that by doing good you may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men  as free, yet not using liberty as a cloak for vice, but as bondservants of God. Honor all people. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the king.

Submission to Masters  (Isaiah 53:7-9)
Servants, be submissive to your masters with all fear, not only to the good and gentle, but also to the harsh. For this is commendable, if because of conscience toward God one endures grief, suffering wrongfully For what credit is it if, when you are beaten for your faults, you take it patiently? But when you do good and suffer, if you take it patiently, this is commendable before God. For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that you should follow His steps: "Who committed no sin, Nor was deceit found in His mouth"; who, when He was reviled, did not revile in return; when He suffered, He did not threaten, but committed Himself to Him who judges righteously; who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness by whose stripes you were healed.  For you were like sheep going astray, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls. (NKJV)

What Bible Study Series: Biblical Exposition on 1 Peter 2: 1-23 A Study Series on Faith: “Having An Enduring Faith:”  “Trusting God in Every Circumstance of Life”

Introduction:
In the second part of this series on faith, we are going to examine the many ways how to resurrect a person’s faith that has been severely shaken by the many and varied types of intense trials they’ve faced in this life. And we will talk in detail about the importance of having a faith that is active and endures the trials of a Christian’s life. There are times when our faith tends to waver, especially after a prolonged period of suffering and seemingly, no relief is anywhere in site. Let’s  take a quick at Job's situation.

Job said in Job 14:14:
“If a man die, shall he live again? all the days of my appointed time will I wait, till my change come.
Here’s a man that was going through intense and prolonged suffering of a great magnitude. The devil was given permission by God to test and afflict Job in every area of his life. Without taking his life because God prohibited him from doing so, Satan had caused the death of Job’s 10 children. He had caused the destruction and seizure of Jobs cattle and field workers, and the estrangement of Job’s wife, yet, up to this point in the first assault, Job still didn’t curse God nor denounce his relationship with the Almighty. Being proved a lie the first time, the devil asked for another shot at Job, this time attacking Job’s health with puss running boils all over his body. So excruciating was the pain and misery of these boils, Job took broken pot sheds and scraped the running puss off his body and sat on an ash pile. Even the dogs licking his sores granted him some form of relief.

So in the midst of this persecution from the devil, coupled with the constant criticism and scathing accusations from the mouths of 3 men who were “friends” of his, Job makes this bold statement. Job declared: “All the days of my appointed time, I will wait until my change come.” Of course you know how this story ends; Job was completely healed and all that was taken in this tremendous trial was completely restored. At some point, found in
Job 38, God began His intervention in Job’s situation and by the end of Job 42, we see a different Job; a fully restored Job dying at a ripe old age. (full of days)

Job exemplified an “enduring faith”. Not knowing when or where God would bring an end to his trial and persecution, Job just believed that God would, so he maintained his innocence, and held to his faith. Job’s faith wavered at times to the point that he wished that he was never born and in other instances that God would take his life.
That is, how God expects us to live each day of our lives in obedience to the Word of God, having a faith that endures the hardships and trials we encounter throughout the course of our lives. An “enduring faith” is a “no matter what happens, I will trust in the Lord faith”. When we hold on to the end we trust and believe that God rewards faithfulness in our enduring the hardships of the Christian walk.

An Enduring Faith Requires an “Enduring Attitude”        1 Peter 2:1-3
“Therefore, laying aside all malice, all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and all evil speaking, as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word,  that you may grow thereby, if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is gracious.”
To endure resistance of any kind, you have to have the right attitude toward the principles, precepts and truth found in the Word of God. Jesus told us we would experience tribulations in our lives, but to be of good cheer, HE has overcome to world.

It has been said that a faith that has not been tested in reality isn't faith at all. There are 3 key behaviors that are produced whenever our faith is tested. The first is patience. Patience is necessary because there is a waiting period between labor and reward. The second is endurance. Endurance is needed because between labor and reward, the devil attempts to ambush you and  weaken your faith in the promises of God. He launches attack after attack in a blatant attempt to cause you to doubt the WORD and promises of God and from believing God rewards those that diligently seek him. It's in the endurance phase of faith testing where we learn valuable lessons about life, ourselves, and the ways God operates in and outside the life of both believers and non-believers.

Endurance is more than a “mindset”. It’s also a “outward” behavior that’s the result of an inward change of getting rid of 5 detrimental attitudes within that hinders us from both being in total submission to the Lord as well as submitting to God sanction authorities, especially when they do not operate in godly principles but live and operate out of a satanic attitude towards you as a child of God. Endurance is that part of the Sanctification Process is designed to both cleanse the Christian of the influence of the power of SIN and fill them with the holiness and righteousness of Jehovah (Jesus).

In order to have the ability to submit to all authority yet stand against those areas where their rules and actions run contrary to the Word  of God and His principles, these 5 things that are needed daily to be in the process of dismantlement from our character in order to truly “SUBMIT” to every authority. For the Cause of Christ, the Apostle Paul said he died daily, that is, he yielded and let the will of God be done in him and through him, rather than act on his own accord and do things his way.
The Apostle Peter in the 1st verse shares with us those 5 following “behaviors” (attitudes) that need to die everyday in order to fully be in submission: for the “Cause” of Christ..

All Malice – Malice by definition is having extreme enmity of heart, ill-will, resulting in a disposition to injure someone without cause.Malice is “evil” done from mere personal gratification, or from a spirit of revenge. A person that has malice in their heart get some degree of sick pleasure out of deliberately hurting an innocent person and causing injure or harm to that person. Malice is a deadly behavior that reveal the venom in the heart of a person who's heart is not right before God. As a result, we are admonished in Colossians 3:8 to do the following:
“ But now you must rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips”.

All guile- Guile is describes as a person that’s deceitful in every way that does things with a hidden agenda.
Romans 1:29 gives us a detail description of what constitutes “guile”:  Guile embodies many other wicked behaviors Guile is a behavior found in people who are full of mischief: The “mischievous” person will exemplify the following wicked behaviors:

The Bible says they will also be
filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers,. Here are the definitions of each behavior

Unrighteousness- The promotion of injustices, or iniquity in general These injustices and iniquities include the following offenses:.

Fornication- Engaging in sexual intercourse outside of the bonds of a marital relationship. This was a common and almost universal sin among the ancients, and is rampart in this modern society among people who want to live sexually open lives having multiple partners and having no regard for the chastity God requires for unmarried people. The word applies to all illicit sexual intercourse. This was a common crime among the ancient pagans. This immoral act was found prevalent even among the most learned and influential men and women.

Wickedness- Wickedness, as it is applied here implies a desire of injuring others or, as we should express it, “malice”. It is the depravity and obliquity of mind which strives to produce injury on others.

Covetousness- Defined as the desire of obtaining what belongs to others. This vice is common in the world; but it would be particularly so where the other vices enumerated here abounded, and people were desirous of luxury, and the gratification of their senses. Rome was particularly desirous of the wealth of other nations, and hence, its extended wars, and the various evils of rapine and conquest.

Licentiousness- Defined as either evil in general or rather the constant act of doing evil things to others.

Full of envy- This is the emotional pain, uneasiness, mortification, or discontent, triggered by seeing another person’s prosperity. Because it fosters in the mind of the envious person, it is usually accompanied with some degree of hatred or malignity. Left unchecked, the envious person will develop a desire to and actually make an effort to depreciate (slander) the person and their gifts or accomplishments, deriving pleasure in seeing them depressed". Because the Bible revealed that the heart of an unregenerate man is full of evil desires and intentions, it’s an integral part of the nature of their heart to harbor ill will against anyone who possesses gifts, talents, beauty, etc.
.
Murder- Murder is the taking of another human life by “premeditated malice.”  act of premeditation is necessary to constitute murder now, but the word used here also includes all manslaughter, or taking human life, except when the death of another occurs as the punishment of crime It has prevailed in all communities, but it was particularly prevalent in Rome.

Debate- The word debate originally meant contention, strife, altercation,  with anger and heated zeal. Apostle Paul describes it in Romans 13:13-14 “deeds” of darkness; behaviors that people delve in at night time; orgies, drunkeness, sexual immorality, debauchery, dissensions and jealousies, satisfying the desires of sinful flesh. The contentions and behaviors that bring forth strife would be the results of that person(s) being full of malice and being guilty of covetousness.

Deceit- Deceit is the act of perpetrating a fraud or a falsehood, a liar.

Malignity- The act of misinterpreting the words or actions of others, or putting the worst construction on their conduct.

Whisperers- Whisperers are people who secretly, and in a sly manner, by hints and inuendoes, detract from others, or excite suspicion of them. A “whisperer does not openly calumniate, but is a more dangerous class of person because they spread true or false hints of evil of others, to other people, communicating the evil report under a promise of the information to remain a secret between the whisperer and the one or ones they divulged the evil report to, yet knowing what was said in secret will be revealed publicly. The Whisperer can be found everywhere in any class of people and there is scarcely any one more dangerous to the peace or happiness of society than those rumor spreaders.

Hypocrisy- The word means, ”perpetrators”  Presenting ourselves publicly to be what we are really not; A Hypocrite in the church displays a false appearance of religion (being sincere); but hides a wicked purpose under the appearance of piety.

Envies- Having hatred of others because of they possess gifts (talents), inward and or outward  beauty,  positions of power, financial or social status  or other stand-out qualities. Envy is one of the most common manifestations of wickedness, and shows clearly the deep depravity of man. Benevolence rejoices at the happiness of others, and seeks to promote it. But envy exists almost everywhere, and in almost every human bosom:

All Evil speaking- “backbiting” or "speaking against others. This would include all unkind or slanderous speaking against others.

Here is some important things to know about our Human Behavior
a.     Evil Speaking is a common fault in the world. One of the designs of living a Christian life is following the principles, precepts and sincere truths of the WORD of God as well as living a life led by faith, having heard the WORD of God and took heed to it in order to guard against it. Reason?

b.     “Out of your mouth can come forth either blessings or curses.  We are to bless with our mouths and not put people on blast just because we have issues with them.

c.     The Christian religion teaches us to lay aside whatever guile, insincerity, and false appearances we may have acquired, and to put on the simple honesty and openness of children.

Things we need to know about what inappropriate behaviors we accumulate in the course of our lives:
1.    We all acquire more or less of guile and insincerity in the course of life.

2.    We all (grown-ups) learn to conceal our sentiments and feelings, (We learn how to perpetrate)  and almost unconsciously we all at some point  come to appear different from what we really are.

3.    It is not so with children. In the child, every emotion of the bosom appears as it is. Every emotion is expressed; every feeling of the heart is developed; and in the cheeks, the open eye, the joyous or sad countenance. What you see in a child in their formative years is genuine and innocence. What you see in children beyond adolescence is learned and influenced by Grown-ups and peers.

4.    Now, it is one of the “primary” purposes of pure religion (Christianity) to bring us back to the place where, God, the WORD, and the Holy Spirit can strip off all the subterfuges which we have acquired in life. Here’s what we all need to know and take heed to:

5.    Whoever lives a life of subterfuge and will not change or has not changes as of yet is not and has never been converted in the eyes of God. In short, a person that’ possesses and operate their life in a deceitful, cunning, and crafty way, cannot be a Christian.

What did Jesus have to say about all this?
Jesus said:

"Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven," Matthew 18:3.  So, as little children (for those who are new converts and have not been on the Christian journey long) The Apostle Peter gives a quick review

Desire the “sincere” milk of the WORD of God (vs.2)
This desiring of the “milk” of the Word pertains to “new” converts in the faith. ‎The preaching and teaching of the Word of God must be presented without guile or falsehood; then unadulterated, pure, genuine.  It’s the gospel in its purest and most simple form, adapted to nurture the new-born soul.

There are 2 types of preaching and teaching:  simple truth; the other, truths which they were to desire were the more elementary truths of the gospel, such as would be adapted to those who were babes in knowledge.

What Christ is to us as believers:
We are “CHOSEN” by GOD, who is gracious, mighty to save; as a living stone (Chief corner stone) (verse 6). The foundation of all truth: Jesus said: You shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free. Jesus also said: I AM the WAY, the TRUTH, and The LIFE. No man comes unto the Father but by ME. Yet rejected and disallowed by men (vs. 3-4)

What Believers are to God (Christ):
We are “Lively” stones, “Spiritual” houses, a “holy priesthood” designed to offer up  sacrifices acceptable to God by Jesus Christ. (vs. 5)

Peter Reminds us: “We also are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood a holy nation, a peculiar people chosen (saved) picked out of darkness to show forth praises to our God (Jehovah) through Jesus Christ because He brought us out of darkness into HIS marvelous light….places our feet on Straight Street and gave us eternal life”.

What Christ is to Sinners:
The way of Salvation to all that will believe, but the Right judge at the Great White Judgment to those who refuse in HIM and die unbelieving
He the “stone “ which the builders disallowed to the disobedient. He the stone of stumbling and a rock of offense, even to them which stumble at the WORD, being disobedient.

Christian Relationship to Others:
We are both “Strangers” and “Pilgrims”. For this reason we are to abstain from fleshy lusts because they war against our soul. (psyche) We are to have a honest conversation among the Gentiles (Non believers) so if they speak against you as evil doers, they may by your good works glorify God in the day of visitation: (Their day of conversion in Jesus Christ).

Christian Relationships to Government
"Therefore submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord's sake, whether to the king as supreme, Or to governors, as to those who are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers and for the praise of those who do good. For this is the will of God, that by doing good you may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men as free, yet not using liberty as a cloak for vice, but as bondservants of God Honor all people. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the king".   (NKJV)

It's a Biblical principle to give honor where honor is due.
Here in verses 13 through 17, Peter reveals to us for the Lord's sake that we are to "submit" to every ordinance of man, whether it is a mandate from a king or other government officials. That being said, Christians are under God's mandate (command) to obey human laws and rulers with one exception: The "exception" is as long as the human laws or ruler does not transgress against the Laws of God. Where there is a  discrepancy in the Laws, we are to voice out objection in a peaceful manner and if we are treated as violators of the law and arrested, we are to allow the "due process" of standing up for God and standing against an ungodly law or ordinance to go forth, while praying to God to correct the injustice done towards us because we chose to stand against the law or laws that if followed would have put us in disobedience to God, who being the "intrinsic" authority laws superseded  any man made laws or ordinances. We are living in a time of increased civil disobedience worldwide and unrest yet. we are  required to be law biding citizens. However, be rest assured in the present spiritual climate, there may come a time you may have to stand against injustice that you just might be labeled an "enemy of the state" due to your stance.

The Apostle Paul shared the explanation with us concerning submission in this case in 'Romans 13:1-7:

Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, he who rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and he will commend you. For he is God's servant to do you good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword for nothing. He is God's servant, an agent of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer. Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also because of conscience.

Paul said this why you pay taxes, because the authorities are God's servants, who give their full time to governing. Give everyone what you owe him: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor.   (NIV)

This may have seemed an odd command coming from Peter, given the fact that at this time in history, Christians were being persecuted with veracity and their rights were violated as well as their freedom of religion. Despite the situation, they were still admonished to give honor to the government of Rome.

Peter said by doing so, Christians were showing God honor by their submission and proving they were truly free in Christ Jesus. They were not free to sin against others. They had to realized they didn't need to agree with the government's views, laws or the actions of its officials.  It wasn't predicated on that. It was predicated on being in obedience to God who gave the commandment to submit to legal authority.

Remember, the government was established by God. in fact, Isaiah (Isaiah 9:6) tells us that ultimately, government is on the shoulders of Jesus Christ and the day will come when there will be righteousness in every branch of government because Jesus will establish it in the  new Millennium when He is seen coming back to earth, riding a white horse in Revelation 19:11 through chapter 20:15. The Christians in the early history church realized they were spiritual free because of their new relationship in Jesus Christ, and as a result, they were not to have hateful attitudes, not to spew out venomous words of slander and guile and refrain from promoting or participate in actions against those officials they didn't agree with. The "latter" was a major issue with the Jews in this time in history because they thought it was unlawful to obey any non-Jewish government officials and they had outright hatred toward the Roman Empire.

Peter conveys to us 2 important principles that are the result of submission to authority:
a.   The purpose of human government and civil rulers, was to control and eradicate lawlessness wherever it occurred, so  it is only right that all good people cooperate and assist in putting lawlessness down.

b.    It's the will of God, that it would be well with you and in your well doing, you may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men. When Christians obey the Eight Commands for Servanthood, (submitted servants) they not only are doing the will of God, "but they put to silence" all the enemies of Christianity. What are the 8 Commands for Servanthood?

1. Abstain from fleshly lusts (1 Peter 2:11).
2. Live honest lives before men (1 Peter 2:12).
3. Submit to human civil rulers (1 Peter 2:13-15).
4. Be free, but live godly (1 Peter 2:16).
5. Honor all men (1 Peter 2:17).
6. Love the brotherhood (1 Peter 2:17).
7. Fear God (1 Peter 2:17).
8. Honor the king (1 Peter 2:17).

The Purpose and Point of Christian Freedom

"The purpose of Christian freedom and submission in general is to honor God through obedience. So we as Christians aren't supposed to tear others down, even government officials no matter how corrupt they might be".

"The Point? We are to trust God in every circumstance and avoid having a slanderous evil tongue that can be used by Satan".

It has been said that a wise servant of God are those who will trust HIM as the protector of their freedom and will refuse to return to the slavery of fear.
We are called to do what's right because in our daily living, we are representing members in the family of God. Not only that, by doing so we show confidence that God will bring truth to light. We show confidence that even if God does permit falsehoods to levied against us, these falsehoods do not in any way change the truth of Romans 8:1:

"There is therefore now, no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus"
and by walking in the Spirit of Christ and obedience to Christ, we belong to HIM no matter what happens to us in this world because in our obedience to HIM, we show that we will not deny HIM. Only God can truly condemn you".

How Do You Trust God in Every Circumstance?

"Servants, be subject to your masters with all fear; not only to the good and gentle, but also to the forward". (vs. 18)

What does this really mean in modern terms?

It means those who are servants or employees are to submit to the authority of your  supervisors and overseers in respect to performing the duties of employment The word here means properly "domestic workers - those employed about a house, or living in the same house. as it pertains to Biblical history, at the time these verses were written and applied the people this applied to might have been actual slaves, or not. The word would apply to them, whether they were hired, or whether they were owned as slaves.

Important: The word should not and cannot be employed to prove that slavery existed in the churches to which Peter wrote, and still less to prove that he approved of slavery, or regarded it as a good institution.

This exhortation would be, and still is, strictly applicable to any persons employed as domestics, even if they had voluntarily hired themselves out to be such. It then becomes incumbent on them, while they remained in that condition, to perform their duties as Christians with fidelity, and with Christian meekness bear all the wrongs which they might suffer from those in whose service they were indebted to. The people whom this verse applied to were Christians. The implication here is the servants were not involved in a mutiny and not pursuing such a course because it would be inconsistent with real piety. Those who were under them are represented as suffering grievous wrongs. They were to do so with all proper reverence and respect. They were to submit across the board of authority not only to the good and gentle, but also to the froward This included those leaders who were ‎ "crooked, bent;" that were perverse, wicked, unjust, peevish. Anyone who is a servant or domestic is liable to be employed in the service of such a master;  As long as the relation continues, the servant should perform his duty with fidelity, regardless the character of the person Why?

For this is thankworthy, if a man for conscience toward God endure grief, suffering wrongfully. (vs. 19)
You will find favor in God for standing in Jesus name. If a man for conscience toward God has to endure grief, that is, in performing the conscientious discharge of his duty, or if, in the endurance of this wrong, he regards himself as serving God.

What this means is i
f he feels that God, by providence, placed him in the circumstances in which he is in, and that it is a duty which he owes to the Lord to bear every trial  and incident to that condition with a submissive spirit. If he does this, he will evince the true nature of religion, and will be graciously accepted of God. That being said, the servant of God must be aware of the following:

(1)  As a servant of the Lord, there always stands the possibility that you might be abused.
The slaves of yesteryear had very little to no security against being wronged; and that it was a special and very desirable characteristic of those who were in that condition, to be able to bear wrong with a proper spirit. It is impossible so to modify slavery that this shall not be the case; for the whole system is one of oppression, and there can be nothing that shall effectually secure the slave from being ill-treated.

(2)
It would follow from this passage, if this refers to slavery, that that servant hood is a very hard and undesirable condition of life; for that is a very undesirable condition where the principal virtue. which they who are in it are required to exercise, is "patience under wrongs." Sometimes, as a servant of God, your stewardship requires that you bear heavy burdens and face fiery trials and suffer great wrongs. Such a condition cannot be in accordance with the gospel, and cannot be designed by God to be permanent. The relation of parent and child is never thus represented. It is never said or...

(3)
It is acceptable to God, if we bear wrong with a proper spirit, from whatever quarter it may come.
Our proper business in life is, to do the will of God; to display the right spirit, no matter others may treat us; and to show, even under excessive wrong, the sustaining power and the excellence of true religion.

Main Point: Every one who is oppressed and wronged, therefore, has an eminent opportunity to show a spirit which will honor the gospel; and the servant and the martyr may do more to honor the gospel than if they were both permitted to enjoy liberty and life undisturbed. We also glorify God in death.

For what glory is it, if, when ye be buffeted for your faults, ye shall take it patiently? but if, when ye do well, and suffer for it, ye take it patiently, this is acceptable with God. (vs. 20)
For what glory is it What honor or credit would it be. If, when ye be buffeted for your faults That is, if you are punished when you deserve it. The word "buffet" ‎- means, to strike with the fist; and then to strike in any way; to maltreat, Matt 26:67; Mark 14:65; 1 Cor 4:11; 2 Cor 12:7. Perhaps there may be a reference here to the manner in which servants were commonly treated, or the kind of punishment to which they were exposed. They would be likely to be struck in sudden anger, either by the hand, or by anything that was accessible. The word rendered "for your faults," is sinning, ‎That is, "if being guilty of an offence, or having done wrong." The idea is, that if they were justly punished, and should take it patiently, there would be no credit or honor in it.

Take Persecution and Suffering patiently.

"If, even then, you display an non-complaining spirit, and bear your burden and suffering with the utmost calmness and patience, it would be regarded as comparatively no virtue, and as entitling you to no honor. The feeling of all who saw it would be that you deserved it, and there would be nothing to excite their sympathy or compassion. The patience it may create might be as great as in the other case, but there would be the feeling that you deserved all that you received, and the spirit evinced in that case could not be regarded as entitled to any particular praise. If your masters  (bosses and supervisors) are inflicting on you only what you deserve, it would be in the highest degree shameful for you to rise up against them, and resist them, for it would be only adding to the wrong which you had already done. Take solace in knowing that
this is acceptable with God. It is that which is agreeable to him, or which pleases Him..
.

For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps:

The same Spirit that was in Jesus is required by the very nature of your Christian calling; you were called into the church in order that you might evince it. (1 Thessalonians 3:3). The object is, to hold up the example of Christ to those who were called to suffer, and to say to them that they should bear their trials in the same spirit that he evinced in his. (Philippians 3:10).leaving us an example an outline or sketch a pattern for imitation. That ye should follow his steps  our lives should resemble the example Jesus set before us both in what He taught and the life He led that we should follow him, as if we travel in the same type steps (exactly along behind him), and should place our feet precisely where his were. The meaning is, that there should be the closest imitation or resemblance of how Jesus
Christ lives in character and conduct in each one of us..

The things in which we are to imitate him are specified in the following verses.
Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth (vs. 22)
Jesus was perfectly holy.
There is an allusion here to
Isaiah 53:9; and the sense is, Jesus was entirely innocent, and suffered without having committed any crime. We are to be careful that, if we suffer, it should be without committing any crime, or because we were guilty of some type of sin. We should so live, as the Savior did, as not to deserve to be punished, and thus only shall we entirely follow his example.

Our Christian Duty
It is as much our duty our responsibility to live in a way that warrant the reproaches of others, as it is to bear them (sufferings) with patience when we are called to suffer them. The first thing in regard to hard treatment from others is so to live in such a way that there shall be no justification for hard treatment from anyone. If reproaches come upon us when we have not deserved them, we are to still bear them as the Savior did. If he suffered unjustly, (and we know He did) unjustly suffer) we should esteem it to be no strange thing that we should; if he bore the injuries done him with meekness, we should learn that it is possible for us to do it also; and we should learn also that we have not the spirit of his religion unless we actually do it.

Peter said: "
Neither was guile found in his mouth." Peter said in so many words the following: Jesus was not a master of deception. There was no deceit, hypocrisy, or insincerity in His character. He was in all respects everything he professed to be, and he imposed on no one by any false and unfounded claims. All this is in reference to the time of the crucifixion of Jesus when the Savior was put to death; and the sense is, that though he was condemned as an impostor, yet that the charge was wholly unfounded. As in his whole life before he was perfectly sincere, so he was eminently on that solemn occasion.

Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously:

Jesus
did not use harsh and opprobrious words in return for those which he received: Jesus didn’t return evil for evil. Jesus was reviled. He was accused of being a seditious man; spoken of as a deceiver; charged with being in league with Beelzebub, the "prince of the devils" and condemned as a blasphemer against God.

Who dared to make such railing accusations against Jesus?
These accusations were done: by the great and the influential of the land; in the most public manner; with the design to alienate his friends from him; with most cutting and severe sarcasm and irony; and in reference to everything that would most affect a man of delicate and tender sensibility. YET…..Jesus did not revile those who had reproached him. He asked that justice might be done. He demanded that if he had spoken evil, they should bear witness of the evil; but beyond that he did not go. He used no harsh language. He showed no anger. He called for no revenge. He prayed that they might robe forgiven. He calmly stood and bore it all, for he came to endure all kinds of suffering in order that he might set us an example, and make an atonement for our sins. When he suffered injustice from others, in his trial and in his death, he did not threaten punishment. He did not call down the wrath of heaven. He did not even predict that they would be punished; he expressed no wish that they should be.

"But committed himself to him (Jesus) that judges righteously."
The meaning is, that Jesus committed His “whole” self:  his cause, his name, his interests, the whole case, to God. The meaning of the phrase "that judgeth righteously" here is, that God would do him (Jesus) exact justice. Though wronged by people, Jesus felt assured that he would do right.. He would rescue his name from these reproaches; he would give him the honor in the world which he deserved; and be given a name that is above all names.

It means Jesus would bring upon those who had wronged him all that was necessary in order to show his disapprobation of what they had done, and all that would be necessary to give the highest support to the cause of virtue
Luke 23:46. This is the example which is set before us when we are wronged.

The whole example of Jesus Christ embraces these following points:

(1) We should see to it that we ourselves are guiltless in the matter for which we are reproached or accused.
Before we make the claim that we are suffering as Christ did, we should be very sure that our lives are lived in such a manner that does not deserve reproach. We cannot hope to be as pure in all things as he was; but we can live in such way that if we are reproached and reviled we may be certain that it is not for any wrong that we have done to others, or that we do not deserve it from our fellow-men.

(2) When we are reproached and reviled, we should feel that we were called to this by our profession. This was one of the things we were taught to expect when we became Christians. The type of sufferings we endure in these modern times is what the prophets and apostles endured, and what the Master himself suffered in an eminent degree; and that if we meet with the scorn of the great, the frivlous, the rich, the powerful, it is no different than the Savior did, and no more than we have been taught to expect will be our lot in the Christian life.. It may be well, too, to remember our unworthiness; and to reflect, that though we have done no wrong to the individual who reviles us yet that we are sinners, and that such reproaches may not be a useless admonisher of our being guilty before God. So David felt when reproached by Shimei: "So let him curse, because the Lord hath said unto him, Curse David. Who shall then say, Wherefore hast thou done so?"
2 Samuel 16:10.

(3) When suffering and persecution does occur, we should calmly and confidently commit our cause to God. Our name, our character, our influence, our reputation, while living and after we are dead, we should leave entirely with him. We should not seek nor desire revenge. We should not call down the wrath of God on our persecutors and slanderers. We should calmly feel that God will give us the measure of reputation which we ought to have in the world, and that he will suffer no ultimate injustice to be done us. "Commit thy way unto the Lord; trust also in him, and he shall bring it to pass; and he shall bring forth thy righteousness as the light, and thy judgment as the noon-day,"
Psalms 37:5-6.

Peter continuing concerning Jesus further said:

"Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed."

The meaning is, that Jesus volunteered Himself in His own body. He did not make expiation by offering a bloody victim, but was himself the sacrifice. In reference to bearing our sins, t
here is an allusion here undoubtedly to Isaiah 53:4,12. This cannot mean that Christ so took upon himself the sins of people as to become himself a sinner, it must mean that he put himself in the place of sinners, and bore that which those sins deserved; that is, that he endured in his own person that which, if it had been inflicted on the sinner himself, would have been a proper expression of the divine displeasure against sin, or would have been a proper punishment for sin. (2 Corinthians 5:21).

Jesus was treated as if he had been a sinner, in order that we might be treated as if we had not sinned; that is, as if we were righteous. There is no other way in which we can conceive that one bears the sins of another. In the natural world, sins cannot be literally transferred to another; and all that can be meant here is, Jesus took the consequences of the penalty of sin on himself, and suffered as if he had committed the transgressions himself.

Jesus was treated as he would have been if he had been a sinner. He was treated as a criminal; crucified as those most guilty were on a Roman built cross; and endured the same kind of physical pain that  guilty men do when punished for their own sins; and passed through mental sorrows like the guilty themselves experience when they are left to distressing anguish of mind, and are abandoned by God.

The suffering of the Savior was in all respects made as nearly like the sufferings of the most guilty, as the sufferings of a perfectly innocent being could be. W
hile on the cross, Jesus bore all the sorrows which our sins deserved. While it does not mean that he conveyed our sorrows there, it does mean while there he suffered under the intolerable burden, and was by that burden crushed in death. The phrase "on the tree," literally "on the wood," means the cross.

It was his being put to death as our atoning sacrifice that became the means by which we become dead to sin, and live our lives dedicated to God. The phrase "being dead to sins"
literally meant: "to be absent from sins."The overall meaning of this phrase is, we have been separated from sin to the extent that it no longer influences us, thus, we should live unto God. In regards to sin, we are to be, as if we were dead; and sin is to have no more influence over us than if we were in our graves. (Romans 6:2-7). The death of Christ on the cross brought this about. (Romans  6:8) For as he died literally on the cross on account of our sins, the effect has been to lead us to see the evil of our transgressions, and compel to lead new, and holy lives.

Even though we are dead in respect to sin, we have real life in another respect. We are made alive unto God to righteousness and to true holiness. We are now "new creations" in Christ Jesus. "Old things" are passed away and behold, "all things" are made new (2 Corinthians 5:17) (
Romans 6:11( (Galatians 2:20).

When
the Savior was scourged or whipped; the effect on us was the same in producing spiritual healing, and in recovering us from our faults, as if we had been scourged ourselves. By faith we see the bruises inflicted on him, the black and blue spots made by beating; we remember that they were on account of our sins, and not for his; and the effect in reclaiming us is the same as if they had been inflicted on us.
[
Ye were healed] Sin is often spoken of as a disease, and redemption from it as a restoration from a deadly malady. (Isaiah 53:5.)

"For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls."

This verse refers back t to Isaiah 53:6, "All we like sheep have gone astray...".

We were like a flock without a shepherd. because of sin, we had wandered far away from the true fold, and were following our own paths. We were without a protector, and were exposed to every kind of danger. This aptly and forcibly expresses the condition of the whole race before God recovers people by the plan of salvation. A flock wandering without a shepherd, conductor, or guide, is in a most pitiable condition; and so was man in his wanderings before he was sought out and was brought back to the true fold by the Great Shepherd.

Finally......

"But are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls"

In other words, return to Christ, who came to seek and save those who were lost. He is often called a Shepherd. (
John 10:1-16.) The word "bishop,"  means "overseer." It may be applied to one who inspects or oversees anything, as public works, or the execution of treaties; to anyone who is an inspector of wares offered for sale; or, in general, to anyone who is a superintendent. It is applied in the New Testatment to those who are appointed to watch over the interests of the church, and especially to the officers of the church. Here it is applied to the Lord Jesus as the great Guardian and Superintendent of his church; and the title of universal Bishop belongs to him alone!

1 Peter 1:13-25   "Living Before God Our Father"

"Therefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and rest your hope fully upon the grace that is to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ;  as obedient children, not conforming yourselves to the former lusts, as in your ignorance; but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct,  because it is written, "Be holy, for I am holy."

And if you call on the Father, who without partiality judges according to each one's work, conduct yourselves throughout the time of your stay here in fear; knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from your fathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot. He indeed was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you who through Him believe in God, who raised Him from the dead and gave Him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.

The Enduring Word
Since you have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit in sincere love of the brethren, love one another fervently with a pure heart,  having been born again, not of corruptible seed but incorruptible, through the
word of God which lives and abides forever, because "All flesh is as grass, And all the glory of man as the flower of the grass. The grass withers, And its flower falls away, But the word of the Lord endures forever."
Now this is the word which by the gospel was preached to you.

Bible Study Series: Exposition on the Book of 1 Peter 1: 14- 25 “FAITH” Having an Active Faith: Biblical Text: 1 Peter 1: 14-19 and verses 22-25

Introduction:

Faith has been defined by Hebrews 11:1 as “ the substance of things hoped for, and the evidence of things not seen”. In Hebrews 11:6, the Bible tells us that we cannot please God without faith. The reason this is so is, our belief that “God is” (who He said He is) requires our faith and our belief that God reward s those that diligently seek in faith demands our faith.
The Bible is filled with many people from kings, noblemen, women, prophets and common citizens of various nationalities who exemplified faith and were richly rewarded because they stood on their beliefs in their faith. In Habakkuk 2:4, the prophet declared, “anyone” who’s “justified” in the eyes of God was required to live by THEIR faith. Habakkuk said that specific promises God made to His people would come at an appointed time, which implied that there would be a period of waiting (tarrying) involved for those promises to come to pass. But, at the end, (the time appointed by God) it would speak and not lie! (they would surely come to pass) The people in Habakkuk’s time understood that they had to trust God by faith in order to see the promises of God fulfilled in their lives. They also understood that their faith had to remain active in the other affairs of their lives until those things and prophecies promised to them by the Lord would finally come to pass.

In this Bible series, we are going to examine ways how to resurrect a person’s faith that has been severely shaken by the many and varied types of intense trials they’ve faced in this life. Many of us if we would be transparent for a moment would have to admit that the devil and his demonic army .has attacked them so, they have suffered faith-wise in waiting on God  to come to their rescue. But be assured that what God has ordained and promised, HE will maintain and it will sure come to pass in the time appointed by HIM.  And we will talk about the importance of having a faith that is active. That is, how God expects us to live each day of our lives in obedience to the Word of God, as we trust and believe that God rewards faithfulness in the Christian walk.

“Obedience”: An Important key to having an “active” faith?
“Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ”; (vs. 14)

Gird up the loins of your mind.
Back in the mid 1980’s, I used to hear the lyrics of old praise and worship song that went like this:“Got a mind to do right…God a mind to do right….God a mind to do right….everyday…..Jesus gave me this mind to do right….got a mind to do right…..everyday…Then, in subsequent verses the singer would exchange the actions to do right with other things they wanted to do right in giving praise to God. Things such as having a mind to pray right, to sing right, to preach right, and ultimately to live right. The one common reason they had to have a willingness to do these things right in God’s sight was it was Jesus who gave them the kind of mind that would give them the desire to praise and worship God the right way.

So, the Apostle Peter in the 14th verse declares to the reader: you have to “gird up” the loins of your mind and focused on godly things. Peter confirms what Apostle Paul said in
Philippians 2:5 “Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus”: and also in verse 12 and 13 where he said:  “Therefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.  For it is God which work in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure”.

In addition, Paul also admonished the body of Christ in
Romans 12:2: And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

Both Apostles agree it’s essential to have the right mindset to handle God’s assignments in ministry and whenever facing the many fiery trials the devil launches against your “salvation” life in Jesus Christ.  The Christian life is a lifestyle of godly character and conduct. Remember, your faith will be constantly tested. The “out product” of your “tried faith” is patience, endurance and hope.  We are to endure all of the trials of life-like those servants who were prepared for labor, for a race, or for a conflict.

Be sober and vigilant

Your adversary the devil is waging war against the work and the worker. Paul told Timothy, in order to be considered a “qualified” minister, he had to become “temperate”, that is “even tempered”, sober-minded, handling the daily activity of his life with good behavior. He must be hospitable, able to teach;  not given to wine, not violent, not greedy for money,
* but gentle, not quarrelsome, not covetous;  one who rules his own house well if married, When you live with an active faith, you cannot afford to become puffed up with pride. It will cause you to fall into the same condemnation as the devil.  Your active faith will give you a good testimony among those who are outside and keep you from falling into reproach and the snare of the devil. When your faith is active, your faith will help you to maintain good works.

And hope to the end:
In order to do this, you can’t become fainthearted or give up because we have become weary of all the warfare we’ve had to endure from the kingdom of darkness when we are experiencing trials. This means 2 things
:

First, we must never abandon the hopes of the gospel, which includes the “hope” for “Eternal life”.
We are to cherish those blessed hopes to the end of our life. We can never be ashamed of the gospel of Jesus Christ under any circumstances. "It is the power of God unto salvation to everyone who will believe", regardless of race, creed color, sex, or national origin. All of us have been saved by this same gospel and by the same “Savior” this gospel talks about; Jesus Christ
.

Second, endure trials and times of persecution.

Whatever fierce oppositions we might encounter,( and we will experience them) and however much effort might be forged by any of the followers of Satan, we must endure these trials and times of persecution and trouble, even if we perish on the battlefield as good soldiers in Christ Jesus. There’s an eternal reward of “life eternal” with God
. 2 Timothy 2:12 tells us “If we suffer with Christ, (that is if we endure suffering for the cause of Christ) we shall also reign with HIM at the end of our journey. Paul the Apostle encourages the people in Hebrews 10 32-36 with the following words:

“ But recall the former days in which, after you were illuminated, you endured a great struggle with sufferings, partly while you were made a spectacle both by reproaches and tribulations, and partly while you became companions of those who were so treated;  for you had compassion on me in my chains, and joyfully accepted the plundering of your goods, knowing that you have a better and an enduring possession for yourselves in heaven”. “Therefore do not cast away your confidence, which has great reward. For you have need of endurance, so that after you have done the will of God, you may receive the promise”:
Third, be confident in knowing the work (salvation and redemption) God started in you will be completed at the coming of Jesus Christ. (the second coming)  Philippians 1:6 says: “Being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ”.

God will then bestow His favor, that great favor we hope for when He return from heaven to judge the world. According to 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17, Jesus Christ will first come back to redeem His church. Then 7 years later, He will return to earth to destroy the enemies of Israel and set up His millennial kingdom. We, the body of Christ will have an active role in the millennial kingdom.

We are required to walk out our faith as obedient children, not fashioning ourselves according to the former lusts in our ignorance: That is, conduct yourselves as becomes the children of God, by obeying his commands; by submission to His will; and manifesting unwavering confidence in Jehovah as your Father at all times.
The idea
“life principle” is: We are to have some model or other examples, of how we are a new creature in Christ Jesus, living according to the precepts and principle truth of God with which we are to frame our lives, but we were not to adhere to or adopt those models or examples that reflect former principles and conduct (the “old man”) that was in disobedience to the will of God.

The Christian believer’s character and conduct must be different from what he or she was before salvation was offered and before conversion was given. He or she is to be governed by new laws. This means “
God’s 2 Laws of love” must be the primary governor of our life and applied in our obedience to the Scriptures.

This says the life goals of a believer must be aimed at new objects, and molded in accordance with Biblical principles. Before our conversion, we were supremely selfish and lived for personal gratification. We gave ourselves over to the free indulgence to our fleshly appetites and passions.
The only restraints present were a respect for the decencies of life, and a reference to one’s own health, property, or reputation, yet without regard to the will of God. In the past, we conformed ourselves to the customs and opinions around us, rather than to the requirements of God our Maker. We lived for worldly aggrandizements, power, prestige, and superior social status. The reason was our primary objectives in life were the accumulation of wealth and/ or the quest for fame. In retrospect, like those who still are unconverted, there are Christians that give indulgence to every passion which they wished to gratify, regardless of reputation, health, property, or salvation.
Now, because of the conversion experience, Christians are now to be governed by a different rule. Thus, the former standard we used of” morals” and “opinions” are no longer to be our guide. Our new guide is the will of God and our testimony of having a personal relationship with Jesus Christ our Savior and Lord. Who’s morals and standards for godly living are higher than those of man
.

A Charge to be Holy….In Character and Conduct ….”Our faith in action”
But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; (vs. 15)
Jesus Christ has given us the “living” example as to how we are to frame our lives. We are to live exemplary of His character and conduct and frame our lives this way because He’s the one who has called us into His kingdom. People who come in contact with us should see the presence of Christ in our lives, based upon our general conduct and character

The Bible tells us He chose us before the foundation of the world with the design that we would be holy and live without blame before Him. Simply put, as we live according to having “active faith”, we are to be like HIM in
character and conduct. God didn’t redeem us so we could live the way we wanted, and do the things we wanted to do. God had a specific purpose in mind when He set up the redemption process. The Apostle Paul shares with the Ephesians and us God’s purpose for us being redeemed.

In Ephesians 1:3-14, Paul said:

‘Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love, having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will, to the praise of the glory of His grace, by which He made us accepted in the Beloved.”

You may ask why was it in Jesus?  Paul goes on to give us the reason.
Paul said
because we have “redemption” in HIM. (Jesus) You can call it God’s “Redemption Package”.
“ In Him (Jesus) we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace which He made to abound toward us in all wisdom and prudence,  having made known to us the mystery of His will, according to His good pleasure which He purposed in Himself, that in the dispensation of the fullness of the times He might gather together in one all things in Christ, both* which are in heaven and which are on earth in Him.  In Him also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestined according to the purpose of Him who works all things according to the counsel of His will, that we who first trusted in Christ should be to the praise of His glory.”
“ In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise,  who* is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory”.

Paul then said: “Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.”
Since God is holy, and we profess to be his followers, it stands to reason we also ought to be holy. Note also that the call for the child of God to be holy is a command from God. this command was first given to the Israelites, but as the professed people of God, every Christian is under this same mandate. Here’s a great literal truth: people regardless of their religious beliefs will attempt to imitate the God whom they worship. They will try to form their character in accordance with their deity. Because they regard what their god does as right. They will attempt to rise in virtue to reflect the god they adore. They will put in practice freely and do those things they believe will grant approval from their god. In doing a study of different religions and the characteristics of the gods that are worshipped by the people who follow that particular religion, it will give you an accurate picture of the character of the people also.
This being true of other religions, since we are given the “attributes” of the true and living God Jehovah (Yahweh in Hebrew) the God who is our deity, the basis of the Christian's worship is “Holiness” because, Yahweh character is “HOLY”! This means unequivocally if we truly professed to be followers of Yahweh,
(Jehovah) we must live “holy” lives.

Living our lives in the “FEAR” of God without “fearing” worshipping God
And if ye call on the Father, who without respect of persons judgeth according to every man's work, pass the time of your sojourning here in fear:
A question was once asked: Is there a time when people take the “fear” of God too seriously or a time when people don’t take it serious enough?

Someone once said
: “I think our culture for the most part has lost its “awe” and appreciation for the wonder we get when we view the gift of life”. They based their answer on responding to an opinion question concerning the aborting of babies while in the development during the child birthing process. The sad truth is as a whole there are those who are guilty of having no awe concerning the creation work of our Creator Yahweh, (Jehovah) because they have lost their respect and are no longer “awe-struck” about Almighty God.

It is outright foolish to have no “FEAR”, that is “reverence” or “sincere respect” for the very ONE who‘s the reason everything made, including us, was made. On the other hand, even in the awesome display of God’s omnipotent power in the universe and in the affairs of men and nations, the fear we should have of God is not that kind of fear that keep us from approaching Him or interacting with HIM. God made man. He made man for fellowship and to interact with HIM. In the Garden of Eden before the fall of Adam and Eve, God would meet them in the garden at evening time. (The Bible calls that time “
in the cool of the day”.

God has had an ongoing active relationship with man since creation and those of us who are in Christ should have a right understanding concerning His awesome power to create, redeem and destroy when need be. That understanding should lead all of us to do a thorough evaluation of our attitude toward HIM as well as our personal relationship with HIM. In short, the
“fear” we have of God should be that of “holy respect” and a “reverence” of the fact that HE is sovereign, righteous, awesome, holy, Love, creator, God, the Great I AM THAT I AM. We ought to “revere Him”, because He worthy to be praised and we should actively give HIM all the glory, honor and the highest praise. Not only that, we should understand that:

a.
God is no respect of person.
God is fair and impartial. God is not affected by outside influences in regards to how He treats people regardless of their state or statue in this life. Rank, wealth, beauty or any other external distinctions does not cloud God’s ability to judge righteously or in fairness.

Acts 10:34-35

“Then Peter opened his mouth and said: "In truth I perceive that God shows no partiality.  But in every nation whoever fears Him and works righteousness is accepted by Him.”
b.    God Judges in Righteousness
Romans 2:1-11

“Therefore you are inexcusable, O man, whoever you are who judge, for in whatever you judge another you condemn yourself; for you who judge practice the same things.  But we know that the judgment of God is according to truth against those who practice such things.  And do you think this, O man, you who judge those practicing such things, and doing the same, that you will escape the judgment of God?   Or do you despise the riches of His goodness, forbearance, and longsuffering, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance?  But in accordance with your hardness and your impenitent heart you are treasuring up for yourself wrath in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God, who "will render to each one according to his deeds:  eternal life to those who by patient continuance in doing good seek for glory, honor, and immortality; but to those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness indignation and wrath, tribulation and anguish, on every soul of man who does evil, of the Jew first and also of the Greek;  but glory, honor, and peace to everyone who works what is good, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. “For there is “no partiality” with God”.

As Christians, in reverence (fear) of the Lord, we worship Him as a Father-as one having all the feelings of a kind and tender parent toward them. We must remember that our sojourning here on earth is temporary. This is not our permanent home. We are pilgrims on a journey. It behooves us to have holy reverence for God (Yahweh/ Jehovah) as well as for His Law True religion  has the element of reverence and respect for God. The Psalmist in Psalms 113:13-18, described the manner God see those who has reverence of HIM:

“As a father pities his children, So the Lord pities those who fear Him. For He knows our frame; He remembers that we are dust. As for man, his days are like grass; As a flower of the field, so he flourishes. For the wind passes over it, and it is gone, And its place remembers it no more. But the mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting. On those who fear Him, And His righteousness to children's children, To such as keep His covenant, And to those who remember His commandments to do them".

c.      God redeemed us through Jesus Christ.
Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers;

The Price of Redemption for the Sins of Man
The manner in which God redeemed us is a compelling argument to all of us to live a holy life. God did not redeem us with “corruptible things” like silver or gold. God commended His love toward us in while we were still sinners, Jesus Christ died for us, purchasing (redeeming) our lives by the shedding of His own blood. Because of that, there is no other effective way to persuade true Christians to consecrate themselves and devote their entire lives to God, than to refer them to the fact that they are not their own, but they have been bought with a price. We have been purchased by the blood of Christ. What does that mean?

It means we were rescued from sin and death by the blood of Christ. The payment was the shed blood of Jesus. Without the shedding of Christ’s blood, there is no remission for our sins. The blood, the life of Christ offered as a sacrifice, effectively satisfied the wages
(death) charged to man because of sin. It served the same purpose in regard to justice and the principles of moral government, which the punishment of the sinner himself would have done. God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whosoever believe in HIM should not perish but have everlasting life (John 3:16)

God was pleased to accept Jesus’ death in the place of the punishment of the sinner, as answering the same great ends in his administration. The principles of his truth and justice could as certainly be maintained in this way as by the punishment of the guilty themselves. If so, then there was no obstacle to their salvation; and they might, on repentance, be consistently pardoned and taken to heaven. The price Jesus was willing to pay for our “sin” debt was far more in value (valuable) than any amount of silver or gold. There is no monetary amount that could have redeemed us or paid the debt to sin we owed.
Neither silver or gold could have redeemed us
from your vain conversation, that is our "vain conduct”, or manner of life. In the eyes of God, our former life (the life of “sin") was fruitless and empty. It was filled with the worship of idols, and to all the abominations connected with idolatry. What we worshipped in times past wasn’t real. It was vain and unprofitable, fueled by traditions handed down from generations past from our forefathers as far back as in ancient times. sadly many people still hold on to the traditions of men and worship man-made gods and bow down to every man-made altar and shrine in abomination to I AM THAT I AM! But our redemption and atonement could come only by the following way”

But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot: (vs.19)
The meaning here is, that the blood of Christ had a value above silver and gold; it was worth more. As a result:
a.     Jesus’ blood is again, far more valuable than silver and gold.

b.    In regards to our redemption, our redemption, His blood accomplished what silver and gold could not do. The universe had nothing more valuable to offer than the blood of the Son of God.

c.      Christ was regarded as a lamb offered for sacrifice. In Revelation 13:8, Jesus is identified as the lamb that was slain before the foundation of the world for the redemption of any man who would believe in HIM and what He had done. Jesus was that lamb without blemish.

The Apostle John also identified Jesus as the Lamb of God.
The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, "Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! (John 1:29)

Avoiding behaviors that adversely affect our Active faith

“
Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently:”

Salvation started the process of soul purification. Peter declares: "Having purified your souls."…..It’s very important to make sure your soul; has been saved. One of the leading effects the Holy Spirit is to excite us to make efforts for working out our own salvation with fear (in reverence) and trembling (awe of God) .It has been said: “the amount of effort we make "in purifying our souls" is usually a strong indicator of the actual measure of our attainments (how much we mature) in the Christian Faith”.
The truth concerning spiritual maturity is, no one can expect to have any true holiness beyond the amount of effort which they make to be conformed to God in every way. Think about it!  No one can expect wealth, or fame, or learning, without putting forth maximum effort to work toward the desired goal of success, but the premise is still the same. If you put your time, talent and commitment to work for the Lord, there will be a great payoff in spiritual maturity. What are some of the evidences of a “purified soul?
a.       Obeying the truth Romans through the Holy Spirit.
That is, you must yield (let God’s will be done in your life) to the requirements of truth. You must realize that salvation is complete and wholistic. You are saved from the penalty of sin (immediately when you confess Jesus Christ.
(Romans 10:9, John 3:16). While you still live, you learn how God saves us from the power of sin through sanctification. The Holy Spirit applies the word of God to our minds (guides u into all truth concerning Christ; Titus 3:5-6; the notes at John 3:5.
b.        Unfeigned love of the brethren] The positive effect of the influence of the Holy Spirit in applying the truth has been to produce sincere love to all who are true Christians. We are compelled to follow John 13:34-35
“A new commandment I give unto you, That you love one another as I have  loved you, that you love one another. By this all men shall know that you are My disciples, if you have love one to another. See that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently”.
The phrase
"with a pure heart fervently," means:
(1) That our love should be genuine love proceeding from a heart in which there is no guile or hypocrisy.
(2) That our love should be an “intense affection”, that is warm and passionate, ‎ ‎not cold and formal, but ardent and strong.

Peter conveys here if there’s any reason why we should love true Christians at all, it’s the same reason why our attachment to them should be intense in affection and compassion and immersed in “agape love”. This verse establishes the following points:
(a) That truth was at the foundation of their piety (walking in Godly purity). The love they had for God was based on the many revelations of real truth revealed to them concerning Jesus Christ combined with the love God has shown toward them Because God truly had shown godly love (in having grace and mercy toward the) , even when they were still sinners and living in disobedience
(b) They (the converts of Peter’s era) became Christians as the result of obeying the truth; or by yielding (by conviction and having been convinced) to its fair influence on the soul. Based on the claim of the Gospel, they became persuaded in their own minds, which broke down the hardness in their hearts. They became converted because they believed with their hearts and confessed verbally the need to change and be saved. Of their own volitions, (choices) they yielded their will and became Christians.

From the actions of True Christians, there are several doctrinal truths we can glean from the decisions they made concerning their salvation:
1.    Our minds are actively affected in the exercise of true religion. Pure religion (Christianity) causes a transformation and a renewing of your mind. The effect that the “TRUTH” contained in all of God’s Holy Word has on a person’s “soul” (psyche) is this:
When a person accepts what the Holy Spirit reveals as God’s truth, our mind will yield to God’s truth voluntarily and transfer that change it into our soul
. God’s Word changes the way you think (reason), the way you feel, (affections) how you evaluate what you see through your own eyes (imagination) what you retain (memory) and subsequently how you live and act (conscience).
2.    The ultimate aim of Christianity is always salvation for  people who accepts God (Jehovah/ Yahweh) as sovereign, intrinsic in authority and holy and willing to live according His sovereign rule.
The life principle to an active faith and spiritual maturity is obedience in faith to God’s precepts, principles and to the truth that only can come from a Holy and Sovereign God. It compels you to yield to what is true and right. It causes you to lay aside all feelings of opposition, and allow the mind to follow where His truth and duty lead. The Apostle John said in John 1:12 : “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name (Jesus)”.

3.
The effect of the influence of the Holy Spirit in applying the truth is to produce love to all who are Christians.
The expression of agape love to Christian brethren springs up in the soul of everyone who is truly converted. This love is concrete evidence that the seed of God’s truth has germinated in the soul. In addition to this, this same love of God will cause the true believer of Christ to live a life of people whose steps of life are ordered of God. Paul reminded the Church
in 1 Thessalonians 4:9-12 :

“ But concerning brotherly love you have no need that I should write to you, for you yourselves are taught by God to love one another;  and indeed you do so toward all the brethren who are in all Macedonia. But we urge you, brethren, that you increase more and more;  that you also aspire to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you,  that you may walk properly toward those who are outside, and that you may lack nothing”.
In addition, in 1 John 3:14- 23, we learn the inner workings of an active faith under the uniting banner of God’s love, as well as what the activity of an active faith will produce:

“We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love the brethren. He who does not love his brother abides in death. Whoever hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him. By this we know love, because He laid down His life for us. And we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.  But whoever has this world's goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him”?

“My little children, let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth. And by this we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before Him. For if our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and knows all  things.  Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence toward God. And whatever we ask we receive from Him, because we keep His commandments and do those things that are pleasing in His sight.  And this is His commandment: that we should believe on the name of His Son Jesus Christ and love one another, as He gave us commandment”.
We were born again with “Incorruptible Seed”: The WORD of God
“Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever”.

Peter reminds us that our being ‘born again was not done by “corruptible seed”, that is, our salvation did not come by virtue of any descent from human parents. The result of such a birth (being born of corruptible seed), or of being begotten in this way-for so the word rendered "born again" signifies corruption and decay. We are then begotten only to “die eternally” This means death in the sense that God will not allow their souls to stand in His presence after their final judgment has been pronounced ever again . There is no permanent, enduring life produced by that. It is in this sense that this is spoken of as, "corruptible seed," because it results in decay and death.

But of incorruptible That is, by God’s divine truth, thereby  communicating a living principle to the soul which can never decay. 1 John 3:9: "His seed remaineth in him; and he cannot sin, because he is born of God."

By the word of God which liveth and abideth forever .
In
James 1:18, James declared: "Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of first-fruits of his creatures.".
It is the uniform doctrine of the Scriptures that divine truth is made the “instrument” by which the quickening the soul is converted into spiritual life. This expression may either refer to God, as living forever, or to the Word of God, as being forever true. .

Finally, Peter reminds us about this life (terrestrial)

“For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away”:

That is, all human beings, all men are finite and these bodies will pass away. God said to Adam: “From dust thou art and to dust thou shall return”.
Peter in the previous verse, had been contrasting that which is “begotten by man” with that which is “begotten by God”, in reference to what’s permanent and what’s not. The former was corruptible and decaying; the latter abiding. The latter was produced by God, who lives forever; the former by the agency of man, who is himself corruptible and dying.
It’s not unnatural, then, to dwell upon the feeble, frail, decaying nature of man, in contrast with the sovereign, rule of God; who is from everlasting to everlasting. God has no beginning and no ending and the apostle, therefore, Peter says that "all flesh, every human being, is like grass.

What does this “saying” really mean?
It means there is no stability in anything that man does or produces. Man is seen as grass that soon fades and withers; but God and his word endure forever the same." The comparison of a human being with grass, or with flowers, is very beautiful, and is quite common in the Scriptures.

The comparison turns on the fact, that the grass or the flower, however green or beautiful it may be, soon loses its freshness; is withered; is cut down, and dies. Peter made reference to
Isaiah 40: 6-8.

"But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you".

This means God’s WORD is steadfast unmoved, fixed, permanent and cannot be altered. Heaven and earth will pass away, the fading glories of natural objects, and the wasting strength of man will wax and wane. God’s truth remains unaffected and unchanged. Every prophecy it contains shall be fulfilled. Every promise God made in it shall be honored by HIM. The elegance and beauty of HIS Word never fades. The power of the WORD of God never becomes feeble. The gospel system (the way of salvation) is just as relevant now  as it was when it was first revealed to man, and it still has as much power to save as it had when first applied to the first human heart.

It’s been said this way: “We see the grass wither when summer turns to fall; we see the flower of the field leave their seeds behind and then decay.  We see men, though confident in their strength, rejoicing in the rigor of their body frame, suddenly cut down in a moment, and twinkling of an eye. We seen cities decline, kingdoms overthrown and suddenly destroyed: but the Word of God is still the same now as it was at the beginning. So in the midst of every change that will occur on the face of this earth, God’s Word will remain the same".

“And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you” (vs. 25)
That is, this gospel, this good news is the "word" which Peter was referring to is written by Isaiah (Isaiah 64:6) in the passage which has been quoted.

In light of the affecting truth stated in the close of this chapter,
1 Peter 1:24-25,  Peter admonishes us to  learn and remember to make it a habit to reflect on our feebleness and frailty. It is true "We all do fade as a leaf," Isaiah 64:6. Our glory is like the flower of the field. Our beauty fades, and our strength disappears. We cannot afford to live a life as believers where our faith is not active and producing the kind of life that reflects our belief in the true and living God and the Lord Jesus Christ who sacrificed His life and shed His blood for our redemption.
